COMICS: Zeb Wells And Joe Madureira To Helm New Team-Up Series, Avenging Spider-Man!

Marvel have announced plans for a brand new ongoing Spider-Man comic book series which writer Zeb Wells says will be a, "big super action movie of Spider-Man every month"! Hit the jump for art and details...

Many thanks to Marvel's "The Next Big Thing" live blog for the following quotes, information and art. You can head on over there to read the ongoing report in its entirety, but here are some of the best excerpts.

"With Dan Slott nailing all the Peter Parker soap opera stuff in Amazing Spider-Man, we wanted to a book about Spider-Man as a super hero, out there in the Marvel Universe with the Avengers. This is the big super action movie of Spider-Man every month, with Joe Mad on art."

The first arc will see Spider-Man and the Red Hulk headed deep underground to deal with the Mole Man and encountering a brand new threat.

The genesis of the book came from when Zeb was working on Amazing Spider-Man and kicked around the idea of bringing Marvel Team-Up back. Steve didn't go for it because he never liked those stories that didn't feel important to the main series. Avenging Spider-Man is Marvel Team-Up but where the stories have a major impact on Spider-Man and the Avengers.

The action will not be limited to New York City. Zeb wants to see Spidey in Asgard.

Zeb says most of the stuff with Peter Parker's personal life will continue to be handled in Amazing Spider-Man, as Dan Slott has "a great hold on that." This series is more action.

One villain Zeb is guaranteeing is The Vulture, as he has an idea.

This book WILL be monthly.

"I don't like working on stuff unless it's going to make an impact. I want people to talk about this and remember it. If I finally get my crack at Spider-Man and then blow it, ugh. I will happily walk in front of a bus to sell more copies after I finish." -Joe Madureira

Avenging Spider-Man will not stop Amazing Spider-Man from coming out two times a month.

Steve keeps Dan Slott up to date on Avenging and vice versa, so while for the most part each book will be a venue for the separate creators to tell their stories, they will cross over if the opportunity arises.

I agree, that whole "who is the Red Hulk?" story line was such crap. I think it coulda been ANYone else other than Ross and I woulda been happier. Actually, they shoulda never told us.

Joe Mad is one of my favorite aritst. Hes the one to inspire me to start drawing comics with his 90s run on X-Men. My other favorites include Jim Lee and Micheal Turner

@Kylum616 and Marvel72
How can u say that His art has always been on point no matter who he draws. Just look at the 4th pic top panel at the avengers assembled. Thats classic stuff to me. I just hope they get Tim Townsend to ink for him.

Live Blog was a little underwhelming. I was expecting something more on level with DC's game-changer.

i love the art style! feels perfect for spider-man.

does anyboy know how many issues of spider-man (taking place in the regular marvel universe) come out each month? I'm counting 6: 2 amazing, avenging, ff, avengers, and new avengers.

Why weren't they honest? "Spider-Man Team-Up keeps getting cancelled. This is Spider-Man Team-Up, but instead we're calling it Avenging Spider-Man."
Who does he avenge?
Will the series be cancelled after 6 issues?
If it's straight out action each issue, after a while, who'll care?

GraphicCity is right. Marvel need to step up and provide something on the level of DC's game-changer.

REALLY???

Wells is a good writer, but IMO, Joe Mad is one of the worst artists to come along in years. I can't stand his work.

We don't need another Spidey book with bad art. I'm struggling as it is with ASM with such bad art work over the last while.

I won't be picking this up.

I always liked Joe Madureira. Just look at how he draws Spider-Woman ;) One question though. Look at the B&W pencils showing the team with Spider-Woman on the left. Her costume is ripped at several spots on her leg. Why doesn't this ever happen right over the nipple? Just sayin.

I think they need to get rid of Spidey and Wolvie as Avengers. I thought it was cool when Spidey first joined in the late 80's, but neither one of them fits the Avengers team dynamic imo.

That art is awful. It might fit with some kind of comic based on an anime cartoon show, but not a superhero title. Look at how cartoonishly exaggerated the Hulk is drawn, for example. The guy isn't ten by ten.

Looks like we might finally be heading back to the days of one issue of Amazing a month. That would be good. There used to be three different Spidey titles a month, each focusing on a different aspect of Parker's life.

@ Kylum616
agreed we have our own opinions
McNevin has a more realistic spin and Mad seems to come from an anime background. The art might not be what you prefer but saying its terrible is going a lil far.

All fixed bro.Amazo has a brand new bag! lol :)
Back on subject, that artwork is great! VERY dynamic,as is especially needed for Spidey imo.I don't usually go for the cartoony stuff so much, but it really suits Spider-man.I think it gets his poses over well.

I love Joe Mad's Spiderman work. I've been hoping he'd o a Spidey series for a while and this is awesome cause he'll get to draw most of the Marvel U too. And the title didn't work for me at first but then again he's an Avenger now so it fits.
BIGBMH
BIGBMH - 6/13/2011, 1:18 PM
Marvel doesn't need a "DC game changer." first, we don't even know how well this reboot is going to turn out. Second, there aren't any fundemental marvel problems that warrant the entire universe being erased.

p.s. I don't understand the people hating on the art. Consider the fact that taste is a factor when judging this type of thing. I probably wouldn't like some of the artists you think are oh-so-incredible.

It's good to see Mad! flexin his muscles again (because i for one feel that he does need to clear his name after that Jeph Loeb Ultimates 3 bullsh*t.) I really like what he's done so far on Spidey here.

However, it seems he didn't bother to research the current Iron Man armor..but who cares, at least its not one of 52 new books...

2 cents down

@Intruder ...

Erik Larsen and Mark Bagley's art is better than Joe M.

And BTW none can touch McFarlane's Spiderman.

This is exactly what Spiderman needs right now. The last couple runs have been so soap opera-ey, I'm excited for a an action oriented, wise-cracking spidey. And I love a big eyed, lean/ripped Spidey - it suits his agility and flexibility better.

Artwork looks fantastic and the concept sounds intriguing but isn't this a bit of a u-turn for Marvel after they cancelled most of Spidey's other titles after 'Spectacular' and the like?

The last time Mravel did something big on the scale that DC is doing it was called "Ultimate" and people are still bitching about it...

DC is just doing its "Ultimate" versions. the only problem is it seems that we won't have any alternative like we did with marvel keeping 616 going...

Yeah this looks really cool.

Always loved the team-ups since I was a kid. Brave & The Bold, Marvel Team-Ups, What-Ifs, all of them.

Also, J-Mad's art looks amazing as usual.
