COMICS: Unlettered Preview Of Rick Remender And John Romita Jr.'s CAPTAIN AMERICA #2

Check out 3 unlettered pages from the second issue of Rick Remender's highly anticipated Marvel NOW! take on Captain America, which sees Steve Rogers once again rocking those long goldi-locks..

Says Remender of the new series..

"He's taking down super villains and saving the world and in the midst of all of this, Steve Rogers the person gets lost in the shuffle. He is so exhausted but driven by this sense of duty that when this situation arises and things move forward, he's going to have a very big reaction. I'll deal with the fallout from things like 'Avengers Vs. X-Men' and how it affects Cap in 'Uncanny Avengers' where you're also getting the return of the Red Skull. This is going to be a very different thing and won't really deal with those ramifications so much. He's got his mind on other stuff in this adventure."

For the love of god... Somebody give JRJR some shrooms so he can think creatively again. His art keeps getting worse.

@indigobolt956 Yes! This is a must if you're trying to jump into a cap series, especialy if rick remender is writing. You should also check out uncanny x force by him as well, its brilliant.

His artwork on this looks good with the darker colors tho. Artwork aside, the story sounds and looks epic from what I've been reading up on. I'm excited to pick this up. In remender I trust.

Pretty sure Remender will do good work as Brubaker did before him . JRJR's art looks to have changed a little bit thanks to the colorist it looks good

This series has me intrigued. I have to be honest: I was only buying the Ultimate titles but this, Uncanny Avengers and All-New X-Men have me interested in the main continuity again. Before that, I was pretty much a Spidey guy who gave up around the time Peter became bffs with X-Man. Luckily, or maybe not so luckily, I am blind and my fiancee is nice enough to read the comics for me through my Marvel iPhone app so I don't have to worry about bad artwork! :P

P.S. I've read good things... or some divided things too I guess... on Morrison's X-Men run awhile back... is that worth seeking out? Also, more related to this topic, I have only been blind for about 11 years... so when I read Spider-Man when I could see still. If Romita Jr's art is the same as back then, I don't care for it either. Kudos to him for having his own style but I don't like the blocky characters he draws... his females look attrocious because of this style too. The straight and hard lines make them all look a bit too masculine.

I think a lot of people only support JRjr because of his name. I appreciate the unique aspects of his work regarding his style, but in terms of technicality... his anatomical understanding absolutely frustrates me (In the frame where Cap is sitting: Look at his pigeon-toed foot, lack of neck, the disjointed connection between his pelvis and torso, and the unnatural staging of his chest.) This has always bothered me about JRjr's work. He pushes Liefeld proportional inaccuracy at times -- albeit not quite to that extreme. Romita Jr's work is very stylized -- reminding me of Mignola's art in some ways (heavy use of chiaroscuro and bold linework). But unlike Mignola, JRjr's work comes across as lazy and misguided.

How is JRJR still working? easily my least favorite artist in the biz. i love remender though.

@Godzillafart Exactly. Some people on here define art to be one form and one form only. Smh, thats like defining a human being to be angry all the time when we know thats not true. Humans have many different emotions, just like how art has many different styles by different artists. I appreciate JR's art, especialy the colors, and remenders writing. So I look forward to this title.

@Temple: Romita doesn't color these things. And that was an aweful analogy.

@Godzillafart: I know you've been around CBM forever, but if that sentence was the dumbest thing you've ever seen posted here, it leads me to believe you don't actually read too many comments...

Your status as an art/anatomy teacher obviously means that your opinion is more valid than mine would ever be. However, while I respect your view of JRjr as one of "the best in the biz", I stand by my original statements.

For someone who teaches anatomy, surely you must recognize that given the position of Cap's shin/tibia, he couldn't place his foot in such away unless his ankle were broken... the foot placement would only work if his shin were moved to match. The arch of his chest could not posibly face the way in which it is presented given the positioning of his back, based on the implications of the visible placement of his obliques. Regarding his neck -- I am NOT commenting on the artist's intentions relating to emotional expression through active posing, but rather; Romita has established Cap's shoulder's in such a way that his neck can only exist if his mandible is contacting his clavicle... these are not "false" statements, as you stated.

Look at the cover. His thighs are horribly out of proportion and the way JR's exaggerated the knee-lock makes it looks like Cap has goat legs. Also, notice how his right forearm is missing a chunk behind the "gun", and the little girls "wad" of fingers sprouting from Captain America's hand. If you truly understand anatomy yourself, you cannot deny these inaccuracies (unless you choose to blindly support Romita Jr without questioning his work ethic... or, like the adjunct "professor" I assume you are, you're just bad at your job).

Don't get me wrong -- at his best, JRjr can be an exceptional artist. But he's just not even trying any more.

@DoctorDoak I said, "I appreciate JR's art(,)comma". I never said JR was the colorist did I? And how is that awful analogy? Its probably too deep for small minded people like you. Also, you have "awful" spelling. Thats something you need to work on, along with your shitty attitude.
DoctorDoak
DoctorDoak - 11/16/2012, 5:09 PM

@Temple: "I appreciate JR's art, especialy the colors." You implied that the colors were an aspect of his art. And I may have misspelled "awful", and I just noticed I also missed "possibly." These are things I simply overlooked due to a lack of proof-reading. But maybe you should work on your spelling as well, especially words like "especially." I wasn't planning on being a dick about this when I noticed it before, but the pot's calling the kettle black now.

And honestly my friend, I apologize for my attitude. I've had an awful week and tonight was the worst. I really just need to calm down. I shouldn't be venting on these boards -- I look like a fool, and I'm sorry to you and to Godzilla.
