I’m a 90’s kid, and once upon a time I was a huge Power Rangers fan. At some point, I grew up, and because I wanted to be one of the “cool kids”, I stopped watching the show (plus, at some point, the show became really bad). But the news that we are getting a Power Rangers movie in less than 2 years really excites me. So these are my few ideas for the Power Rangers movie, plus some Fan-Casting. Now remember, all of this is just my opinion, so everyone is allowed to agree and disagree.
First of all, I hope that this movie will reimagine the Power Rangers. Just like comics, what worked on the show, won’t necessary work on the big screen. I think the movie should be a PG-13 movie, but I don’t want it to be “dark and realistic”, this isn’t The Dark Knight, it’s the Power Rangers, kids should go and watch this movie and enjoy it, but in the same time adults should have a good time with the movie too. I hope it will be a mix of the good parts of Pacific Rim, Avengers, Man of Steel and little from Transformers (only the good and cool stuff!!! I didn’t say I want to see a Michael Bay movie).
So let’s start with the Rangers. One of the biggest problems I had with the old show is the Rangers; most of them didn’t have any personality or character. Now days if you want to have a good movie, you need some good characters, some good development and the Rangers need some depth and personality. You don’t build your characters around the story; you build the story around the characters.
I know that Lionsgate is aiming to have the Rangers as teenagers, and I have no problem with that (as long as we don’t have stupid love triangles and annoying teenagers stuff). They could go the Spider-Man route, and have these teenagers try to balance their lives between being teenagers and superheroes.
This brings me to my next point. Power Rangers are superheroes. And Lionsgate should treat them as such. I want the Rangers to be the big heroes that saved the world by the end of this movie.
And now for the cast. I kept the names of the characters, but I don’t want them to be like in the show. I want this to be a reboot and a reimagining version of the Power Rangers. Plus, since it’s not cool to have a black actor as a black Ranger, and an Asian actress as the yellow Ranger, I played little with the colors.
I know that some of the actors here are not really “teenagers” but this is Hollywood, we have a 30 year old Spider-Man that plays a teenager. I hope you can roll with me on this. Plus not all of this actors and actresses are the best in the business, but I think that when push comes to shove they can do a good job. And we really don’t need an Oscar preference level in a Power Rangers movie.
Cast:
Jason/Red Ranger – Kellan Lutz
Jason is from America, but he lived most of his life on the run. His father (played by Jason David Frank) is the red Ranger and he is the last Ranger, and he had protected Zordon for many years. Jason and his father left Earth years ago in order to protect Zordon and find the ancient Power Rangers force, but in the begining of the movie his father will dies on Eltar.
Jasons wants some vengeance, after Lord Zedd killed his father. I’m not basing this Jason on the Jason from the original show. This Jason is little mix between Thor and Peter Quill. He believes that his destiny is to be the red Ranger, but he needs to learn what it means to be a Power Ranger and the leader of the Ranger.
Zack/Blue Ranger – Dayo Okeniyi
Zack lives in Africa. When he was just a kid, he was taken from his home by an African Rebel faction, and he was part of their gang ever since. He has a good hart, but he is powerless against the war lords of Africa. Zack is a loner, and just wants to use the PR power to save his family and friends.
Kimberly/White Ranger – Karen Gillan
Kimberly is a British young woman who is very smart that feels she always needs to prove herself. Her mother is working for the UN. She might look like a nice girl, but she cna kick you real hard.
Billy/Yellow Ranger – Dev Patel
Billy lives in South America. He is a genius kid, who can fix and do anything he puts his mind into. But his father is a brutal drug kingpin. Billy thinks that the power will make him a superhero. And I know that Dev Patel is British, but I think he could play a South American if he wanted to.
Trini/Black Ranger – Go Ah-sung
Trini is an Asian rich girl, who just wants to be normal. Her father is a famous movie star. Trini thinks that all of this Power Rangers thing is B.S, but she still can kick your ass.
Zordon - Ian McShane
Zordon was born Ten thousand years ago on the planet Eltar. Zordon was the first Power Ranger, and he was the founder of the Power Rangers. For many years he and the other Rangers protected the universe, but then he was betrayed by Zedd (who at the time was the Red Ranger). The two were like a brother. Zedd injured Zordon, and Zordon lost most of his power. Unlike the show, in the movie Zordon isn't stuck in the weird a
quarium, he has his own body.
Jason’s father/Red Ranger - Jason David Frank
Lord Zedd – Viggo Mortensen
Rita Repulsa - Famke Janssen
Goldar - Kevin Durand
Tommy/Green Ranger - Sam Claflin
We will see the Green Ranger only at the end of the movie, and he will be a major villain in the 2nd movie, as we will get a reimagined version of the evil green Ranger saga on the big screen.
And now, here are some concept art and cool pics that might make you want to see this movie even more.
