I always felt that if Pa Kent had to die a heart attack was the best way to go. Superman can stop a bullet, a robber, a super villain, or even the dumb tornado that killed him here. A heart attack though is really something Superman can't stop even with all his godlike powers. To watch his father die in front of him and no matter what he does he can't save him is a much greater lesson, in that he can't save everyone, then the tornado scene was trying to show us.
