In the climatic final few pages of Avengers Vs. X-Men #11, Cyclops kills Charles Xavier and goes "Dark Phoenix" as the cosmic force finally sends him over the edge. "I got a little teary-eyed when we were scoping out the moment in the room with the series’ writers and editors," Marvel Editor in Chief Axel Alonso tells The New York Daily News. "He needed to be the casualty in this story. There’s no more oh-sh-- moment that you can bring than having a son killing his father." The writer of this instalment in the series (which has so far received a mixed response from fans and critics alike) had this to say about the decision. "He was this thing that was just floating around the X-books, with not the same amount of gravitas that he once had. I did point out that he would matter more in death. The moment is shocking, and certainly will be talked about by message boards forever and ever, but it’s really about what you get afterwards. What Cyclops has to do now, is dig himself out of the biggest, deepest hole in the history of comic books." How do you guys feel about this?

So, after years of establishing Cyclops as the leader of the mutant race, THIS is what they do to his character? From issue #1, the X-Men have been portrayed as the villains of this series (you can blame the success of The Avengers for that I guess) and the whole "Dark Phoenix" angle is just predictable and lame. And Hope shouting, "Nooooo!" feels very forced - her and Xavier didn't really have any sort of notable relationship. Guess we can look forward to Marvel NOW! being ALL Avengers and Wolverine. I get closer to just dropping Marvel's books altogether each and every week.

Not sure how I feel about this. Cyclops killing Xavier. Hmmmm. This sure as hell doesn't restore my faith in the X-Men that Marvel obliterated during Schism. I'm intrigued by "New X-Men", but not excited enough to be rushing to my comic book store the day its released.

I don't think it's lame. Cyclops made very difficult decision but the phoenix corrupted him, like it did with Jean. I don't think he will survive AvX and he will reunite with Jean in a way. Yes, Ironfan93. Xavier dies again but the problem in comics is not characters dienig but how this fit in the story. I've read comics since forever, at least is 25years and something and I have to say that finally, for Marvel, THIS is the moment to read these comics. I think that Bendis will be remembered like the Claremont for the Avengers and what he achieved, beside popularity, is that this people now feel more alive than ever. Certenly they use promotion for this events but for 20 years the stories were lame now it's more a work in progress and an the whole Marvel universe is an evolving tapestry. I feel like I was 16 every time a issue of AvX come out. Now The Marvel Universe seems like a shared universe not only a brand.

now a days, everything is so original. nobody seems to be cpoying from earlier ideas and just putting a modern spin on it..... oh wait, yes they are! can somebody, be it hollywood, comics, TV, or what have you, just come up with an original idea? i'm not saying that I would be able to, but I dont get paid millions of dollars to do that

I think this forum post sums up the event PERFECTLY...

1. What good would taking the Hope off world do? The Phoenix can traverse the Universe like nothing, and its not just coming to Earth for Hope. It'd pick up Hope and go straight back to Earth. Only now, Hope is alone on a deserted planet with no one she knows and no one who loves her with the most powerful force in the Universe in her head. Great idea Steve.

2. The Phoenix has come to Earth a shitload of times and claimed a ton of hosts with no problems. Yet now the Avengers need to get involved?

3. Tony Stark should be kicked out from the list of top 10 smartest people. Reed needs to do an intricate ceremony where he takes away Tony's smart guy badge and kicks him down a muddy hill. Seriously Tony? The Phoenix Force is an OMNIVERSAL FORCE OF NATURE. It is ESSENTIAL for the existence of the Universe. And you thought it was a good idea to try and destroy it? With a big canon? I can't even wrap my head around this.

4. So the Iron Dumbass and the Goonsquad divide the Phoenix in five and it chooses five imperfect hosts, who actually manage to remain in full control and use their powers to improve the world. So whats the next step? Obviously we need to keep attacking them until they lose control, cause its totally going to happen eventually right? I mean its not like anyone actually controlled the Phoenix? Right?

5. And now its suddenly a great idea to make Hope the Phoenix and the Avengers are suddenly the saints that want to give Hope back her rightful powers. Not to mention the fact that the only reason the Phoenix is HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE is because of the Avengers piss poor management of the Wanda situation.

Are you [frick]ing kidding me? That is the most blatantly horrible writing I have EVER read in a comic. We're supposed to be cheering for these guys? These are the heroes of the story? If Secret Invasion was enough to get Tony fired from his job as top cop and get him declared as an international criminal, AvX should be enough to get Cap and Tony executed for extreme foolishness.

But no, the Avengers are Marvel's golden babies because of the movie and now the X-Men need to go sit into the cellar and let the Avengers sodomize them like a good little franchise. This makes the characterizations in Civil War look spot on. This makes the heroes during WWH look like absolute saints. This makes Ultimatum look like a descent event.

I could go on for days but I'm just going to stop before I have a massive heart attack from outrage.

So this marks the 7,000,234,809,234 time that Xavier has died... Let me guess, Magneto will feel bad and join the X-Men 'till they revive Xavier, right?

[frick] you Marvel.

@kalel219 Agreed.

@antman73 Also agreed.

Would've rather they killed Emma...

Most of these comments just sound like jaded x-men fanboy ranting. I could analyze the series through avengers fanboy glasses and come to an equally ridiculous, rant-like conclusion, but why bother. The status quo will be reset eventually anyway like it always is. It is comics, after all.

Magneto has been with the x-men for a while now. If anything, these events will cause him to go rogue again.

Prof X dies AGAIN?! Jeez, who's the REAL "Phoenix" here?! LAMETASTIC!! If they had any danglies, they would have killed off Cyclops, even though EVERYONE would know that wouldn't stick either. Either way, at least it will be OVER and we can deal with the Marvel NOW stuff...

I'm sure Xavier isnt dead for some odd reason he always comes back. I actually would've enjoyed watching him be a teacher at The Jean Grey School.But yeah, how many times have we seen Xavier die? Enough not to care! He hasn't been the Prof X we loved for a long time.His death will matter to the characters more than us!
