Sarah Polley Set To Direct Disney's Live-Action BAMBI Remake

It was probably just a matter of time before Disney turned its attention to the deer! The latest classic to be given the live-action treatment is Bambi, and Sarah Polley (Women Talking) is set to direct.

The House of Mouse is really determined to work its way through its entire back catalogue!

Another live-action (though, we're really not sure that applies when all of the main characters will be CGI) take on a classic Disney animated feature is in the early stages of development, and this one will probably end up traumatizing a whole new generation of kids!

Deadline is reporting that a live-action reimagining of Bambi is in the works, with acclaimed director Sarah Polley - who recently won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for Women Talking - set to helm what will be the biggest project of her career.

A Bambi movie was planned back in 2020 with, Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Lindsey Beer on board as writers, but the trade isn't sure if they'll remain on this project or new scribes will be enlisted to pen a separate script.

The film tells "the coming-of-age story of Bambi, the young deer struck by tragedy who counts amongst his woodland pals the rabbit Thumper and a skunk named Flower."

The '40s original was the fifth animated film to be released by the studio, and famously (or infamously, if you happen to be one of the kids left shaken) includes the heartbreaking death of Bambi's mother at the hands of a deer hunter. The movie actually received mixed reviews when it was first released, but has gained a much larger fan-base over the years.

No release or production start dates have been announced.

What do you guys make of this news? Any interest in a live-action remake of Bambi?

A musical version? I seem to only remember the songs being Little April Shower, and Love is a Song (one of Disney’s seriously underrated tunes).

Hopefully it turns out okay. The question is how are they gonna try to make a movie about animals woke, this time?

Well at least they can't race or gender swap Bambi.

Give back your Oscar. It was undeserved, anyway.

@CoHost - Curious, which adapted screenplay do you think should have won? Did you have any particular issues with the screenplay for Women Talking?

@ClintThaHamster - Women Talking didn't feel like a movie. It was pretty much glorified filmed play. Dialogue consisted of monologues and characters were merely mouthpieces for the author rather than actual characters.

I would have had Glass Onion or Living win but that was weak year for that category.

bet this is going to be another ultra realistic looking, souless and expressionless remake just like Lion King

weirdly both lion king and bambi are two of the few movies with sequels that live up to the original and have better animation than the rest

To quote Jay Prescott Sherman:

“I DON’T want to see Rhett come back to Scarlett. I don’t want the guy from My Left Foot to become a punter for the Bears. I want Ali McGraw, Debra Winger, and Bambi’s mother to die.”

If I am Disney, i will try to start investing on a good anime adaptation to kickstart that wheel. Netflix's attempts are still mediocre atm

This morning somebody on Twitter posted, in response to this news, a clip from this past season of Barry. In the clip the director of CODA, which won Best Picture at the Oscars last year, talks about winning countless awards for her earnest, heartfelt independent drama… and the next movie she’s directing is a big budget studio Wonder Woman ripoff “with magic cubes and skybeams and shit”.

Ugh.
