Snyder confirms Viggo’s out, but no comments on Daniel Day-Lewis. We all know Daniel Day can kill it as a villain. He can drink that milkshake and, sure, he does sort of resemble part of that three villainous European looking team in Superman 2. Whether it is Lex Luthor or Zod or who ever, he would be a great villain, a great actor to have in The Man of Steel.
He also has another thing going for him for a different role—he looks like Superman. (And he looks like the British guy playing Superman). So why not replace a great actor with a great actor, Brando with Lewis. It may be fitting for Daniel Day to have a smaller role, a classy role, that of Superman’s father who sends him off to earth and also teaches him his roots in holographic form. Originally played by iconic Marlon Brando (this movie will not bring Brando back to life like Superman Returns) Daniel Day is one of a few actors who could appropriately fill those shoes. Although Snyder is not showing reverence to past Superman films, a nod to Brando could be appropriate (especially because Snyder was quite disgusted by Brando’s return to film in Superman Returns)
But with Viggo out, and if Daniel is in, it might be a waste to not get Daniel Day to be the bad guy—he is as evil and as talented as a villain can be. But, if a busy schedule is in his way, the role of Superman’s birth father would be perfect.
