Batman Begins introduced Carmine Falcone as the mob boss who Bruce Wayne faced and Falcone's own words were that which caused Wayne to disappear and eventually get training with the League of Shadows that would become the basis of Batman's training too.
Batman eventually captures Falcone in the first film and Falcone then goes crazy under Scarecrow's drugs.
In The Dark Knight, the Falcone empire is still functioning under the control of Sal Maroni (played by actor Eric Roberts), but then The Joker steps in and he makes a big mess of the underworld the mob controlled in Gotham.
With the news (according to MTV News) that actor Aaron Eckhart, who played Harvey Dent/Two Face, has been asked by director Christopher Nolan to reprise his role as Two Face in the third film the plot of Batman 3 may somewhat feed off of "The Long Halloween" storyline.
In "The Long Halloween," The Joker does play a big role in the events of the story and we all know according to The Dark Knight, The Joker will not be making an appearance in the third film. Also, Nolan does not follow down the same road as the original stories he used as influence for the first two films which were "Batman: Year One," and "The Killing Joke."
