For the most part, Marvel Studios has maintained a high level of quality over the years, but some movies are obviously better regarded than others. Despite this, no MCU entry had dipped to "Rotten" status on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes... until Eternals.

At 47%, the divisive superhero adventure is the first MCU film to earn that dreaded green splat, officially making it the lowest-ranked movie in the franchise.

Earlier today, Rotten Tomatoes sent out a Tweet asking if Eternals really deserves to be ranked at the bottom of the MCU, and director Chloé Zhao shared the post to her Instagram stories while asking fans to weigh in on the debate ahead of the film's Disney+ release on January 12.

It can't be a nice feeling when your movie earns such a dubious honor, but the filmmaker appears to be taking Eternals' mixed reception in her stride.

Marvel Studios’ Eternals follows a group of heroes from beyond the stars who had protected the Earth since the dawn of man. When monstrous creatures called the Deviants, long thought lost to history, mysteriously return, the Eternals are forced to reunite in order to defend humanity once again.

The outstanding ensemble cast includes Gemma Chan as humankind-loving Sersi, Richard Madden as the all-powerful Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as cosmic-powered Kingo, Lia McHugh as the eternally young, old-soul Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as the intelligent inventor Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as the super-fast Makkari, Barry Keoghan as aloof loner Druig, Don Lee as the powerful Gilgamesh, with Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, with Salma Hayek as the wise and spiritual leader Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as the fierce warrior Thena.

Yes it does deserve to be the lowest.

Or at least among the lowest. It was borderline unwatchable.

@TopBoy - unwatchable? Lmao you sound like you just hate anything.

@TopBoy - Absolutely ridiculous take. I have seen unwatchable movies, I have turned unwatchable movies off. I've wished I had have walked out of unwatchable movies in the cinema after buying my ticket only staying on principal I paid.

It might not be on the levels people wanted or expected but it's no worse than the likes of Ant-Man, Thor TDW, Iron Man 3, Doctor Strange etc.

Takes 3rd spot for me of the 4 MCU movies released this year.

@TopBoy - everyone gonna loose their sh!t when I ask this but do you consider Justice League and Suicide Squad watchable and this average movie unwatchable???
TopBoy
TopBoy - 1/3/2022, 7:56 PM
@Marveladdict - Justice League and Suicide Squad were awful films. Unless you’re talking about the recent SS movie.

@TopBoy - point proven. I was talking about the recent SS movie. Are you also into snuff films?

Comicmoviejunki - 1/3/2022, 10:45 PM
@TopBoy - me personally I turned the recent SS squad off after the 612th F bomb and 46th bloody murder. 2nd viewing I forced the rest of the movie in disgust.

@Marveladdict - I'm far from a prude when it comes to swearing and violence in movies. But you're so right about TSS. It felt like a snuff film. Like James Gunn was getting sick thrills from the callous and cruel violence. It was a horrible and disgusting experience.

Like an angry school-boy's sadistic, serial-killer sexual fantasy.

@GwenLantern - Will you marry me? No seriously. Out of all my friends and family members, and sickos on this site you are the only person that has agreed with me. AND you described it perfectly. I think I'm in love. I hope you're a girl Gwen, if not I'm into dudes 🤷🏽

@Marveladdict - I might be too old for you, lol.
Glad somebody agrees. I mean there must be more of us out there. The movie didn't do well and I know they released it on HBO Max at the same time, but I'm sure one of the big reasons was that it didn't connect with people.
And Peacemaker didn't seem to garner much interest when it was first promoted at Fandome.

We are not alone.

@GwenLantern - I doubt that. I'm 45. The fact that the movie didn't do well doesn't restore my faith in humanity sadly.

No. It is far from the worst even though I didn’t like it. It was at least trying to do something interesting. The same cannot be said for the actual worst entries of Iron Man 2 and Captain Marvel.

@MrDandy - Far from the worst but YOU don't like it. What was the worst? Why do we accept ideas that we call bad for being different? I don't think black eyed peas and lemons on a jelly sandwhich would taste good. Should I give it credit for being different? Make it make sense.
Gizmoduck

@VictorAlonzo - there is being different and being bad, i havenot seen this film yet, my brother has and told me i would love it as im a lore nerd and would dig the exposition. He disliked shang chi as the ending is a chi dragon fight and not what he was going in to see. Some wont like exposition, some wont like CGI fests, thats fine, doesnt make either bad. What does make a movie bad is half ass plot points, poor writing, flat characters and villains that make 0 sense. IM3 for instance is unequivocally bad. it takes a bit everything that makes films bad and jams it into one film. bad writing check, pointless villain double check, flat characters - especially the lead, and less than half ass plot points. The list goes on and on with that stinker of a film.

IM2, while having poor writing at least had a decent villain in Justin Hammer and Whiplash. The entire - im being poisoned thing and need to make a new element was stupid but can be salvaged with some acting chops of downey and rockwell who were fantastic in it. While its not great, its not the worst.

Cpt Marvel - just stunk - i fall asleep anytime i try and watch it - it has some good parts but it was a haphazard tranlation of the material and worse for it. i could write more but i think u get my point.

@Gizmoduck - thanks for explaining. You officially made it make sense. 😃

@Gizmoduck - Your post is a perfect example of the difference between people in what they like and dislike.

You liked Hammer. I found him pretty close to offensive at times which soured his whole performance for me.

You hated Carol Danvers, I liked her snark. Note that's aside from the actresses public speaking miscues. The later should not be considered as far as her character is concerned.

I hate to say but it sometimes you are better not having preconceptions about the material based on the comics. Head canon has a way of getting in the way. As always YMMV.

I haven't seen Eternals yet but Captain Marvel is the worst one to me by a landslide.
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 1/3/2022, 5:00 PM
@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - maybe not the worst, but definitely amongst the more boring one. Same with Thor the Dark Thor movie
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 1/3/2022, 5:06 PM
@bkmeijer - agreed. Worst 3, but I add black Widow to that list. I like Eternals but lowest is according to a consensus so yeah it deserves it.
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 1/3/2022, 5:51 PM
@TheWalkingCuban - I'm still mixed on Black Widow. It doesn't really have rewatch value, but I did like Yelena and Alexei. I think I'd put it above Incredible Hulk now, but that could easily change soon
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 1/3/2022, 5:54 PM
@bkmeijer - thanks for reminding me, they were great. I think her mid credit scene was the best of the year with the best pay off
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 1/3/2022, 5:59 PM
@TheWalkingCuban - true. Nice to see a set-up be paid off so quickly indeed, something we cannot always be sure of anymore with Marvel's packed schedule

TheWalkingCuban - 1/3/2022, 6:06 PM
@bkmeijer - yeah that was Def nice
Tasmaniac
Tasmaniac - 1/3/2022, 10:03 PM
@bkmeijer - Yeah, Black Widow would have to be near the worst, but I’d also have to rate Ant Man & The Wasp very close for just being so utterly forgettable. And for making an absolute balls up of Ghost.
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 1/4/2022, 3:39 AM
@Tasmaniac - I still like both Ant-Man movies a lot to be honest. Only reason I'm not ranking them high is that there are a ton of other MCU movies I enjoy I even more, but by no means do I think they're bad
Goldboink
Goldboink - 1/3/2022, 4:34 PM
For me it's the one that I just won't rewatch, along with IM3. IM2, which takes a lot of shite on this board, is a far better movie with far better performances. Bottom of my list for sure.
