Each Green Lantern wields a power ring that can generate a variety of effects, sustained purely by the ring wearer's imagination and strength of will. The greater the user's willpower, the more effective the ring. The upper limits of the power ring's abilities remain undefined, and it has been referred to as "the most powerful weapon in the universe" on more than one occasion. It has also been stated that every weapon has a weakness and the weakness a Green Lantern ring has is its wearer (though some argue that this is its strength). Across the years, the rings have been shown capable of accomplishing almost anything within the imagination of the ring bearer. Stories in 2006 retconned the ring's long-established ineffectiveness on yellow objects, stating that the ring-wielder need only feel fear, understand it and overcome it in order to affect yellow objects (however, it is a learned and practiced ability, making it a weakness to some Green Lanterns), giving retroactive credence to the explanation of the ring's real but surmountable weakness to yellow.

Power rings as used by various wielders have exhibited (but are not limited to) the following effects:
-Constructs of green 'solid-energy,' which can vary from microscopic to tremendous in size and/or complexity and are limited by the imagination of the ring's wielder. This can be used to attack, defend, or to grab targets (Pre-Crisis, the rings generated telekinectic skills without constructs, if needed).
Force field generation, a someone protective aura (limited by user's willpower) used to shield the wearer from the rigors of the vacuum of space. This provides a breathable atmosphere for the user as well. Contrary to older canon, a Green Lantern ring currently does not automatically protect its wearer from harm but must be willed into existence (previously, an unconscious wielder generated a protective force field automatically).
-Generation of mental "earplugs" to block out telepathic communication and manipulation.
-Rendering targets invisible.
-Lights and beams of various intensity and colors, such as destructive plasma and harmless multicolored lights.

Movement capabilities:
-Flight, including flight at speeds beyond that of light, although this creates an enormous expenditure of energy.
-Relatively instantaneous transport across the galaxy and other distances through generated wormholes.
-Teleportation (an ability that has not been used in quite some time and may be outside the ability of modern Green Lanterns)
-Pre-Crisis, the rings allowed for travel faster than the speed of light.
-Time travel, though several power rings are needed to complete this.

The rings can act as semi-sentient computers and accesses information through its connection with the Book of Oa; the rings have problem-solving skills but they cannot make decisions or take actions on their own, and must be given directives by the wearer:
-Translation of nearly all languages (originally, this was accomplished by using willpower, but this has changed in the modern era to be a function of the rings themselves.
-Communication between ringwielders, regardless of distance apart.
-Diagnostic capabilities, allowing the user to see in X-Ray, contemplate illness, and identify materials.

Mental powers of various stages:
-Telepathy
-Hypnosis, including projecting the target's thoughts onto constructed maps.
-Creation and emission of certain types of radiation, including simulated wavelengths, such as kryptonite.
-Placing humans into a state of suspended animation and pulling them out of it.

Changing the state of targeted matter and the wearer:
-Allowing targets and the wearer to phase through solid objects
-Rendering the wearer and targets to become invisible
-Accelerated healing of wounds, protection and treatment from viruses and biological attacks and certain surgical procedures including reattachment of severed limbs and digits. More advanced medical procedures may be performed manually and are limited by the wearer's knowledge of medicine. Pre-Crisis, a wearer could instantaneously reinvigorate limbs that hadn't been used in years, so someone bedridden for years could walk as though their muscles were not atrophied.
-Virtual shape-shifting by generating a hard-light holographic disguise around the ring bearer.
-"Digitizing" the wearer to absorb them into the ring where they can live in a wearer-generated "world" of their own nearly indefinitely.
-Pre-Crisis, a ring could alter a being's molecular size (including shrinking to an atomic level), evolutionary stage (such as turning a target human into an ape), or distort specific targeted areas of the body (slowing the Flash down by making his upper torso too large for him to run).
-Pre-Crisis, a wearer could animate non-living matter and make the target do whatever is willed.
-Pre-Crisis, the rings could create a construct of a ring that a "non-Lantern" could use for 4 hours at a time (as opposed to 24) without a great effort of will.
-Pre-Crisis, a ring could create multiple copies of it's wearer if certain conditions were met; each copy had the capabilities of the original wearer.
In Green Lantern: First Flight Sinestro was able to "reconnect synapses" in the brain of a dead criminal in order to extract information via a kind of guided discussion.

Silver Surfer,Stardust,Terrax and Firelord

The Power Cosmic is a fictional term from the comic book world of the Marvel Universe, being used to name a power primarily wielded by the god-like cosmic entity Galactus. The Power Cosmic allows Galactus to employ the available absorbed cosmic energies within him to produce nearly any effect he desires, including size-alteration, the molecular restructuring and transmutation of matter, the teleportation of objects—even entire galaxies—across space and time, the creation of force fields, the creation of interdimensional portals, telepathy, telekinesis, and cosmic awareness on a universal scale. Galactus has even been shown as capable of creating sentient life, resurrecting the dead, manipulating mortal souls and remaking dead worlds—including their populations—in every detail.

The Silver Surfer, as well as most of the Heralds of Galactus, possess certain measures of the Power Cosmic. Bestowed on them by Galactus during their service to him, their abilities and assigned elements of influence vary, but the power can usually be expelled violently as concussive force, and sometimes, among other things, used with precision as a means to restructure molecules according to the user's mental design. However, heralds are imbued with only a fraction of the amount possessed by Galactus, and the latter has repeatedly been shown able to strip them of the power he has afforded them.

SILVER SURFER has the ability to absorb and tap ambient cosmic energy into his body at will, and expel those energies violently, or in more subtle ways. He can channel beams of energy through his hands with sufficient destructive force to destroy a planet, or wield the energies with such finesse as to restructure the molecules of the natural dyes within a plant to change its color. The Surfer can rearrange matter to create other configurations and can even transmute elements (such as turning a steel napkin holder into solid gold or tons of rock into harmless gas). Other uses of the Power Cosmic have included the ability to phase through objects; accelerate the evolution of life forms (even on a planet wide scale); see the past by peeling back the layers of time; time travel; trans-dimensional travel; the manipulation, absorption and discharge of any form of energy or radiation; and, granting limited cosmic powers to others. The Silver Surfer also posses the ability to negate or suppress the powers of other mutants/beings making them temporarily (potentially permanently) unable to use them. The Power Cosmic allows Silver Surfer to teleport through hyperspace; the distances he can teleport is almost limitless. The Silver Surfer has full mental and physical control over his Power Cosmic, which is why it cannot be taken by siphoning mutants.

STARDUST is a Herald of Galactus imbued with the Power Cosmic and as such possesses high levels of superhuman strength, durability, reflexes, and stamina to confront and match powerhouses such as Beta Ray Bill as well as the other standard abilities of a Herald, such as creating a black hole or opening inter-dimensional portals.Stardust is an Ethereal, a race of beings of pure energy. Being imbued with the Power Cosmic makes Stardust immortal, allowing him to reconstitute himself if "destroyed", such as during the Annihilation Wave or having its physical structure dispersed

TERRAX is an alien with a genetic mutation that gives him a limited mental ability to manipulate the molecules of rock and earth. After being transformed by the cosmic power of Galactus, the character can perform feats as fine as manipulating sand and as grand as causing volcanic eruptions and moving asteroids; meteors, and planetary masses from space at high speeds; shift tectonic plates to cause earthquakes and create chasms, and levitate large land masses miles into the air. Like all Heralds, Terrax possesses superhuman strength, stamina, reflexes and durability; energy projection; force fields; warp speed and is immune to the rigors of space. The character further possesses a cosmic scythe which he sometimes directs his energy attacks through.

FIRELORD was given mastery over the cosmic flame, Firelord wields a flaming staff and is capable of energy projection via his eyes and staff. Like all Heralds, the Power Cosmic provides Firelord with superhuman strength, reflexes and durability, flight, mastery of the electromagnetic spectrum and total immunity to the rigors of space. Firelord is also capable of travelling faster than the speed of light.Firlord graduated from the Xandarian Nova Corps Academy, and in addition to a thorough knowledge of combat has knowledge of advanced alien technology and space navigation.

I'd have to say the Heralds of Galactus. There are actually a whole lot more than just the ones mentioned, but they all have the power cosmic. I think that trumps the GL's any day.

CorndogBurglar - 12/28/2010, 9:46 AM
In fact, Silver Surfer could probably handle them on his own. lol

The Heralds of Galactus would destroy the Lantern Corps. Theyre just too powerful compared to the Corps. Plus add in the fact that the Silver Surfer himself can absorb energy from the rings and render them powerless, he can pretty much handle them by himself.

Heralds FTW

This is a very good pool though.

@Intruder: PS. Maybe you should get more in-depth with the Heralds powers. Just a thought

Heralds would win. By far. In fact I'd feel bad for the Green Lanterns....just cause they'd get their a$$ kicked so hard :) Hahahaha

I think a better fight would be the GL Corps vs the Nova Corps....?

Great Poll Intruder! I'd have to go with the Heralds on this one. Their energy manipulation and absortion powers are way too much for the Corps.

I would say you're welcome Intruder but I didn't do anything. I've been out for the last couple of hours. I would guess with this being on main, it was Galactus himself that did the straightening. ;P

That would be a very interesting battle, but yeah I have to say that the combined might of those particular Heralds would definitely defeat the Corp.

nice poll for the coming new year, man!!!
this one definitely goes with a bang!!!
(the poll itself & the battle itself altogether!!!)

@LEE
SERIOUSLY? REALLY?

@DaDeaDman
this poll is not about good vs. evil, its about who would win in an all-out battle between them contenders... and the results are just plain obvious...
The Green Lantern Corps would bite the dust brought to them by the Heralds of the mighty...
GALACTUS!!!!

Im gonna be the only one who says this but GL wins...It will be a CLOSE but there are thousands upon thousands of GL members, the Council themselves and the giant center power battery. The ring is the most powerful object in the universe and like the description says is only limited by the willpower and imagination of its' wearer.

So theoretically a GL member could do ANYTHING. If a GL member has the willpower or many GLs concentrate on a single task then they could crush, kill, or render non-existant even the Heralds of Galactus and Galactus himself. It would be hard as hell but with thousands of GL members I think they would do it.

I think everything would get destroyed by the fight. All the corps vs a few of the Herald? Pretty sweet fight, but the corps would be losing (if it were just the big name four human lanterns), but if the rest of them, the 7 thousand something showed up, they would be too much for even Silver Surfer, no matter how awesome he is, you can't cover that many angles, and one of the Green Lantern's would get through, at least one, if not hundreds. There would just be too many for him to handle, and even the rest of the Herald would get overwhelmed against all of Corps. Not to mention, other factions would probably join in, like the Sinestro Corps or whoever else, who want to keep Galactus from destroying their homeworlds. The enemy of your enemy is your friend. There'd be all sorts of of Lanterns fighting against the Herald. (Unless for some unforeseen plot twist lol).

@Gaston: I wouldnt say that the heralds are pretty much invincible. Spider-Man kicked Firelord's ass before.......
and thats not even the Symbiote costume.
SageMode
SageMode - 12/28/2010, 10:30 PM
@ShadowVoyd: I know that the Green Lantern Corps is more popular, but I think as long as they have Richard Rider on their team, the Nova Corps would win. He just too powerful nowadays. He's even fought the Silver Surfer to a stalemate, and that's pretty impressive. not only that, he has the power of the entire Nova Corps.
bigstu62
bigstu62 - 12/28/2010, 11:14 PM
There is no chance for the GL Corps. The combined power of the Heralds would be too much for them to handle. As powerful as the rings and their batteries are someone said it best The Surfer alone could drain them of their power. Plus some of the Heralds have no problem with killing opponents. Lanterns don't fight to the death as part of their code. Final verdict Galactus eats OA.
ScottScottScott
ScottScottScott - 12/29/2010, 3:35 AM
Everyone knows I'm a pretty hardcore DC guy and I love the GL Corp I really really do, but yeah... Power Cosmic = win. No questions asked. (However I think the fight may be not so one sided if we threw in a few Blue lanterns as well.)

Winners IMO Heralds.
SageMode
SageMode - 12/29/2010, 7:07 AM
@Allpurposenaji: I think that fight would go to Kyle Rayner if he was Ion. With the powers of the Guardians, Ion, the Starheart, and the central power battery, that's crazy power right there.
MoonDoggyX
MoonDoggyX - 12/29/2010, 11:25 AM
On paper, it pretty much boils down to: Can do anything...(Heralds), and Can do anything if we concentrate hard enough...(GL Corps). That fight would easily go to the heralds. Even if they were equal strength(which they're not nearly. If Galactus can move GALAXIES, a tiny fraction of that power, which each herald is supposed to possess, is more powerful than the whole corps and the Guardians put together!), the lanters have to really concentrate to pull off what the heralds can just "do". They just wouldn't be able to keep up.

With that said, though the Harolds are WAY more powerful, the corps would win every time. No, these 4 lanterns couldn't hold a candle to the 4 Heralds, but Galactus and his heralds have lost to the Fantastic 4! Any 1 lantern is stronger than them put together! :-)

Yeah, that was Tom Kalamaku, who supposedly has less will power than Hal, and he recreated Oa in all it's splendor and technology. Conclusion: GREEN LANTERNS WIN!
