Originally, I was only going to be picking up the Justice League series spinning out of the New 52. Then I heard some really good things about Detective Comics. Batman has always been my favorite DC hero, up until that point, I haven't read a hardcore Batman story in awhile. I picked it up, and it was the best comic I've read in a long time, I gave it a PERFECT score. Now, issue two has arrived. Does it continue to be that dark detective story established from the first issue? Read on.

There's a certain cliche in a lot of media, namely TV shows and a lot of the times, comics. Basically, the first issue or episode of anything will start out with a bang, makes sure it captivates the reader. The second episode or issue will slow down the pace and be more dialogue-centric. It is usually never as good as the first, same applies here. But, it still is a great issue.

The issue continues the plot from the last, Batman is on a mission to rescue Olivia, little does he know that things are not what they seem......

In this issue, we get some Bruce Wayne scenes. His character is established as more of Tony Stark-esque. (Not TOO much, thank goodness.) This short romance with a reporter (hmm, remind you of something from a certain 2008 film?) wasn't needed and felt forced. We really don't need it to make the story entertaining. Once he suits up, it gets back on track.

So far, this is a perfect Batman story. There are no sidekicks, there are no references to the other heroes of DC, this is a definitive Batman story. As I've said in my review for issue one, it feels like an episode of the Animated Series, this would make a great direct-to-DVD adaption. (In ten years, they probably will use it.) The thought boxes for Batman is really, really important and what's been keeping this series in its atmosphere. Batman is a deadly serious, no-nonsense, get the job done guy, I've always wondered what he's thinking through all that. These dialogue boxes really separate him from the rest of the DCU, it gives him the human-edge.

Doll Maker so far has been alright, but I don't see the threat others in the past have provided. I don't see the difference between this guy, and say, Professor Pyg. I'm sure I'll change my mind in the coming issues. The most interesting plot of this series so far is with Joker, but that isn't touched upon at all really in this issue. I am looking forward to seeing where it goes. Commissioner Gordon has a very interesting edge to him in this series, becoming a bit more than just the guy Batman goes to for info.

The art as I've said in my past review, is top-notch. It fits the dark and gritty atmosphere well. Maybe I didn't notice it before, but the ear part in Batman's costume is way too short. Not a big deal of course, just something.

Overall, this issue is non-comparable to the first, but it's still a great read. If you're looking for a definitive Batman story, no sidekicks, no guys that can fly faster than a speeding bullet, just a guy attempting to bring order to a city with no heart, check this series out. The ending had me surprised, I don't know how it will get resolved.

8/10.

@Arminies This is mainly a news site, so reviews don't hit the front too often.

I saw mixed reactions to the first issue. Some loved it and others hated it. I loved it but i have to disagree with you. I thought this second issue was far better. It had everything you would want in a comic where as the first issue had some akward moments and dialog(Tony Daniel's specialty).

Second issue was stronger in my opinion but I do agree Detective Comics has been a surprise. Really really good compared to Tony Daniel's Batman run.

I enjoyed this issue. Interested in that ending tho. What irks me tho is I am totally lost. Is Bruce with Catwoman or the woman in this issue? Things are quite confusing.

@demonhunter15 I am an admin (editor), but the way it works is that if a review is well-written enough and has relevance to current times, (or if it's plain interesting) it's worthy of being on the front.

I'm yet to read it but these second issues (so far) all seem very very short page-count wise.

New 52 had a really strong week, while detective was nowhere near my favorite, and I think it pales in comparison to it's sister book "batman" (because snyder is a far superior writer) 'TEC was fun this week (though daniel is a much better artist than writer)

Overall Batwing, Animal man, Swamp-thing, Huntress mini #1, Penguin: Pride and Prejudice #1, Action Comics, and OMAC are at least 7/10, and I review pretty harshly.

Orders of the #2's are even higher than the initial orders of the number ones, people that are acting like the new 52 is going away are kidding themselves, they've pupt themselves in position to wrestle leadership away from marvel unless marvel does something drastic (or just stops the constant mediocre events and tying every single weekly into them, forcing you to buy like 10 books a week just to get the whole story of the event.)

Oh look the Editors suck comments again, I will once again say this: We have been trusted by the all mighty Galactus to find/put news on the main page that we feel deserves it. Demonhunter15 in the two sentences that you wrote in the Man of Steel set photos article there a total of 9 Spelling mistakes, with you even spelling Man Mand. I consulted Big G on what I should do with the article because I was going to just edit it but that means I would have had to rewrite the whole article and not should not be the case. Destroyer has proven him self as a good writer so he has been trusted to put his work on the main page. Again, keep at it contributors make sure that you proof read your articles make sure there is not a lot of mistakes and once again if any of you need help with how to structure or use code in your articles I urge you to go to my fan site use the contact me button and shoot me an e-mail and I have no problems giving you advise or trying to help you out.

man this issue was great,i said it before and i will say it again detective comics #1 was the best batman title for me out of all four, and even though critics are raving about batman #1 for me it was not as good or stunning as detective comics #1 and issue #2 more than lives up to its amazing predecessor which is not an easy thing to do.like the above review says this is a true batman comic with no silly sidekicks, its bruce wayne and batman.

but the villain is also looking disgusting and sinister and he seems to have one twisted sick family as well.loved the drawing which showed the entire bunch, that was cool, art is amazing again the best out of the lot.I will say ever since i read batman hush this is the only series that has come close to it as a cool, dark, action packed bruce wayne/batman story & another stunning ending, tony daneil is so far the best and I hope he keeps it up :)

LOVE IT 9/10

@waylon

I hate it when people correct others but are just as wrong themselves.
Proofread your own writings a bit better if you feel the need to point out others mistakes.

Look, you all get what I am saying here. That some of you have taken it as me being an ass and feel as if you should take what I said and make an example out of it I am fine with, and I am sorry that you feel that way. The point is I am trying to be nice here and let you guys know we are not out to get you. I love being able to main someones articles when they fine something great, but sometimes they are just not salvageable.
