After thirty years of bondage to the demon Zarathos (ignoring that whole 1990's thing), Johnny Blaze will be retiring. The heir of Ghost Rider will be...a girl???
Rob Williams, who is currently writing Ghost Rider's relaunch title, finally confirmed the rumors. In a desperate attempt to free himself from his curse, Johnny Blaze will be liberated, at the expense of an unwitting Earth girl.
"{It's} a girl, which brings a new aesthetic to the series ... I would never claim that it's the most original idea in the world, but it does bring something new to Ghost Rider," Williams said in an interview.
The past two decades of Ghost Rider comics have really fallen from their 1980's heights, and I'd be willing to accept any gimmick to bring change (and hopefully good change) to one of my favorite characters. Honestly, this route could get mired in cliches. The worst turn for the comic, which I'd say has a 50/50 shot of being true, would be for Johnny Blaze to be a mentor to this new Ghost Rider. Blaze would be the old, wise veteran of the supernatural world, and this new female Rider would be the clumsy, arrogant apprentice. We've seen this a million times, in a million different comics, in a million different ways...Mr. Williams, if you're listening, please take us some where original!!!
I guess we'll have to wait and see.
Expect Ghost Rider #.1 in June, with the official series hot off the press in July.
