COMICS: Looks Like We'll Be Getting A New Origin For THE JOKER This "Villains Month"

This September is Villains Month, and DC's latest "What's New In The New 52" is actually some Andy Clarke artwork for a classic version of The Joker -- it seems he and Andy Kubert have an origin story in the works for Batman's arch nemesis..

The Joker is a character who's real origins have usually remained a mystery in the DC universe, with Alan Moore's take from The Killing Joke generally regarded as canon by most -- if a back-story must be assigned at all. But that may all be about to change this Sepetember, as a one-shot Joker story from Andy Kubert which takes place before the events of the #1 New 52 issues may set up a brand new origin for the character.

"During Villains Month, witness an untold tale of The Joker that takes place before any of the #1 issues in DC COMICS-THE NEW 52. Written by Andy Kubert and illustrated by Andy Clarke, this unique one-shot will not only hint at a possible origin for The Joker, but will also feature the origin of a classic Batman villain who folks might not suspect as having ties to the Clown Prince of Crime."

What do you think of this? Is a new origin welcome or is The Joker a character who works best when his roots remain -- to quote The Killing Joke -- "multiple choice"? Sound off below.

Andy Kubert is a good writer. Wish he could be drawing but still I trust him and will check it out.

ENOUGH OF THE JOKER! This joke seriously needs to have the last laugh, be creative think of some new villains. Villain's Month and all this other crap is proving how DC is so incompetent with themselves not just WB on the full Batman and Superman circle constantly spinning. If the Joker was with Marvel they would have properly put him in his place a decade ago, he's just becoming a tired and old recycled and reused token villain for DC Comics.

I kind of agree, there are plenty of stories to tell to keep Joker on the back burner for at least 3-4 years.

Look at the Phantom Stranger. They gave him an origin when his story was, more or less, "multiple choice" as well. They have done a decent job of it, mind you, but it does take something out of the character to have a history, an identity, for him.

The Joker is chilling because, as far as we know, he started out just like any of us. He went through events that messed him up and made him into the homicidal maniac that we all are familiar with. If you give him a definite origin, and I would infer a definite identity, then the mystique of the character is gone. He won't be quite the same character.

Didn't he already fall to his death in that horribly underwhelming "Death of the Family" nonsense?

Please do not give him a "definitive" origin. I think they had it perfect when Moore did it.

It is bad enough they did that "painted in a corner" deal with the Joker cutting off his face and wearing it like a Leatherface mask, now they want to take the mystery away from him too? New 52 has been a failure, time to come up with a new gimmick to reset continuity and get rid of those stupid v-neck collars on all the heroes costumes.

Cacophony and widening gyre proved that new villains are possible and can be enjoyable. This is not a necessary reboot DC!

I think a cool Joker Origin story would be one where you think you're getting a pre-psychotic person who tells his 'loved ones' about his childhood and maybe that gives images of flashbacks, but in the end (M Night Shamalon style) you realize that he was lying the whole time just to lure someone to their death. Sure he wasn't "The Joker" maybe he hasn't gotten his skin bleached or hair greened, but he's still the joker through and through and ultimately, you still don't know what crack in earth he crawled out of.

Just leave him alone. He's better off with his past a mystery.

I love the Joker. No need to "put him on the back burner for 3-4 years".

There is approximately 40-50 Batman related books going on right now. He can have small role, cameo, or even an arc every once in awhile in just ONE of them.

That's a FALSE HEADLINE. If you read te solicitation, it says it's just going to add a little new angle to the joker's "multiple choice" background basically, while exploring the origins of ANOTHER character who is linked with the joker. Are you people really just reading the headlines and not AT LEAST giving the rest of the article a read? It's always bitch-bitch-bitch

Batman has supposedly figured out who he was. eventually that's going to come into play so I don't even know why they're even going to bother with this bullshit.

The Joker doesn't need an origin story! Don't give him one!!!

Is everyone just ignoring the part where it says "possible" origin story because that means you wouldn't have a reason to complain?
TerminalVoyd

I have no problem with them "hinting" at a possible origin and adding to the multiple choice alongside other potential New 52 versions of the existing ideas.

So long as they don't attempt to do a Batman Confidential type "Lovers and Madmen " style definitive origin that's so reviled DC basically have to sweep it under the rug and pretend it never happened. We don't need another one of those.

The character/villain tie to Joker? Either a mob boss, Black Mask, Two-Face or maybe a character like Clayface

Joker's origins have never been in doubt--Red Hood+Batman+Chemical Bath= Joker. It's the guy he was before that's always been shady.
