CHAPTER 10:
THE GREATEST SHOWS ON NETFLIX
Ever, since the FOX DareDevil movie came out, FOX was holding on to the rights, even after the critical and financial failure that was Elektra. In the 2010s, FOX announced a reboot of the character, but it kept getting held back due to the studio having trobule finding directors. In 2012, Marvel said that if a DareDevil movie wasn't filming by October, the rights would revert back to Marvel, and thus FOX gave up on the reboot and ended up giving back the rights. However, Marvel did offer them a deal where they could keep them if they gave the F4 rights back, but FOX said No because F4 was bound to bring them lots of cash.
In early 2013, it was announced that DareDevil would indeed be a part of the MCU. However, that October, it was said that Marvel would be making a VOD miniseries of the character, and that they would do the same with Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. This would all lead up to a miniseries about The Defenders, similar to what they did with Avengers.
But I digress. In 2013, Drew Goddard was hired as the show's executive producer and showrunner. Goddard came to Marvel about DareDevil, mainly because he wanted it to be a film. However, he and Marvel agreed a show would be the better route, as they didn't want a toned-down Pg-13 DareDevil. Another reason would be because it would be cheaper, as they felt like the movies where the characters save the world, as opposed to the neighborhood, seemed more profitable.
However, while Drew ended up writing and directing a few episodes, he would step down as showrunner on May 2014 so he could go to Sony to work on another Marvel property, The Sinister Six...
Anyway, another of the show's executive produces, Steven DeKnight, went on the become the showrunner. However, Goddard was still an executive producer, and would remain a consaultant on the show.
When it comes to casting, it was tough finding DareDevil. Both Michael C. Hall and Zac Efron (not kidding) were rumoured for the part, before it went to Charlie Cox. This makes sense as Matt Murdockis a Catholic (LIKE ME!) and Charlie Cox portrayed St. Josemaria Escrivia in There Be Dragons.
In November of 2013, it was announced that all of the Defender shows would be Netflix Original Shows. When asked why, Disney CEO Bob Iger said that ABC, who was doing SHIELD and the upcoming Agent Carter, and Disney XD, who was doing all the animated shows, would not be able to handle so many shows.
The show premired on Netflix on April 10, 2015. And people were amazed at what they saw. The show was nothing you would see in the MCU movies. It was dark. It was edgy. It was bold. It was deep. It was violent. It was bloody. It was adult. And It was AMAZING!
I love this show. I think it's the best show on Netflix yet (But I haven't watched Jessica Jones yet, so who knows?). I love the writing. I love the acting. I love the fights. I love the characters, espicially MAtt Murdock (finally, a Catholic superhero other than Night Crawler and maybe Cap). And the Kingpin. The Kingpin!
I think Loki is great, but The Kingpin is the Best Marvel Villain yet. This guy is scary. He's threating. He's short-tempered. When he smashed the guy's head with a car door, I felt scared for whoever he would talk to. But he's also deep and sympethetic. Not only his scenes with Vanessa, but also his backstory. The episode that reveals his childhood is still my favorite episode. This guy is great.
Back to the show itself, the whole world loved it, and it was popular and successful enough to get a second season with GI Joe: Retaliation'sElodie Young joining thecast as Elektra and TWD's Jon Bernthal joining the castas The Punisher.
When Marvel Television was formed in 2009 when Disney bought Marvel, one show that was confirmedwas Melissa Rosenberg creating the show: AKA Jessica Jones.
The show was originally meant to be on ABC, with the intention to premire in 2011. At SDCC 2011, it was revealed that Luke Cage would be on the show. Another character revealed to be on the show was Carol Danvers...
Later that year, it was said that the show was pushed a year back. Rosenberg said that Jessica Jones would be a dark, complex character who suffered from PTSD. She also said that Jessica and Luke's daughter would appear later on in the show. It was also confirmed that Danvers would be a pivotal character in the show.
However, in 2012, ABC revealed that they had passed on the show. However, Marvel and Rosenberg were not going to give up. They went around seeing if any other networks would pick up the show. However, in 2013, Marvel announced their Defenders/Netflix plan, resulting in the show being on Netflix. However, Rosenberg had to start over from the begining in order to make the show work. Which meant no Carol Danvers.
In January of 2015, Netflix said it was a possibility for the show to go on for multiple seasons. That July, Rosenberg said that while she was hopeful for a second season, it might not happen until AFTER Defenders.
Now for casting. A lot of actors were considered for Jessica and Luke. For Jessica, Alexandra Daddario, TeresaPalmer, Marin Ireland, and Jassica De Gouw were all conisidered for the part, but Krysten Ritter got the role. Terry Crews said he was intereseted in playing Luke Cage and Lance Gross was considered for the part, but Mike Colter got the part.
Now as I'm writing this, the show premired on Netflix yesterday, so I have an excuse for not watching it yet. Although from what I hear, it's a great show. From what I hear, the show is praised for the same reason as DareDevil; it's deep. It's been praiesed for the acting, the nior-style approach, and covering very dark places that Marvel would usually never cover like PTSD or rape.
Will this lead to another season?
So this is as far the Marvel has gotten, but what will happen for Marvel in the future.
