Disney's THE LITTLE MERMAID Finds Its Ariel In GROWN-ISH Actress/Singer Halle Bailey

Despite rumors that Spider-Man: Far From Home star Zendaya was in line for the role, it's been announced that Disney has cast Grown-Ish actress and one half of R&B duo Chloe x Halle Halle Bailey as Ariel.

Disney has found its Little Mermaid.

According to THR, up-and-coming actress and singer Halle Bailey has landed the lead role of Ariel in director Rob Marshall's upcoming live-action remake of the animated classic. Also set to go under the sea are Melissa McCarthy as the villainous sea-witch Ursula, and Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina as Flounder and Scuttle, respectively.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, who worked with Marshall on Mary Poppins Returns, will also work on original music for Mermaid along with composer Alan Menken.

There were persistent rumors that Spider-Man: Far From Home's Zendaya was Disney's top choice for Ariel, but if that was the case this report makes no mention of it.

Bailey, 19, is best known as part of R&B duo Chloe x Halle. Her only other acting credit is on Freeform's Yara Shahidi series Grown-ish.

@L0RDbuckethead - Why is Lady & the Tramp the biggest gig Justin Theroux got after The Leftovers, lmfao

@WakandanQueen - Never said she couldn't, so I'm not sure why you're pointing that out... I would've preferred Zendaya to the girl we got. I even posted this the other day on the Melissa McCarthy as Ursula article:

@tmp3 - For real though... he's too busy going after Peter Parker's live-action ex-girlfriends:

@L0RDbuckethead - People are already quick with the manips of what she'd look like with red hair:

@L0RDbuckethead - Hopefully his buddy Lindelof can cast him on a certain HBO show coming this fall... something he's jacked enough for, and would just need a few coats of blue paint.

@tmp3 - Hahaha that would honestly be awesome. The Lindelof connection could make it possible too. I never even thought of him for Dr. Manhattan, but I could totally see it.

Now I'm kind of wondering what Theroux would look like with his head shaved?

@Nerdman3000 - Not bad.

I've never heard of her until now but I checked out some of her music. She can definitely sing. And I didn't realize it until I looked at her IMDb, but I've seen her in Grown-ish, although it wasn't a memorable role because I don't remember who she was on it.
