COMICS: Controversial Continuity Changes Arise In Tanarus' Debut In The Mighty Thor #8!

So, Thor was never a founding Avengers, but Tanarus was? Oh dear. Hit the jump to check out a preview of the debut of the new God of Thunder which includes enough apparent continuity changes to really ruin your breakfast...

Fear Itself #7 saw the death of Thor, and Fear Itself #7.2 saw the introduction of his replacement, Tanarus. The weird thing was that as soon as he appeared, everyone forgot about Thor and it was this "new" God of Thunder who suddenly had years of history in the Marvel Universe. While this is undoubtedly a temporary change (well, here's hoping anyway) a preview of The Mighty Thor #8 reveals that writer Matt Fraction has some very mysterious plans for the title.

Who is Tanarus, and why is he the new God of Thunder?

Many thanks to Comic Book Resources for the following preview.

It´s interesting. Developments like this only will make Thor´s hammering his face the most interesting.

I see no problem in that.

obviously some mind warp thing and as it appears Thor is alive where ever he has ended up im guessing before The Avengers film comes out things will be back to normal... with a little help from loki it appears

It's clearly a memory issue, guys. Tanarus is remembering Thor's life because the Asgardians have "forgotten Thor's existence." So the Asgardians remember history differently. That's all.

I reckon Tanarus will be some kind of false hero, maybe he's in alliegence with someone who has the power to alter memories on a large scale. It seems people are remembering Thor's exploits with Tanarus replacing the true God of Thunder.
"No one remembers Thor" suggests the memory of Thor has been overridden by false memories of Tanarus. There's an image of Tanarus with the Avengers, with Iron Man wearing his old costume, and also the caption "Tanarus, who stood against the Serpent!" even though he didn't appear in that storyline.

Perhaps, come 2012 and the lead up to Avengers, Loki, being the only one to remember Thor, brings about his brother's return, and we see them both team up and defeat Tanarus.

For decades Stan and Jack were able to come up with classic stories of THOR. Simonson did a novel thing and introduced Beta Ray Bill a variant of that character. Since then there has been a revolving door of characters that are shades of Thor but few in that time seem to be able to write stories for the original Thor. This third edition of Thor's run started of epic with Thor's return but now we go back to the Thunderstrike , Thor Girl, retreading of the Beta Ray Bill story. Booo!

i dont think this is controversal, it seems like the begining of a great story, i hope it ends up with scarlet witch changing everything again, but i cant see that happening... its probably something to do with the eldergods and thors mother

Yup, Marvel's failing in terms of comics right now.

I don't think it is not that shocking or controversial. its not like he made a deal with the devil or used some cosmic power to alter reality. Someone or something causes Tanarus to replace Thor's life story. I heard Donald Blake will be making a return so there is an obvious hint that Thor will come back. This is like Roxas from KH2

Wow, Pascual Ferry has gotten a lot better since I last saw his art a decade or so ago.

Oh, and it's Pasqual Ferry? That makes MetropolisMarvel there is right; I remember how I was unimpressed by his art years ago (it was Superman he was working on, I believe), but this looks pretty much fine! :)

Ok now im interested, I hope when Thor gets back this Tanarus guy becomes a great rival of his. I mean Thor does need a good new villain or rival since he has buddy-ed up with Beta Ray Bill.

JackBauer: Excellent observation. While saving the falling construction worker is a time-honored thing that flying heroes do, it sure isn't something you'd find in America today. Just shows how ignorant many comic writers are of OSHA. There are probably a few more violations going on there.

As for this Tanarus thing, personally, I'm cool with it as long as it winds up being just a story. I do NOT want to see this as a permanent "still here in twenty years" kind of thing.

Not too crazy about the art, but I've certainly seen worse.

I don't think were SUPPOSED to like him.....I think we're supposed to be rooting for Loki who's obviously gonna do something to bring Thor back.

ThaMessenger07 - 11/18/2011, 7:01 AM
What ^^^^ He said! They want us to root for Loki and Loki will have a hand in bringing back Thor. Thor could use a nice powerhouse fight.

Marvel doesn't have enough powerhouses on Thor's level, there either bricks, Cosmics, or just not enough for him.

Mastyrwerk - 11/18/2011, 7:21 AM
Didn't they do this with Sentry?
Nothing new under the sun.
More than likely a ploy of Loki.
Or Enchantress.
I say Thor returns to comics just in time for Avengers to hit screens.

God Marvel stop with all this bullshit continuity crap! Haven't you learned anything from Spiderman and Scarlet Spider? Apparently not.

This is why I read DC now. I like Marvel better. I like their characters, setting and universe better but I hate what they're doing with their comics now. Dc had done its fair share of BS (like the 'death' of Batman) just not on the level Marvel keeps doing these things. STOP I WANT MY MARVEL BACK!
