Marvel have today announced that Venom will be moving to the City of Brotherly Love in this December's Venom #28 as Flash Thompson leaves New York behind in order to make a fresh start. "Now, he's trying to do the right thing. He's reassessing what it means to be a hero. And he's looking for a fresh start," series writer Cullen Bunn explains to The Associated Press. "This means a lot of things for Flash. He's surrounding himself with new people — such as tabloid journalist Katy Kiernan and his new love interest, the Asgardian Valkyrie. He's changing his approach to being a superhero. And he's looking for a change of scenery. I've always liked that Marvel superheroes are adventuring in the 'real' world. Certainly, there will be some fictional elements popping up in stories, but I'll try to keep it as grounded in the actual city as possible. It's time Philly gets a little Marvel Universe face-time. Local landmarks, neighborhoods, legends, and history will play a role in the book."

Editor Tom Brennan (a former resident of Philadelphia) had this to say about why it's the right place for the Symbiote wearing war hero to settle down. "All the while that I lived there, I wanted a superhero for the city of Philadelphia, a town full of heart, hustle and hope — and I don't care what anyone says — some of the nicest people I've ever met. Sure, they don't suffer fools, and you've got to be mindful if you cross against the light, but I found the City of Brotherly Love to be a character in and of itself that I thought more fiction should explore. We're not just moving Venom to Philly in hopes of getting free hoagies, though we'll take them. Flash Thompson has been on an emotional roller coaster. His superhero career almost cost him everything. This is a good man with a troubled past who needed a fresh start, and thought the City of Brotherly Love was the perfect place for him to take his next steps in becoming the hero he was born to be."

I don't even read Marvel and I know why he has guns, get a clue before you start blindly bashing shit.

Venom is not Eddie Brock anymore, he is Flash Thompson who is/was a soldier.

There just wasn't enough violent crime to go around in NYC, so Philly's a logical choice.

I would have liked to see him in NY longer so they could link his story with Peter's more. Flash's Venom never had any real presence in ASM.

Fun Fact: The original idea of a new costume for Spider-Man that would later become the character Venom was conceived of by a Marvel Comics reader from Norridge, Illinois named Randy Schueller. Marvel purchased the idea for $220.00

I guess Venom was a victim of his own popularity. Obviously I understand comic books are about sales and if you have a character come in who grabs the public interest then you use him.

However I think they'd had been better only using Venom maybe once every 2 years or something. Keep him in the background so aware of him, but build up every encounter over time. That way each battle feels epic, rather than him becoming 'just another villain'

However same could be said about a lot of popular villains in comic books, I think be interesting to see the impact Joker will have after a years absence.

The people complaining probably haven't even read this series because it's actually one of the best books out right now. Read it before you speak negatively about it.

Seems like Venom is the only one that keeps evolving as a character and pretty much any one can be a host for Venom thus creating new stories and not bore the reader.

I like it.

Venom as an independent series is a stupid idea. I preferred when he was like Spidey's Joker.

And, yeah I know it's Flash and not Eddie Brock now. But it's still VENOM. And once you take a name and keep switching it back and forth between hero and villain, you get a shitty mess like Sylar from heroes.

Jesus christ. Flash has been Venom for well over a year now and he's been using guns the entire time.

Everyone that knows this: is it really surprising that there are people on this site talking and complaining about things in comics even though they dont read them? Most people on this sitw dont read comics...unfortunately. If they did they wouldnt sound so ridiculous when trying to talk about these things.

I get what you're saying, and normally i would totally agree. Magneto is a perfect example of what you are saying.

However, Venom is a little different. VENOM is just the symbiote. The real character is the person using the suit. Brock was a very good hist because he was able to keep the suit under control for a very long time. Sure he was a murdering prick when it came to Spidey. But when he wasnt fighting Spidey, he was a vigilante much like Punisher. He fought crime, sure he killed the criminals, but he was still an antihero.

When Mac Gargan had the suit, a truly evil person, he liked what the suit was telling him to do and embraced it fully. Thats why when he wore the suit he was very savage and monstrous looking.

Now that Flash has it, a morally good person and former US Marine, he can use it for good. Although the suit is trying to corrupt him. Thats why he only wears it for 24 hours at a time, otherwise it would turn him evil eventually as well.

I dont mean to sound like im talking down to you, because again, i agree with what u said, just not with Venom. Venom, the symbiote, is just a tool for the character possessing it. I think that gets lost on a lot of people.

Anyway, this series has been fantastic. I love the dynamic between Flash and the suit, how he's trying to do good with an evil weapon. I also love that when gets pushed over edge you can see the suit start to take over. Remember, no one is immune to the suit's corruption. They can only hold it off for so long.

So in essence, the Venom symbiote, as a character itself, hasnt changed one single bit. Its still evil and still tries to corrupt whoever the host is. When you look at it like that, i think you'll agree.

But for the record, anyone that thinks Brock won't eventually be Venom again just doesnt know comics...

As a student in Philly I always thought this place would be good for a superhero... But Venom? A hero? What happened to Venom being Spiderman's most dangerous villain? I prefer that Venom over any other type.

But this is an interesting angle to explore with the character. I still think things will eventually go back to normal and he'd go back to being the villain everyone knows and loves.

@CorndogBurglar

Nah, i don't take any offense. And I understand where you're coming from.

But for me, knowing the flip-flopping nature of most comic book writers, eventually we'll have an evil 'Venom' again to fight against Spidey. Now this 'Venom' could be Eddie Brock (who, by the way, has already had a brief stint as an anti-hero), someone new, or maybe Flash himself turning evil in a typical comic book twist.

Now say somewhere farther down the line, some the writers decide "Okay, the story's over. And since 'Venom' has history as a good guy and that turned out fine, maybe we can turn him good now". And then 'Venom' becomes evil again somewhere even farther down the line... and so on and so forth.

My problem is that once the idea of 'Venom' being good/anti-hero has been introduced, the flip-flopping nature like Magneto or Sylar is inevitable in the long run.

So I don't dislike this move because of what's happened so far but rather because of what will inevitably ensue.

Not to mention, the proposed Venom film (with Venom as an anti-hero, of course) by Avi Arad doesn't help. --That idea too came from 'Venom's anti-hero run in the comics.

See, what I mean now? This is the beginning of the end for the character being even somewhat consistent.
