“Who are you?”
“We had a meeting.”
“Who are you?”
“My name is Amanda Nelson. I work for Lazarus Enterprises.
WAYNE MANOR
Bruce walks past Alfred.
Alfred: “Ah, Master Bruce. It’s good that you’re here. I’ve made arrangements for the funeral.”
Bruce: “Not now.”
Alfred: “Mr. Strange called. He asked for you.”
Bruce: “Not now.”
Alfred: “I know it is difficult. But there was nothing you could do.”
Bruce: “Like everyone else. I couldn’t save my parents. I couldn’t save Harvey, I couldn’t save Dick. I couldn’t even save a woman in a block of ice!”
Alfred: “Do not blame yourself.”
Bruce: “Then who should I?”
He continued to walk.
THE BATCAVE
Bruce stares at Robin’s suit, stored within a glass cylinder.
BLACKGATE
Edward Nygma is writing math problems on the wall with a permanent marker. He hears footsteps.
Eddie walks to the cell door.
“I’d like to see you. I’ve been given permission.”
Eddie: “Who are you?”
“A very curious man. I want to know everything you do about the Batman.”
Eddie smiles.
Deadshot throws a ball at a target drawn on the wall. It hits the bullseye. Someone knocks on the cell door.
Deadshot: “What do you want?”
“The Batman. What do you know?”
Oswald Cobblepott stares at the cell door. He hears a knock.
Cobblepott: What do you want? I’m not hungry.”
“I want information. Tell me? What do you know of the Batman?”
ARKHAM ASYLUM
Clayface paces back and forth, in a cell with a clear wall.
He changes his shape when he gets to one end of the cell. we see two feet at the cell.
Clayface: “Who are you?”
“Someone who wants information. About the Batman.”
Clayface: “You want the rest of the League?”
“No.”
AN UNNAMED LOCATION
Amanda walks into a dark room.
Amanda: “Wayne has agreed to meet with you.”
“Good.”
Amanda: “Is that all?”
...
The Next Day
WAYNE ENTERPRISES
Bruce sits at his desk. Amanda Nelson walks into his office.
Amanda: “Hello.”
Bruce: “Yes?”
Amanda: “So, are we going to go into detail about the meeting?”
Bruce: “You’re taking a lot of precaution.”
Amanda: “Really? Now then, my employer wants to speak with you. It’s a very rare occasion. You’re lucky.”
Bruce: “Are you sure?”
Amanda: “He’s ready.”
Bruce: “Tomorrow?”
Amanda: “Now. He’s outside.”
Bruce: “You could have told me.”
Amanda: “I just did.”
Bruce: “Send him in.”
She walked out. Seconds later, a middle-aged, bearded man walks in.
Bruce: “Hello.”
Amanda: “This is my employer, Mr. Jason Adams.”
Bruce: “It’s a pleasure.”
Jason: “I can tell.”
Bruce: “So, why are you talking to me, right now?”
Jason: “Well, Lazarus Enterprises is a small company. Of course, we have resources that no one else does. We could change the world. With your geniuses and money, along with our resources, we can change the world.”
Amanda: “He’s already found a resource that can change the world forever.”
Bruce: “And that is?”
Jason: “That, is where the company’s name comes from.”
Bruce: “Lazarus?”
Jason: “Yes. It can change the world. It can save humanity from itself.”
Bruce: “How?”
Jason: “The ones who help us, the geniuses, the innovators, the saviors. They can stay with us, while the rest die out.”
Bruce: “What do you mean?”
Jason: “Immortality, Mr. Wayne. Lazarus rejuvenates the body. It is the key to health. To saving the human race.”
Bruce: “And I’m supposed to believe this?”
Jason: “Mr. Wayne, you have to.”
Bruce: “I don’t have time for this.”
Jason: “I had a feeling you would not.”
He pulls a small vial from within his suit. It’s full of bubbly green liquid.
Jason: “This is Lazarus. You are one of the few, Mr. Wayne. The few that can help us.”
Bruce: “Just you and Amanda?”
Jason pulls out another vial, with a dead fly inside.
Bruce: “You’re giving me a demonstration?”
Amanda: “He’s showing you what can be accomplished.”
Jason opens both vials, and drops the fly into the liquid.
Bruce: “And?”
Seconds later, the insect flies out of the vial.
Bruce: “What the hell?”
Jason: “This is what I have discovered. I want to help you Mr. Wayne. To recruit you.”
Bruce: “What? Look, I’m amazed at Lazarus, but no.”
Jason: “Then you have seen too much. Watch yourself, Mr. Wayne.”
Amanda: “At all times.”
They walk out of the room.
Bruce: “What the hell just happened?”
Hugo Strange is in his office, furiously writing notes, and reviewing old ones. A close up of one of his papers reveals the Bat-symbol on top of a giant ‘W’.
THE BATCAVE
Bruce looks over articles with anything to do about Lazarus on the Batcomputer.
He also searches for Jason Adams, but with no luck. Alfred walks to the Batcomputer.
Alfred: “You never told me what happened at the meeting.”
Bruce: “They had a chemical. Natural, as far as I know. It brought something...back from the dead. It’s insane, I know, but I’m not ruling anything out.”
Alfred: “What did she say?”
Bruce: “Her employer said that I was one of the few. One of the chosen, or something.”
Alfred: “He was thinking about bringing you back, then waiting, then again?”
Bruce: “I’m not sure. Not exactly. It’s insane. I saw it Alfred. He’s not lying.”
Alfred: “Then what does he plan to do?”
Bruce: “That’s what I’m trying to figure out.”
AN UNNAMED LOCATION
Jason and Amanda walk through a dimly lit hall.
Amanda: “When do we kill him?’
Jason: “We don’t.”
Amanda: “What? Father-”
Jason: “Do not call me that Talia!”
Talia: “I am sorry.”
THE BATCAVE
Bruce: “I couldn’t find any Jason Adams’.”
Alfred: “Then it was a false name.”
Bruce: “Right. Who’s to say he didn’t use the chemical on himself?”
Alfred: “What were his patterns of speech?”
Bruce: “He didn’t use any words with apostrophes. He seemed to repeat things at times. Not sure.”
Alfred: “That would mean...almost 600 years.”
Bruce: “How’d you get that?”
Alfred: “I know history.”
Bruce: “So what do we do? Wait? It seems like the best plan. We can’t find him. Wait a minute. No, we can.”
Alfred: “And how can we, exactly, Master Bruce?”
Bruce: “He said he’ll kill me. This isn’t a man who bluffs, as far as I know.”
Alfred: Then we wait for an attempt on your life to find a man who can come back from the dead. Brilliant.”
GOTHAM CITY
Hugo Strange looks over more paperwork. He smiles.
Strange picks up a cell phone.
WAYNE MANOR
A phone is ringing.
‘Please leave a message at the sound of the beep.’ -beep-
Strange: “The secret’s out Mr. Wayne.”
The Next Day
Bruce is sitting on a large couch, watching the news.
Vale: “Metropolis is being rebuilt, after the attempted destruction. Also, our own Commissioner Gordon is still comatose. In other news, Richard ‘Dick’ Grayson was reported dead three days ago. Adopted by millionaire Bruce Wayne, Grayson was-”
He turned the TV off. Bruce sat back.
Alfred checked the messages on a phone. He found one.
Strange: -“The secret’s out Mr. Wayne.”-
Alfred: “Oh no. Master Bruce!”
Bruce runs to Alfred.
Alfred: “Mr. Strange called.”
He plays the message.
Bruce: “So...he knows?”
Alfred: ...
Bruce: “I’ll talk to him.”
WAYNE ENTERPRISES
Bruce walks into Strange’s office.
Bruce: “Hi.”
Strange: “Hello Mr. Wayne.”
Bruce: “So I’m Mr. Wayne now?”
Strange: “You got my message.”
Bruce: “Why wouldn't I?”
Strange: “You’ve always been a hobby of mine. I’ve known for a long time. I just chose now to reveal it.”
Bruce: “Why?”
Strange: “Do you know what it’s like? Of course you don’t. To be the Batman. But only mentally. Not physically. And knowing that you never could be the Batman physically. It’s enough to drive a man insane. But I’m not insane.”
Bruce: “Why are you telling me now?”
Strange: “Because you are at your weakest. You can be beaten.”
Bruce: “How?”
Strange: “How did I find out? It was simple. Your butler. The morning after your parents died, I came to visit. Alfred told me that you were talking about training, and revenge. When the Batman came, and against Rupert Thorne, I simply put the pieces together.”
Bruce: “How did you know about Thorne?”
Strange: “You aren’t ready for that. Did you know that your friend, Harvey Dent, was it? Well, I gave him a phone call the night he ‘became’ Two-Face. I said, ‘Run Dent. The cops are coming. Or will you stay? Heads or tails.’.”
Bruce: “You influenced him. Made him...that thing.”
Strange: “I tried to break you. Mentally. Of course, I had to resort to physically.”
Bruce: “What?”
Strange: “I’m not going to tell anyone, Batman. Don’t worry. Talk to me tomorrow. At my house. In costume. Thanks.”
Bruce: “I never agreed!”
WAYNE MANOR
Alfred greets Bruce at the door.
Alfred: “I just remembered sir, your birthday is tomorrow.”
Bruce: “Okay. Invite as many people as possible, and stall them. I need to talk to Strange tomorrow. Okay?”
Alfred: “I don’t believe that’s what we should do.”
Bruce: “Than invite Strange.”
Alfred: “But didn’t he-”
Bruce: “He said he wouldn’t tell anyone.”
Alfred: “You still trust him?”
Bruce: “I’ve known the man my whole life. He’s never lied to me. Kept secrets, yes, but no lies. Okay? Thanks.”
Alfred: “I’ll start making calls.
Bruce: “Thanks again!”
