AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: Marvel Comics Announces The Return Of Artist John Romita Jr. This April! AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: Marvel Comics Announces The Return Of Artist John Romita Jr. This April!

John Romita Jr. is widely considered one of the greatest artists to ever grace the pages of Amazing Spider-Man, and it's now been confirmed he'll return to the title this April. Check out the teaser here!

In the pages of Amazing Spider-Man, Ben Reilly is currently taking centre stage as Peter Parker continues to recover from a devastating run-in with the U-Foes. It appears the clone will soon be making the move to Hollywood, with Peter back in costume this April (right in time for the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man #900).

Now, Marvel Comics has announced that legendary artist John Romita Jr. is set to return to the series. He's contributed to many iconic issues, including Amazing Spider-Man #600, the introduction of Hobgoblin in issue #238, and J. Michael Straczynski's acclaimed run on the series in the early 2000s.

A closer look at the teaser image below suggests that another new #1 issue might be coming our way in April, though Marvel Comics does at least include legacy numbering on its titles these days in the midst of these seemingly endless relaunches. As of right now, there's no word on who will be writing the series, though Patrick Gleason has become something of a fan-favourite choice.

We're expecting more to be revealed about future plans for Amazing Spider-Man soon, but Romita Jr. - who can sometimes be a divisive choice of artist among fans - returning is undeniably exciting.

Check out the teaser below:

Great news! Keep him and Patrick Gleason as artists, dump the rest.

I don't want to sound negative, since I started reading Marvel comics with JMS/JRjr run on Spider-Man, but JRjr's best days are kinda behind him. Can't quite put my finger on it, but his more recent work just hasn't looked as dynamic. Still gladly take him over something like another patch of Spider-Man drawn by Humberto Ramos.

@FinnishDude - Hard to keep being original after so many years, it’s not necessarily his fault so much as once you have seen 1 million comics, it’s hard to be impressed. Guarantee some kid would like it

I don’t even read comics, anymore I mean, that’s just my two cents

@FinnishDude - nah dude you're on the money. I used to be *really* hard on JRjr (his art on World War Hulk absolutely kills that story for me) but having seen him in interviews it really sucks cuz he seems like a really, really cool guy.

Has a new writer been announced yet or are they sticking with the current ones for awhile?

Mark Bagley and Romita Jr have done some of the best artwork for Spider-Man

@Mrcool210 - Yeah i like to think of JMS ending his run at #500. That issue and the stuff before it is really great. It's after 500 that it starts getting dicey...

“The legend returns…” More like son of the legend. And Jr isn’t even a pale shadow of dad.

His father is the Legend! Jr’s work is sub-par, I’m not sure why he keeps getting work.

He also didn’t have anything to do with the Hobgoblin saga, again that was his father

@DarthLaney - I think JR is a co-creator of the character Hobgoblin but his father SR did draw the first cover of Hobgoblin.

JRjr has a very distinct art style. You either love his artwork or you hate it. His style is very blocky and messy, however, it works well with certain characters.

I for one have never been a fan, but I can appreciate his contribution to the industry.

I loved JRJR's work in the 90's. He was REALLY good and could draw any character very well with his distinctive style. I used to draw and he was an inspiration on tech equipment and perspective also.

But seeing his more recent work... I'm not a fan.

My guess is he produces pages real fast and editors have put more and more pressure on him lately. Cause to me it always seems like his bad art pieces look like made in a rush.

I grew up reading his 2000s Spidey stuff, so I'll always associate him with that, but I've always found his stuff very "blocky" - in the recent Superman stuff it was particularly bad.

HOWEVER, in that teaser image above, there's a nice bit of roundness back in his design for Spidey... maybe he's trying something new, coming back to the title? Either way, v excited to see who gonna be writing.

Hickman or Zdarsky, surely? (Wouldn't mind Cates, but he's fairly busy with Hulk & Thor atm)

I’d rather see him draw Spider-Man instead of Superman…

I really like Romita JR's 1980s work. But when he returned to Spider-Man in the 1990s, his work had deteriorated. It was a mess. Looked like layouts more than finished work.

Pleace announce the return of Bendis as well.

2 legends i could do without in DC.

@Doomsday8888 - He left Marvel to make tv and movies, and he just got his Producer's wings for Naomi. Even after AT&T treating him dirty by taking his exclusivity contract Baldy McSpeechBubbles isn't going anywhere.

@Reeds2Much
He's down to 1 ongoing at DC (JL) and even then his run is about to end (quite quickly if i must say so).

Once Didio was out, Bendis lost all his power over at DC, mf still has some leverage, he GOT to have some dirt on someone, which is why he landed on the LOSH TAS but i dunno, i feel hopeful, DC wont publish his creator owned stuff, Dark Horse will, maybe he'll get to write Batman down the line but i think that's it, he wont stay at DC for 20 years like in Marvel, lel.

Thank f*ck.

Eesh. His stuff is really hit and miss, especially on Superman as someone already pointed out. His body proportions can be strange; kinda robot looking edges to his forms, arms as long as legs, huge boots, and weird shaped jawlines... and he avoids drawing real feet almost as much as Rob Liefeld. He has had some cool stylistic stuff in the past and maybe he's worked on some of his weaknesses after the more recent criticism.

His father, however...

Grew up on the Jr/JMS run but after that I never really liked his art. It worked great for my 10 year old brain at the time, he draw Spider-Man well but I’m over the block faces at this point.

Good, he's a much better fit for Marvel's tone and style than DC. His only DC work that was actually good was All Star Batman. However, his style works a lot better with Marvel characters.
