I was excited as hell by the article, as the Man-Thing was my favorite comic when I was a kid, and a new Steve Gerber story would be awesome. I was already to go out and buy my first regular comic books in ages. But then I saw the interior art and that killed any desire I had. The artwork on the first cover looks great, but the depiction of Manny inside is just terrible, IMO.

Man-Thing is NOT a Swamp Thing ripoff. The first appearance of Man-Thing was in Savage Tales #1 (May 1971). Swamp Thing's first comic wasn't till 1972. They both, however, ripped off the Heap, from the 40s.

Eh, while mctrinket is still wrong, only two months separate the two with Man-Thing having shown up first (May 1971). Swamp Thing's initial incarnation was Alex Olsen (July 1971), re-written and updated to Alec Holland (November 1972).

Whoever is helming Marvel's portfolio review department should be shot and burn! How the hell such crap art work getting through the screening process let alone approved to actually work on a title?! I estimate 70% of the art from Marvel's monthly output is that bad and worst!

@Kishin - Ya beat me to it! Good post! The Heap is the original muck monster. The best Man Thing story (in my opinion) was 'A Candle For St Cloud'. But Alan Moore's version of Swamp Thing is so far unsurpassed.

I had heard of this unpublished Man-Thing story before but, the last I heard, Kevin Nowlin had not completed all of the artwork and wasn't planning on doing so. So is the art on all three issues being done by Nowlin, because, if it is, I'm all in.

HONESTLY, THEY NEED TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT WITH FRIGG'N MAN THING. ALL HE IS IS A HUGE LUMBERING BEHEMOTH OF MUCK THAT JUST WANDERS...WANDERS, THERE IS NOTHING NEW WITH THIS GUY. NOW SAY ALL HIS HUMAN INTELLECT CAME BACK IN THIS GROTESQUELY MONSTROUS HULK OF A BEAST, THAT WOUD BE WAY MORE COOLER. HE'S A SCIENTIST, CAN'T BE HUMAN ANYMORE, LONLEY WANDERS THE MUCK FIGHTS THE BAD GUYS, IF YOU GAVE HIM AN INTELLECT IT WOULD BE WAY MORE COOLER. THE BEST HERO STORIES ARE THE ONES THAT THE HERO SUFFERS IN, THE TRUE HERO IS THE ONE THAT GETS THROUGH IT.

Yeah, Alan Moore's Swamp Thing was insane. He turned him into one of DC's most powerful super heroes, LOL.

Fact. Way, way back I was so p***ed off with the standard of art in Swamp Thing, my favourite title, I sent them a copy of the above art as a sampler, having already had offers of work from Marvel UK and Dark Horse. They didn't reply, but a couple of issues later they had a (one issue) character in the comic who was about to get tortured and killed. He had my name. I'd love to think that I'd hit a nerve. But as darkmetal says - the current art is still rushed and poor.

ANYthing by the late genius Steve Gerber is a must have in any serious comic collection in my opinion. I remember reading on here months ago how much of an influence he was on Joss Whedon, and it showed throughout The Avengers. I can't wait to read these.
