"But I couldn't."
THE BANK OF GOTHAM
Black Mask looks on as his men stuff cash in sacks, and hold guns to hostages heads.
Black Mask: "Heh, heh. Hey boys! We got lucky! Batman hasn't shown up yet!"
Thug: "Uh, Mr. Mask? We can't get into the safe. We can't hack the security panel. I don't know the code."
Black Mask: "What? Where's the manager? The owner?"
Thug: "You...um. You killed them."
Black Mask: "Damn. Well, I was lucky enough to get some explosives from Oswald Cobblepot before he was incarcerated. Because of BATMAN! BATMAN!!!"
Thug: "Do you WANT him to come!?! Do you want to be knocked unconscious and wake up in a cell!?!"
Black Mask: "There's always a chance we can kill him."
Thug: "Remember when you worked with the Hood? Even with all those guys you couldn't bring him down! The Hood couldn't even kill him with a FIGHTER JET!!! ON HIS FIRST NIGHT!!! I'm going to die in here!"
Black Mask: "Shut up! He might not even be here. Stop panicking!"
He pulled out a gun and shot the thug. He dropped to the floor. Mask laughed. He walked towards the room with the safe. Every thug in the room was unconscious.
Black Mask: "Everyone, get in here! The safe room! Where are you? Huh?"
The thugs piled into the room, some with guns, some without.
Black Mask: "WHERE ARE YOU!?!?!?!"
Catwoman dropped from the ceiling.
Catwoman: "I suppose your talking about the man himself. Whatever. I get it."
Black Mask: "Oh, it's you. Kill her!"
The thugs with guns shot at her, but only after she had gotten to the other side of the room. She knocked out two thugs, and the bullets came back to her. Catwoman jumped to the ceiling and knocked them down with a batarang each. She jumped down at the thugs on the ground, and knocked them out, having her feet collide with their faces. More thugs came after her. She punched one in the face, grabbed another's arm, twisted it behind his back and slammed him into a wall. A third thug came after her, going for a punch. Catwoman grabbed the thugs arm, punched him in the face, and then kicked him in the crotch. He fell to the floor. Two more with guns shot at her. One bullet pierced her arm. She tossed another batarang. It hit one in the face, and he stumbled into the other thug. He pushed the dazed thug out of his way. In that period of time, Catwoman had jumped to the ceiling. The pushed thug got up, and realized that Catwoman was gone. They looked around the room. Nothing. They looked up at the ceiling. Nothing. Suddenly, their heads were rushing towards each other. They were both knocked out. Black Mask sighed.
Black Mask: "Looks like I have to kill you myself."
He pulled out a knife.
Catwoman: "Seriously? A knife. Honestly, why do you think that'll work?"
Mask ran at her, and swung the knife at her head. She easily dodged the move, and punched him. He staggered back, but retaliated by going for her head again, changing his move as she dodged, and stabbed her arm. Mask then kicked her legs, and Catwoman fell to the ground. He ripped the knife from her arm and swiped at her head. She dodged, and punched Mask in the face. She got up, and clutched his neck. He kicked her legs again and punched her. He picked up his knife from the ground and put it to her throat.
Black Mask: "No way to dodge this."
Catwoman: "Right. I can't dodge it."
A small explosion took place on Mask's back. She had planted a device there earlier. He fell to the floor. Catwoman picked up the knife and shoved it in Mask's wrist. He screamed as his veins were popped by the cold steel. Catwoman expressed her sorrow by kicking him in the groin.
THE MONARCH THEATER
Firefighters are settling a blaze. Viki Vale is reporting on the scene.
Viki Vale: "And the latest story, the destruction of the Monarch Theater. Noone knows how or when the fire started, only that it was sometime between 8 and 10. Two people perished in the fire. Many came out unscathed, but no one was more badly hurt than Garfield Lynns. A former criminal and pyrotechnist company CEO, excuse the irony, Lynns was badly burnt and scarred over more than 90% of his body. Doctors are saying that, 'He will always have the scars, but also the burns. His hair will never grow back, and the small amount of flesh left will most likely be decreased into nothingness in about 6 months. The Theater is infamous for being the location of Thomas and Martha Wayne's death 3 decades ago. Surprisingly, the theater was not shut down, but lost most of it's business. The building had become run down, and was nearing conviction. This was meant to be the last showing of a movie in the theater. It certainly was. This is Viki Vale reporting to you live from lower Gotham."
THE BATCAVE
Batman is studying a set of crime scenes on the Batcomputer with Alfred.
Batman: "5 robberies. 3 at jewelry stores, 1 at the hospital, and another at GothCorp. What connections do the buildings have?"
Alfred: "Perhaps it is not where, but what?"
Batman: "Medical supplies, certain power tools and blowtorches, along with... only the diamonds? That's strange. Only diamonds. Medical supplies for a sick loved one? Power tools... to sell. Diamonds. Definitely going to sell them."
Alfred: "Or perhaps they are gimmicks. A terrible trio, perhaps? The Doctor, The Jewel Thief, and the Construction Worker. Perfect."
Batman: "Hilarious. Maybe. I'll look into it."
Catwoman: "I'm back!"
Batman: "Hi Selina. What took you so long?"
Catwoman: "Our old friend Roman Sionis robbed a bank."
Batman: "A bank? That's beneath him."
Alfred: "Um, Master Bruce, now may not be the best time to say this, but you need to get out of this cave. Do whatever it is a billionaire playboy bachelor does."
Batman: "Fine. There is something I've been meaning to do. Selina, remember John Grayson?"
Catwoman: "From the party. Yeah."
Batman: "The circus is in town."
THE ABRAMVOMCI CIRCUS: THE BIG TOP
The Graysons are preparing for their act. The ringmaster walks in, Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle behind him.
Ringmaster: "Mr. Wayne wanted to see you John. He said he was an old friend. Um, I'll be going then."
John Grayson: "Bruce? That's you, huh? I haven't seen you since, well, the turn of the millennia!"
Bruce: "Hey John. It's great to see you too. Hello Alice. And Dick. I haven't seen you since You were 2! How old are you? 12?"
Dick Grayson: "I am. 13 in June."
Bruce: "Congratulations in advance. John, this is Selina."
Selina: "It's nice to meet you. I'm an old friend of Bruce's too. Known him since I was 5."
John: "Then you beat me. I met him when I was 7. Where's Harvey?"
Bruce: "Oh. He...couldn't make it. You know, putting criminals in jail and all."
John: "Oh, okay. It was nice seeing you Bruce, but I don't want you to see the act again until everyone else does."
Bruce: "And I won't. It was nice seeing you again John."
John: "You too Bruce. Bye."
Bruce: "Bye."
Him and Selina left the tent.
The show had started. All the acts had finished, exempt for the main event. The Flying Graysons. John and his family climbed to the top of the pole, to the platform. John went first. He jumped off the platform and grabbed onto a trapeze. He let go mid-swing, only to have his wife, Alice, grab onto his hands and wrap around the trapeze with her legs. They came back to the platform, where Dick still stood. He jumped, and grabbed his fathers ankles. They came to the second platform, where they all jumped off. When the trapeze came back, John grabbed onto it, waited until it came back to the occupied platform, and Alice and Dick grabbed onto an ankle of John's. The two held each others free hand, and jumped to the other platform, still holding each other. The net was then removed. Dick stayed on the platform. Alice and John grabbed onto separate trapezes, and alternated between them mid-swing. Then, two men came in. They were in trench coats. Bruce recognized one of them. Deadshot. He took off the trench coat. He pointed his wrist gun up.
BANG!!!
Two bullets were fired. Four ropes were cut. Two Graysons were dead. One was left. Crying. Alone.
The police arrived. Gordon was there. He was comforting Dick. Bruce was there too. He was with Dick. Gordon left Dick.
Gordon: "This kid is all alone. We can't find any family still alive. No aunts, uncles, grandparents. No one."
Bruce walked over.
Bruce: "I'll take him in. John was a close friend. I'll do it."
THE BATCAVE
Bruce is on the Batcomputer. Alfred is with him.
Bruce: "Two of my friends are dead Alfred. This is what happens when I do something 'fun'. Someone close to me DIES! No more going out ever. I could have saved them, I could have helped! But I didn't. Like I couldn't help Harvey. Like I couldn't help my parents. Who's next? You? Selina? Me? Not to mention more robberies at the same places. Damn it, why!?!"
Alfred: "Master Bruce, do not blame yourself. Why are you Batman? You say that it was because you failed to help them in their time of need. I say that it was because you rallied that this city needed a savior, and that the law wouldn't be able to help. You realized that, when nobody else did. Things happen for a reason. Maybe John died so Master Dick would come to you."
Bruce: "Honestly? I don't believe in fate."
Alfred: "Not fate. Something else."
