CONFIRMED: Marvel Cancel FANTASTIC FOUR; Series Is "Going Away For A While"

At the "Axel-in-Charge" panel at the New York Comic-Con today, Marvel have finally made it official; the Fantastic Four will come to an end with issue #642 in a storyline showcasing the "closing act" of Marvel's First Family and sending the book "away for a while". Check it out!

Prepare to say goodbye to Marvel's First Family next year with the cancellation of the Fantastic Four now official. Details are scarce at the moment, but the news was confirmed by Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso and writer James Robinson. The latter praised the many writers who have come before him (Matt Fraction, Jonathan Hickman and Mark Waid were referenced) and talked a little about bringing back the classic blue costumes and once again uniting the heroes as the team readers have always known and loved. "They're going to all come back and be the team that you love. Everyone will have their moment, from Sharon Ventura to Wyatt Wingfoot." The writer would then go on to talk about the cancellation of the series, stating, "The book is reverting to its original numbers, and the book is going away for a while. I'm moving towards the end of 'Fantastic Four.' I just want to reassure people that you will not leave this book with a bad taste in your mouth." Fantastic Four" #642, the start of "The End is Fourever," will hit in January.

The key word here is "a while", and we all know that even if Marvel killed these characters off, they'd likely return one day. If reports that the only reason this is being done is to spit 20th Century Fox ahead of the release of Josh Trank's The Fantastic Four, it's more than a little disappointing, but taking the team away as we know it and perhaps bringing them back in a few years time could ultimately be for the best. I personally haven't enjoyed a run on the book since Mark Waid and Mark Millar's, so I can live with this. How about you guys? Sound off with your thoughts below!

"for a while"

So... when you get the rights back? Is that "a while?" Seems legit, Marvel.

Really? They're cancelling a comic that no one reads? Surprising

They'll be back in a year, probably close to the movie, that way sell could go up

"FOR AWHILE"

Meaning their trying to get their shit straight before giving them a soft return in comics, not bc of Fox.

Meh. We will see more of Fantastic Four eventually, if you want more Fantastic Four reread some of the older stories. Some of the Ultimate stuff is perfection.

Ultimate FF was awesome or at least the first 40 issues were. The artwork especially in the Namor and Marvel Zombies arc was fantastic.

Marvel has no honor and dignity.
Ok I sold you something, now give it back or I do the dirty on you!
Kill the most important mutant, transform the rest into no mutants and close F4. It's worse than childish.

@vPuik

Occasionally. It's not great but I like to have the option. The thing that annoys me is the fact that Fantastic 4 was Marvel's first and best superhero team when I was a kid and now idiots like to shit on the property in general because they don't have good movies. Comics ALWAYS come before the movies to me.

With a reboot coming, it barely matters what happens to the F4 team. We already know that the team members have an important role to play in the upcoming cataclysm, so there's no reason to keep the book going when so few people are buying it.
If I'm right and the Ultimate and 616 universes combine into one, we can probably expect to see a new FF #1 in a year or so, resembling Trank/Vaughn's movie version.

All this talk about Marvel mocking Fox is utter nonsense. Marvel wants FF movies to succeed so the book will be successful again.

If the comics weren't selling well at all then I can see why they cancelled it.

btw, the current FF comics are excellent and make me look forward to their disbanding. I'm hooked for the whole story.
