Static Shock by jacobcitybros

#7 Virgil Hawkins/Static (Shock)

Static is a fictional character, a comic book superhero published by DC Comics and a member of the Teen Titans. An original character from Milestone Comics, which was distributed and promoted by DC Comics but not originally owned or developed by them. Static first appears in Static #1 (June 1993) and was created by Dwayne McDuffie and John Paul Leon.

dmb1511: I always loved Static Shock, heck I even thought his partner, Gear (from the show) was pretty awesome. He is one of those heroes who beg the question of whom the creator was (Rest in Peace Dwayne McDuffie- Milestone Comics). Even though his villains in the comics were in need of tweaking, I forgot about them because I was so drawn to the character. Virgil Ovid Hawkins A.K.A Static Shock continues our countdown at number seven on the list.

bigshow2312: “Superhero Static Shock! Woo Woo!”. In retrospect, this character had one of the best TV shows ever. Coming up, this program actually introduced me to the character and got me to actually reading about him. To bad DC decided to cancel his NEW 52 run. To me, Static was like Black Lightning’s little brother but become more successful than he was (Charlie & Eddie Murphy). What’s noteworthy about Static is that he represents the urban/hip-hop youth of Black America. Like many teenagers, Virgil deals with the fluctuation of his hormones, peer pressure and being a total geek at heart. He’s also incredibly intelligent, for he worked for S.T.A.R labs and created valuable gadgets. Clever yet humorous, I think it’s safe to say he is the true Black version of Marvel’s Spider-Man.

I love Static Shock so much. Seeing that character always brings a smile to my face as a young black man myself.

R.I.P Dwayne McDuffie. Thanks for sharing your brilliance with us.

DC should have given Static a second shot.He was
sabotaged by poor writing on Scott McDaniel's part
and a editor that let him do it.

On my personal list I believe Static should be
higher and should definitely get a movie if WB ever
gets there heads clear and start actually making
more super-hero movies.

enjoying your list so far waiting to see if Mr.Terrific
places anywhere on your top ten.

not to be racist... but do we still even need a black history month? kinda seems redundant since all history is intertwined and PC media has watchgroups all over it constantly to make sure we hear the african-american history as much as the real history (not events and facts segregated and skewed by the color of those involved). but i guess as long as people are learning history its not too bad.

why not have asian history month?
economic history month? british history month? the effects of the industrial revolution history month?

again, not to be racist... i just keep expecting people to evolve past this self-righteous 'pat yourself on the back cuz your special' month, but they never do

I dont know about these other history months you've listed, but I feel it is necessary for a Black History Month due to the ignorance of the Youth (mainly my youth group). Look at these for example and tell me if this is what my ancestors died and fought for:

See where I'm coming from? WE celebrate it to remind OUR kids what life is really about and how they take it for granted. WE celebrate. You dont have to take part bro, just respect our culture:

Right on, man.. nothing against your culture or anything

no need to get defensive, Im sure it does plenty of good, but the dumbing down of the youth isn't just a black problem, its an American problem...

Again, I meant no offense. I've just always seen it as something that spotlights our diverse cultural beginnings and prejudices, rather than our similarities and accomplishments (which hopefully isnt still the case as it seemed to be when i was a kid)... which if we are ever to evolve as a country or species or whatever we should make more of a stride to move away from

@WittySupername

Agreed. Its not about “acting black” that’s important, but rather fighting that mentality that “being black” consist of the frequent use of slang, baggy clothes etc. I’ve had many folks tell me that I’m not black, just from the way I talk, dress & the music I listen to. Stupid.

@BlindLemonShemp

No I wasn’t offended at all, I just wanted to tell you the importance of culture respect. Yeah, it isn’t just a Black problem, it is all the above.
Nothing has much changed since you were a kid, they don’t teach much Black History in schools. The only ppl they cover is MLK & Rosa Parks.
