COMICS: First Look At NOVA #1; The Fate Of Richard Rider Finally Revealed?

The Human Rocket returns! You’ve followed him through the history making (and changing!) AvX and now the mystery of the all-new Nova are revealed in this breathtaking new ongoing by the best-selling, award winning team of Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness (RED HULK, Avengers X-Sanction). Sam Alexander is a kid bound by the gravity of a small town and a father whose ridiculous, drunken fairy tales about a “Nova Corps” were just another heavy burden in a life full of them. But luckily for Sam Alexander…soon gravity won’t even matter. And those troubles? It’s like they’re a billion miles away.

Wait, so Rider is Sam Alexander's father? I'm hopeful about this series, I seriously think we'll get a very inspired Jeph Loeb out of this series. Sam was the name of his kid that passed way years ago, so hopefully he'll make history with this new take on Nova.

And how the hell Richard ended up in the past and became Sam's father?

When Rider first appeared, he was actually a few years younger than Peter Parker as Pete was in College when Rider was in High School. Things are really wonky now.

Would be cool if Peter's return coincided with THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

wanna see the REAL rip off?it is deadpool, the rip off version of deathstroke.
WYLEEJAY
WYLEEJAY - 2/14/2013, 10:08 PM
What does deathstroke and deadpool have in common? Swords and guns. Is that about it?
KingLing
KingLing - 2/14/2013, 10:17 PM
Deadpool was made directly to be a parody of Deathstroke. Wade Wilson versus Slade Wilson, both assassins with lightly changed color schemes and whatnot. It's intentional, and hilarious.
WYLEEJAY
WYLEEJAY - 2/14/2013, 10:24 PM
Ah. That is funny. How bout when DC came out with Aquaman after Marvel had Namor the Sub Mariner. These companys do this.

I honestly didnt think of their real names. I was thinking healing factor, teleportation belt, completely insane and talking to the reader. Deadpool vs deathstroke crossover!

Im pretty sure the sentry was created to mock superman. The man with the power of a thousand exploding suns, superman gets his power from the sun. The s emblem on them both. Marvel did the whole power corrupts and the sentry went insane and was his own worst enemy. Supermans the boy scout. Their both pretty much the most powerful superheroes there is. Except supermans perfect and the sentrys horribly flawed.

richard rider was a lame and generic knock off character. i'm personally glad to see he never made it back.

Even if Green Lantern is the more popular franchise to geekdom, Richard Rider > Hal Jordan

See if they could bring Nova in GOTG movie and then Nova will become more popular to the mainstream because GL the movie and multi color emotion premise is shit.

BTW, I don't think that's Rider but Sams' father who is another Nova corpsman.

shamo
shamo - 2/15/2013, 3:47 AM
while GL's emotional spectrum premise is shit. it doesn't change the fact that Nova is a generic knockoff. he'll never make it to the big screen because the audience will just say: this is just Green Lantern with a helmet on.
iJackSparrow
iJackSparrow - 2/15/2013, 4:04 AM
@Shamo

I think you overstimate the general audience feelings towards Green Lantern. If Marvel gets the right team and does Nova justice, they could have yet another home run at their stable. Don't get me wrong, I love Green Lantern the character, but the general audience just doesn't care enough about the character to give a [frick] about GL and the corps.

I've never been interested in Nova, but this is really awesome
shamo
shamo - 2/15/2013, 4:27 AM
sure, if a great director tackles it then it could be a hit but the same could be said of nearly any character, regardless of quality. Put a Nolan caliber filmmaker on any Marvel movie and it'll turn out well.

problem is, why would Marvel waste hundreds of millions of dollars on a movie that we've already seen? and recently at that? why would they waste money on a knockoff when they could spend it on their characters that are actually original? or atleast less unoriginal Nova?

I'm with "shamo". Although I would love to see Nova in the Guardians of The Galaxy film, I really hope MARVEL brings it and impresses the hell out of all of us cause I'm afraid too many people are gonna associate him with Green Lantern.
SpideyQuad
SpideyQuad - 2/15/2013, 6:25 AM
Nova and Green Lantern do have some underlining similarities, but not in their power set.

It's not easy to make an original comic book character. Think about it. Try to come up with an original power or ability that hasn't been thought up already.

Can anyone accurately count how many Superman clones there are just in the two companies alone?

I think what really counts is what the writers do with the characters, not who was first.
JohnTom88
JohnTom88 - 2/15/2013, 6:30 AM
Audiences say it's Green Lantern with a helmet on? Heh, most audiences don't watch Green Lantern.

Nova has a big help from the Marvel brand. Because that's what will sell Marvel movies from Avengers on.
shamo
shamo - 2/15/2013, 6:58 AM
Nova would be marketed towards the same audience as Green Lantern was. and GL made over 200 million dollars so people will definitely see the resemblence.

not to mention Green Lantern has an award nominated tv show which is broadcasted around the world and receives close to 2million views per episode. he's also been featured in various games and cartoon series over the past decade. and unlike Nova, who's a D-lister and can't even hold his own comic, GL has spawned muliple spin-offs and is the 3rd most popular character at DC.

So if Marvel wants Nova to work they need to change his origin story, remove the bootleg GL Corpse and create a new Nova who was actually inteded to be original as opposed to a ripoff Green Lantern/Spiderman.

but now that i think about it; they've already done that. the Nova Corpse is gone, a new Novas been created which also means he'll have a different origin. so i take it back, a Nova movie can work. as long as its Sam and not Rider.
