With so much love for the Netflix series and Charlie Cox's ever-expanding role in the MCU, it's all too easy to forget that 20th Century Fox released a Daredevil movie in 2003.
Starring Ben Affleck as the Man Without Fear, Michael Clarke Duncan as The Kingpin, Colin Farrell as Bullseye, and Jennifer Garner as Elektra, it had all the makings of a Marvel blockbuster that would make fans happy. Taking inspiration from Frank Miller, it was a darker comic book movie which, unfortunately, never quite came together the way it should.
With perhaps too many deviations from the source material, questionable VFX, and a lot of early 2000s cheese, Daredevil isn't exactly considered a classic, though we'd be lying to say it was all bad!
Garner made a lasting impact as Elektra and even received her own spin-off movie. Looking back at the skimpy costume she donned to play the assassin in an interview with Glamour, the actress admitted she faced more than a few challenges while wearing it.
"I had to be cut out of and sewn into the pleather pants every time I had to pee, and that was like a 45-minute undertaking so I definitely held it," Garner recalled. "I had so many chicken cutlet fake boobs in to make Elektra's boobs. I think there were like three on each side of different sizes, and everything was pushed up and out."
"I was just this close to a wardrobe malfunction at all times," she added. "There's not enough tape in the world to make this stuff safe."
In the same interview, Garner went on to reveal that she had at least some input in crafting Elektra's look. "I was in stunt rehearsal by then and [I knew] what kind of support I needed in my shoes and support I needed in flexibility, [the support] I needed in the pants or whatever they were to be able to fight because I fought. I fought a lot."
Elodie Yung was later tapped to play Elektra in the Daredevil TV series, though it's unclear whether she'll return in Disney+'s Daredevil: Born Again. Marvel Studios must know this is a character with major potential, so she'll no doubt show up sooner rather than later.
As for Garner, her superhero days are probably over, though we'd love to see the actress in a future Marvel or DC project...is it too much to hope she suits up one final time in Avengers: Secret Wars?
