Green Lantern #18

Rating: ★★★★1/2

As Wrath of the First Lantern continues, Geoff Johns’ run on Green Lantern rapidly approaches its end. Although I love his work on Green Lantern overall, things have been hit and miss with the introduction of new human Green Lantern Simon Baz. However, I though this issue was one of the best in a while. This most likely due to the fact that we finally see more of Hal and Sinestro after very brief appearances in backup stories over the last few months, but in this issue the two meet Simon Baz, and of course Sinestro takes an immediate disliking to his replacement. This issue mostly revolves around Hal and Sinestro arguing over their next course of action, but if there’s one thing Geoff Johns is great at, it’s writing anything with Hal and Sinestro. It’s great to see these two just riffling again. Anytime the two are together the page comes alive, and that’s thanks to some roller-coaster dialogue from Geoff Johns. The artwork is also perfect for this issue and works very well for the two different sequences. The sequence in the dead zone is shady, murky and dark, whilst the sequence back in space is vibrant and much more alive with colour. It was nice to see Sinestro come out on top this issue whilst Baz still finds a place in the story instead of fading into the background. Also, the issue ends with a very interesting turn of events that will get long-time fans of the series very excited.

Green Arrow #18

Rating: ★★★★★

In just a couple of issues, Green Arrow has become one of the best comics I’m reading. And the series has outdone itself here. The new story got to an incredible start last month, and the blood-pumping thrill ride doesn't stop here. This issue doesn't let up for a second. If you’re not on the edge of your seat, you must be reading an advert and not realise it. Green Arrow is one of the classiest comics out there right now. Take away the writing and it would still be one of the best comics running now because of such beautiful artwork. I really can’t do this issue justice. The story is hugely interesting and is setting up for a big shocker for next month. Oliver is beginning to unravel a part of his past that has been kept secret from him until now and I’m so excited to see what is really going on. It’s great to read a comic where you actually don’t know where the story is going to go. There were several moments in this issue where I was concerned for Oliver’s safety despite knowing that nothing fatal was going to happen to him, because of the dialogue that doesn’t let you catch your breath for a second until you’ve finished the issue. Like I said, Green Arrow is one of the best series running now and #18 is easily the best comic on shelves this week. As someone who was never a big Green Arrow, even I can recommend this comic.

Superior Spider-Man #5

Rating: ★★★★

(REMINDER: MAJOR SPOILER BELOW!)

I’ve had mixed feelings about this series since it began, and something tells me I’m not the only one. However, this issue was a turning point for me. Although I’m still not sold on the whole idea of Superior Spider-Man, this was a great story. I specifically want to mention Spidey’s face-off with Massacre. I was so glad to see Doc Ock take things to the next level here by murdering Massacre. For a moment, I feared that Ock was going to give him a second chance, but I’m very glad to see him do something this extreme instead. Even if you didn’t enjoy this issue, you have to admit that Dan Slott isn’t afraid to take risks. I admit that, and I also did enjoy this issue. I, however, am still not interested in the romance/comedy aspects of this series. Ock going on dates and being followed everywhere by Peter’s ghost just doesn’t fit in this story that I’m otherwise enjoying, especially with the new [superior] artwork. I’ll be sticking around to see where this goes, and if Doc Ock can be tamed. Dan Slott promises more shocks in the future. What else could he possibly have up his sleeve?

"What the hell does Peter Parker's ghost do all day? Does he even sleep?"

@marvel72 To be honest, I'm surprised myself! I picked it up, and I wasn't too impressed. I decided not to review because it felt so short it almost didn't seem worth reviewing. I think I'll review it a few issues in when there's more to talk about. Thanks for reading though!

@marvel72 Yes I did enjoy some aspects of the issue. I liked Hawkeye's role in it for example. But yes the continuity is tricky to get your head around. I've been reading All-New X-Men and really enjoying it but I need to catch up on Avengers!
