DC Cinematic Universe Fancast: Various Supporting Characters

In the latest installment of my DC Cinematic Universe fancast, I cast various supporting characters in DC Comics, ranging from love interests to other allies.

Hey all,

A bit delayed (I've been very busy recently), but I've finally gotten around to posting the latest installment of my larger than usual DC Cinematic Universe fancast. In this section, I include various supporting characters from the DC Comics mythologies, including love interests (such as Iris West and Lois Lane) and other allies (such as Mera and Jim Gordon). The next installment of this cast will be the final one, and will cover numerous villains of DC heroes.

Lois Lane, Perry White & Amanda Waller - Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne
(Man Of Steel), Angela Bassett (Green Lantern)

Adams and Fishburne will play Lane and White, respectively, in next year's Man Of Steel, while Angela Bassett portrayed Amanda Waller in last summer's Green Lantern. Bassett did a decent job playing her character, and despite the fact that her role was virtually pointless to Green Lantern's overall story, I wouldn't mind seeing the actress reprise in a future DC movie for continuity's sake. Adams and Fishburne may seem like unusual choices for their characters, but I'm not worried. Adams is one of my favorite actresses, and I think she'll do a great job as Lois Lane. Same with Fishburne. I think it'd make sense to include one or both characters in a Justice League movie, though their roles would probably be small.

Others I Considered: None

Steve Trevor - Ryan Gosling
(Drive)

It would make perfect sense to introduce Trevor in a Wonder Woman movie (especially if said movie would follow the 2009 animated film's storyline) if the character isn't featured in 2015's Justice League. However, with Gangster Squad writer Will Beall scripting the superhero ensemble, I wouldn't be too surprised if there's interest in casting Gosling (who stars in the period action film) as a DC superhero. However, despite being frequently fancast for roles such as Batman, Flash and Aquaman, I think he would be an excellent Steve Trevor. Gosling is one of the hottest actors coming out of Hollywood right now, and it won't be too long before he ends up being in a CBM (especially since he has experience with action scenes with films such as Drive and the aforementioned Gangster Squad).

Others I Considered: Nathan Fillion, Chris Pine

Alfred Pennyworth - Sean Connery
(Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade)

Despite retiring from acting for a few years, I can't think of a better actor to portray Batman's trusted butler. Connery is basically a veteran of the action genre, having played James Bond and Indiana Jones' dad in the past. Like Lois Lane and Perry White, I would like to see Alfred have a small-ish role in a Justice League movie. Plus, it would be awesome to see Connery have a part in a comic book movie that isn't called League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Others I Considered: Ben Kingsley, Anthony Hopkins

Jimmy Olsen - Jamie Bell
(The Adventures Of Tintin)

Olsen is a rather important character in the Superman mythos, so it would be unusual not to see him appear in the Daily Planet during a Superman film. As for who should play him, I think Jamie Bell is the best choice. Bell is one of the better young actors in Hollywood these days, turning in solid performances in films such as Peter Jackson's King Kong and Steven Spielberg's The Adventures Of Tintin. He would do a good job playing Jimmy Olsen.

Others I Considered: Michael Cera, Jesse Eisenberg

Queen Hippolyta - Angelina Jolie
(Wanted)

One of the best things that Marvel Studios have done with some of their films was casting a lesser known actor in a lead role, and surrounding him with A-listers (for example, Chris Hemsworth was virtually unknown before Thor, and in that film, Natalie Portman was his girlfriend and Anthony Hopkins was his father). I would love to see DC make a similar approach to their movies (like with Man Of Steel). My pick for Wonder Woman, Gina Carano, isn't very well known at all. However, in a Wonder Woman movie, they can possibly surround Carano with A-list actors to generate more interest in the film, hence this casting, Angelina Jolie is no stranger to action films, and she's a pretty good actress when given the right script. She would be an interesting mother to Wonder Woman.

Others I Considered: Mary-Louise Parker, Lucy Lawless

Commissioner Jim Gordon - Dennis Quaid
(G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra)

Yes, I decided not to go with Bryan Cranston for this choice! While I'm convinced he would do a great job as the Gotham City commissioner, I wanted to be original here. Gordon is a rather difficult character to cast, especially since Gary Oldman did such a fantastic job in The Dark Knight Trilogy. After thinking of a few actors, I randomly thought of Dennis Quaid. Quaid is a solid actor, being one of the best actors in G.I. Joe: Rise Of Cobra. Just put a mustache on him, and I think he would be a very good choice to play Jim Gordon.

Others I Considered: Bill Nighy, William H. Macy, Bryan Cranston

Vicki Vale - Emily Blunt
(The Adjustment Bureau)

Blunt has been mentioned for several CBM roles, after being heavily considered to play Black Widow, being offered the Peggy Carter role in Captain America: The First Avenger, and currently being rumored for the Ms. Marvel role in The Avengers 2. However, I think she would be an excellent choice to play Batman love interest Vicki Vale. After having three love interests in the last trilogy (two of which were original characters), I think it's time for the Caped Crusader (or at least Bruce Wayne) be with Vicki Vale in the next Batman film series. Blunt is a very good actress, turning in solid performances in films such as Adjustment Bureau and Devil Wears Prada. She would be a welcome addition to any comic book movie.

Others I Considered: Christina Hendricks

Carol Ferris - Eva Mendes
(Ghost Rider)

Blake Lively played Ferris in the Green Lantern movie, and despite my usually wanting to keep actors for continuity's sake, I wouldn't mind recasting this character. Lively is a decent actress, but doesn't really fit the role of Carol Ferris. So I think they can get somebody else to play her when and if she appears in future DC movies (they can easily recast Bruce Banner and James Rhodes, so why not a smaller character like Carol Ferris?). Eva Mendes is a pretty good actress, being one of the only highlights in Ghost Rider. If they ever make a Green Lantern sequel, they should definitely replace Lively with Mendes.

Others I Considered: Eva Green

Iris West - Jessica Chastain
(The Help)

Despite being interested in playing a Marvel character and nearly playing one in Iron Man 3, I best see Jessica Chastain as Barry Allen's love interest, Iris West. Chastain is a good actress, being one of the best things in The Help and looking to steal the show in this year's Zero Dark Thirty. West is a key character in the Flash mythos, so having her in a Flash movie is a must.

Others I Considered: Jessica Biel

Mera - Rachel Nichols
(Conan The Barbarian)

Mera was a tricky character to cast. My original choice was Evan Rachel Wood, but she was too young (25) for my Aquaman choice, Alexander Skarsgard (36). So after some consideration, I decided on Rachel Nichols (32). Nichols is a pretty good actress, despite the fact that she has been in some mediocre films (such as G.I. Joe: Rise Of Cobra and last year's awful Conan The Barbarian reboot). I think she would be a good choice for Mera, and would work well with Skarsgard's Aquaman.

Others I Considered: Evan Rachel Wood, Kirsten Dunst

That's that. As stated before, my epic DC Cinematic Univere fancast finale will feature some of DC Comics' greatest villains.
