A "Gory Horror" Adaptation Of CINDERELLA Is In Development

Yet another horror adaptation of a classic children's story is in the works, with the "dark, gory" Cinderella's Curse set for release this October...

The recent horror take on Winnie the Pooh, Blood and Honey, seems to have started something of a trend of much darker adaptation of children's classics, and we can now add Cinderella to the list.

According to Bloody Disgusting, ChampDog Films is developing Cinderella’s Curse, which is currently set for release in October 2023.

The movie is will be produced and directed by Louisa Warren, from a script by Harry Boxley (Mary Had A Little Lamb). The cast includes Kelly Rian Sanson, Chrissie Wunna and Danielle Scott.

“This an incredibly unique spin on the Cinderella we all love and know," Warren tells the site. "There are going to be some truly horrific deaths by her hands. I think the gore hounds are in for a treat in my dark retelling.”

Details are few and far between on this one, but it sounds like Cinderella is going to take a more active role in doling out justice to her Wicked Step Mother and sisters!

We have seen slightly darker takes on this tale over the years, and a previous horror-inspired version was released in India in 2021 to mixed reviews (see the trailer below).

These low-budget horror retellings of classic children's classics don't tend to do very well with critics, but they have proved to be pretty popular with audiences, so we should probably expect to see a lot more over the next couple of years.

More garbage crapping on a classic.

@DocSpock - To be fair Disney did it first.

@Matador -

You are absolutely right. I don't like ANY of Mickey the Rat's live action versions of Disney classic animated movies.

The wokeness isn't what bothers me like it does a lot of people. I just think they all suck.

@DocSpock - I can say I neutrally agree with you; they don't have the classic charm as the animated visuals were presented.

Would they have faired better as an animated CGI movie? Who knows but the Japanese culture still use 2-D visuals for most of their anime and look spectacular too.

Not sure why Disney decide to make some into live action.

@DocSpock - Jungle Book was the only live action one that didn't suck.

@marvel72 -

I could go with that. Jungle Book is my all-time fave of the classic Disney animated movies. The live action one was certainly the best of those.

@Alucard28 - well what if it was white chick style, get Damon Wayans, Junior, and introduce some new Wayans brother, and also add the scary movie elements to make it somewhat harbor, and, never mind. Don’t do any of that.

Ah yes, the children's classic where one stepsister cut off her toes and the other her heel to try to slip their feet into a slipper, and then had their eyes pecked out. Or the version where the stepmother danced the night away in a pair of red-hot iron shoes.

the cinderella story (not the name) has been around for thousands of years. different cultures all over the world have come up with their own version, but the poor girl rising to prominence trope is prevalent. and interestingly, what makes it uniquely a cinderella trope is the associated footwear. the most prominent of the cinderella version is by the brothers Grimm who in their story, the stepsisters die horrible deaths.

so this violent retelling is NOTHING new. but Cinderella being a vengeful killer should be an interesting twist.

I would love it if the government stopped extending out the IP owned by Disney beyond reasonable periods of time and it all went into public domain.

Sure we’d get more garbage like this, but we’d also get better versions of these stories than what Disney gives us - like GDT’s Pinocchio which was miles better than that terrible Disney version than recently came out.

I know we are years away from this happening, but imagine if Marvel or Star Wars were public domain and alternate versions could be created. Maybe then the fans could be respected.

These projects only get the greenlight because there is a market of incels who want to see classic children's characters turned into Sadistic murderers. And those same folks want to be the white knights of the Anti-Grooming community yet focus on sabotaging children's classics. Make it make sense?
