The new trailer for Soul is now online, and this looks like it's going to be another heart-warming hit for Pixar.

The animated adventure tells the story of a jazz musician named Joe Gardner (Foxx), who lands the gig of a lifetime before suffering a freak accident which separates his soul from his body and sends it to the "You Seminar." There, he meets Tina Fey‘s 22, a soul who can’t stand humans but agrees to help Joe on his mission across the cosmos.

The film is directed by Pixar COO Pete Docter (Monsters Inc, Inside Out), and will also feature the voice talents of Blindspotting‘s Daveed Diggs, The Cosby Show‘s Phylicia Rashad, and The Roots drummer Questlove.

Check out the trailer below along with a poster and synopsis, and let us know what you think in the comments. Soul is set to hit theaters on June 19, 2020.

Joe Gardner, a middle school music teacher, has long dreamed of performing jazz music onstage, and finally gets a chance after impressing other jazz musicians during an opening act at the Half Note Club. However, an accident causes Gardner’s soul to be separated from his body and transported to the “You Seminar”, a center in which souls develop and gain passions before being transported to a newborn child, and Gardner must work with souls in training, such as 22, a soul with a dim view on life after being trapped for years at the You Seminar, in order to return to Earth before it’s too late.

Onward looked like cruise control

THIS looks like my kinda jam (though I'm not super jazzed that the first black main character in a pixar film immediately gets turned into a Smurf but....baby steps I guess)

@OmegaDaGrodd - I think that's a bit evidenced by them deciding to not delay it. Like, if they were massively behind something, I imagine they would want people to see it.

Also daddy Pete Docter has the best track record of all Pixar directors and is now the chief of the studio.

I'm sure it will be good, but I've grown a little tired of this "Welcome to the secret world of Toys/Monsters/Emotions/Souls" formula of Pixar films. They're executed with care, but to me it feels a bit like they're just applying this approach they're comfortable with to different concepts making for a subgenre of their slate that doesn't feel as fresh as something like Coco.

@BIGBMH - Coco? You mean "Welcome to the secret world of the dead"? ;)

@Bokis - Haha fair point. However, the overall approach of it felt a bit fresher than most of these. The first 3 of this formula are told from the perspective of the thing we're exploring whereas Coco was an ordinary person venturing into that world. On the surface, Soul feels a bit too much like Coco mashed up with Inside Out.

@BIGBMH - Yeah, I totally see your point! I appreciate the stories that are told and the emotions they make me feel but after a while it seems kinda formuleic.

@Bokis - I also realize that it's a bit hypocritical for me to complain about studio formulas as an MCU fan. I guess it just comes down to taste.

Pixar seems to be using a formula lately, the concept is like a literal mix of Coco and inside out. Hopefully it will focus more about the real human and not the weird jelly soul cartoon people.
