Grant Morrison Responds To "GD Gate"

If you read our earlier article on a comic store owner boycotting Action Comics #1 because he felt it offended his religious beliefs you will want to check out this update..

Bleeding Cool have posted an update to earlier story detailing a North Carolina comic store owner's boycotting of Grant Morrison's Action Comics #1 because of the below panel caused quite a stir here on CBM, with very strong opinions from all sides.

Now said owner of Comics Conspiracy has issued an apology.

First and foremost, I want to make a formal apology to Grant Morrison. I made a statement in anger after reading the issue in question after the store closed on Wednesday. Mr. Morrison, I most humbly apologize for calling you a “Scottish schmuck”, I was way out of line. This is a true heartfelt apology.

For right now though, I have to admit that the can of worms that has been opened is much larger than I ever dreamed it would be. But that’s OK. There are a lot of interesting views here mixed in among the hate. The bottom line is that nobody but Grant Morrison knows the TRUE intent behind the GD letters. This issue could be easily resolved by a simple post from either Mr. Morrison or the editors at DC Comics.

As the debate continued on the previous article, we were all trying to best decipher exactly what "GD" even meant. Clearly this guy figured it was an abbreviation of "God Damn". But there were those that thought it might just have been the sound Supes made as he felt the force of the explosion. And guess what! Grant Morrison responds..

“It should go without saying that the offending panel and caption, a mere ‘GD’, is a sound effect grunt – to suggest Superman’s breath being forced through gritted teeth – much like ‘DHH’, ‘GNUHH’ or the many others used throughout this book and in general in the comics business. It’s not in any way representative of God or a curse.”

So there you have it. Gotta take your hat of to the guy for apologizing whatever your opinions of his initial over reaction are. Although he may want to keep his boycott book open as in next month's issue Supes says "[frick] Jesus" when Lois steps on his toe.

And I had a feeling that GD wasn't used the way that the owner of Comics Conspiracy thought it was, I'd think they would've used the full phrase instead of just 'GD'.

I wonder if anyone else would have picked up on this without the dude's comments. I would've just figured it was what Morrison said it is: a grunt.

So what? People say it so much in comic books it shouldnt be that big a deal, I get that it is offensive but so is the word Fags being put into Dark Knight Returns and that comic was totally awesome

Ignorant fool!!

"God damn" or "Goddamn" does not use the Christian god's name in vain at all. To do that he would have to say "Jahova Damn" or "Yahweh Damn". "God" is a descriptive word/title, like the Norse Gods, Roman Gods, Greek Gods, Muslim God, etc.

Didn't superman denounce his American citizen status and became a world citizen instead? Also "god damn" is the right expression after being within a blast of a tank. I know morrison said it was the sound he was making, but cammon, really? He should have said "f me" instead, I mean get with the times. Kids especially teens curse more than ever these days, it isn't 1950's uniform and mannered youth nemore. I think clark's reiteration should be more modern, in the sense that dialogue should reflect youth today, and not by superman standards.

The reason he singled out Superman is because the Man of Steel stands for the ideals of purity and simplicity. He's the biggest and best of them all; the one hero every other hero looks up to. And to Superman, there is right and wrong, and he acts upon it. Sure, it's not necessarily true that our God is his god (and, yes, the change in capitalization was purposeful), but he respects the followers of the Christian God, and he doesn't intend to do them any wrongs through disrespect. It's an off-limits on his ever-steady moral compass.

That's why he singled out Supes.

Even Jehovah and Yahwey aren't God's name. Yahwey just means "I am" referring to the passage when Moses (the only living person who's seen him) asks him his name. He doesn't have a name but people wanted to give him one anyway. Jehovah is another version of "I am" in a different language.

The closest you're going to get to God's name in the ass-backwards west is Jesus, but that wasn't really his name either. It was probably something more like Yeshua...

So you see, really, who gives a crap.

Said all the time. Christians and Jews take it on the chin.
However , 'Allah damn' would probably illicit quite a different response.
Or maybe 'Buddha damn'..naaahh ,they don't GAS.
