With Warner Bros. looking to reboot Constantine for HBO Max, Legends of Tomorrow star Matt Ryan has been forced to take on another role in The CW series. Fans will get to hear him play the character in the upcoming animated short Constantine: The House of Mystery, of course, but it appears his time as the chainsmoking demonologist has ended to make way for a new Hellblazer.
The Illuminerdi is reporting that the streaming service is currently eyeing Ṣọpẹ Dìrísù (Gangs of London) to take on the title role in the series that comes from UK author Guy Bolton and executive producer J.J. Abrams. The British Nigerian actor put himself on the map with an unmissable performance in Netflix's horror movie His House, and Dìrísù would no doubt bring a lot to this DC role.
A recent longline revealed that, "The series blends urban action, body horror, and the supernatural on the streets of modern-day London. It follows a young man whose entire world is upended when a chance encounter with a young girl pulls him into the dark and treacherous world of the occult."
With Warner Bros. looking to expand its DC offerings on HBO Max, it looks like Constantine will be one of several projects that are building to a Justice League Dark movie. Remember, Emerald Fennell is developing a Zatanna movie and Angela Robinson is hard at work on a Madame X series. Hopefully, the likes of Swamp-Thing and Deadman aren't too far behind as this idea does have potential.
Fans have mixed feelings on Abrams seemingly overseeing this part of the DC Extended Universe after his divisive contributions to the Star Trek and Star Wars franchises, but we'll see how this pans out.
Are you on board with Dìrísù potentially playing John Constantine?
