COMICS: Otto's Going Nowhere! AVENGING To Become SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN TEAM-UP

Those of you hoping that Otto Octavius' reign as the "Superior" Spider-Man would be nearing its end this summer may be upset to learn that the villain is seemingly going nowhere as Marvel has today announced that Avenging Spider-Man is set to become Superior Spider-Man Team-Up.

When Peter Parker was shown to still be somewhere in his Doctor Octopus possessed mind (trust me, that sentence makes perfect sense if you've been reading the series) on the final page of Superior Spider-Man #1, many fans assumed that it was only a matter of months before he would return. Marvel's June solicitations also seemed to indicate that Otto Octavius' tenure as the "Superior" Spidey wouldn't last too much longer, but it now seems fair to say that he won't be going ANYWHERE. Talking to Comic Book Resources, writer Christopher Yost has revealed that Avenging Spider-Man will be renamed Superior Spider-Man Team-Up this July.

"Well, in my heart when I say "Team-Up" for "Superior Spider-Man," I probably mean "Versus." In the latest "Avenging" issues, we've seen that he has a fairly contentious relationship with most of the heroes he's encountered. And with "Superior Spider-Man Team Up," that just gets bigger. I think in issue #1, he teams up with pretty much the entire Marvel Universe.

So you're going to continue to see how Spidey ---who up until now has been an incredibly arrogant a-hole --continues to deal with the rest off the Marvel after what has happened to his reputation in the first few issues of Superior.

Spidey-Ock's been acting, in his own special way, heroically. To me, the joy of writing Avenging has been seeing how the other people react to him and also how Doc views these people. He's always looking down his nose at the others -- even guys like Thor and Hulk -- because in the end he really, truly believes in his heart that he is better than all of them.

With the relaunch, as you'll be seeing in the months to come starting in Superior #9, Spidey’s gone through some changes, and will expand his operations. He's going to be the best Spider-Man that's ever been, and he's going to take it to the next level. "Superior Spider-Man Team Up" reflects that. You're going to get bigger stories. Like I said, in the first issue he teams up with the Marvel Universe, and you'll see him interacting in a much bigger way with everybody.

There's an ongoing thread throughout the book that will continue from "Avenging" into "Superior Spider-Man Team-Up." All the seeds we've been laying will start exploding...because they're those kinds of seeds. I'm a big fan of the big story. I love done-in-ones, and I've written a number for this book already, but you're going to see the big story as well. If you think it doesn't matter, you're wrong. We've got big stuff coming up, and we'll see if reflected in "Superior Spider-Man" as well. You'll see some of the fallout from my title go into "Superior" in the months ahead."

They really seem to be forcing this one on us...I really dislike the whole thing that they all seem to think Superior Spider-Man is better than Peter ever was...at first I thought it was ironic, as if it was from Ock's perspective, but seeing as all the head guys keep saying it, they seem to think it as well...way to take a dump on Peter Parker, the reason we liked Spider-Man in the first place...

In Avenging Chris Yost is preparing two different storylines involving the Jackal and the Ends-Of-The-Earth Sinister Six team. I love how Yost writes Spider-Ock I can tell there's going to be something major going down. Avenging (and later Superior Team-Up) is a title worth paying attention to.
