How to Survive Zombiegeddon: Understanding the menace

How can we hope to survive if we don't quite understand the menaces that'll be faced during Zomiegeddon?

Zombies have been a part of our culture for decades, but where did they come from? How did zombies go from being just a small reference in the Book of Revelations to the apocalyptic epidemic they are today? Many say that George A. Romero created and perfected the modern day zombie, but the truth is, they go back further than that.

Frankenstein and The Mummy were some of the first to be brought to life in books and movies as well as legend. However, there is a case of a Haitian man who suffered from Clairvius Narcisse, and was a zombie for 2 years. This was an actual event that happened, not some movie or novel or comic book but an actual situation that developed in Haiti. This case was the source material of the book "The Serpent and the Rainbow" and Wes Craven's movie by the same name. The man was given some sort of chemical to make him appear dead, much like what Juliet drank from the vile in "Romeo and Juliet", however when he woke up he had no memory and was an emotionless slave.

Zombies do exist in reality, but not like we have been trained to believe. The "Zombie" epidemic will more than likely be a mutated stand of rabies or mad cow disease and or possibly be a more advanced version of the chemical used Haiti.

However, as I've stated in previous articles, zombies will not be the only menace each of us will face during Zombiegeddon. Other living breathing humans will be trying to survive as well. Scavengers will do anything to survive from holding you at gun point and taking everything you have by force or stealing it while you're gone. These menaces won't be as much of a threat to you as the others but still a threat non the less. Everything eventually runs out, which is why people will grow desperate. Food, water, weapons, ammo, fuel and vehicles will all become desperately needed for survival. Many of the smart ones, will dress like military or police to gain your trust and get you to lower your guard. They'll appear to be legitimate by also driving around in military or police issued vehicles, their hair will be cut short to protect their illusion etc. If they are legitimate they also can't be trusted, they'll be just as desperate as everyone else. "Diary of the Dead" taught us not to stop for military personnel unless they're in a tank. "28 Days Later" taught us not to follow military personnel to their fortress because women will become sex slaves along with younger girls and men will be forced to allow it.

Food will become scarce so we'll have to either revert back to hunting or like in the movie "Alive", we'll have to resort to cannibalism. The newly dead will be first, if they aren't infected they'll be kept on ice until ready to be cooked and eatin. Only enough to survive at first, but then it'll become natural and feral like in "Texas Chainsaw Massacre". This will become the more likely scenario in the northern and mid-western states and colder nations. The cold harsh winters will cause zombies to migrate south to warmth for survival while the living stay behind to try and survive. Animals will either hibernate or also migrate south, which will leave people to starve. I estimate this would occur 2 years after Z-Day. The first year, there will still be plenty of food so many people won't have the need to hunt etc. However, as soon as the second winter hits, food will become scarce and humans will have to resort to eating each other unless they learn to hunt.

Animals will become another menace to watch out for. Their food supplies will become low either do to hunting, starving zombies or not being able to eat do to their food supplies being turned from zombie bites. Chances are, many of the animals will be turned as well. If zombies are unable to find living people to eat, they will resort to attacking animals which would more than likely start with cattle, dogs and cats. A bite from a zombie will probably turn them as well, and they'll turn other animals and other humans. This also means that when hunting, you'll have to be careful that the animal you're hunting isn't turned.

Water which everyone needs for survival, will become the biggest menace of all. Lakes, rivers, creeks, streams, etc are all dangerous. If a zombie has gotten into the water supply, then you're shit out of luck. If you or any animals happen to drink infected water, it would be just like if you got bit. Even if a zombie didn't get into the water supply, it's blood could have. Only bottled water is safe.
