Reasons I am loosing faith in Kevin Tancharoen's Mortal Kombat reboot.

Title says it all

As any of you who have read my articles should know by now, I am a die-hard Mortal Kombat fan and currently am writing a fan script. Kevin Tancharoen has brought life and new interest in a Mortal Kombat reboot. He did it with Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, a short film that ruined everything that made Mortal Kombat cool by making it realistic. He then came out with Mortal Kombat: Legacy, a web series that had a mix of realism and fantasy that made for an overall pretty good web series and he was announced as director of the reboot. But, there are a couple concerns I have with this. Here I will explain why I am loosing/lost faith in his "vision" of the Mortal Kombat franchise.

1: Budget

This is the biggest reason why there is no release date or real casting announcements yet. They haven't settled on a budget. This for any movie is a real problem. No crew, no movie. No budget, no movie.

2: His "vision"

There are many problems with his vision. The best example is the picture above. Want to know who that is suppose to be? Baraka. Yes, a tarkatan (a human, demon hybrid). His vision is a black guy whom is a surgeon who wents nuts and surgically attached blades to his arms. Yes, he wants things real. I also want to put my foot up his.. nope nvm. I'm gonna keep this PG, but you get the point. This is not the person who should be helming the rebooted adaptation to my favorite videogame franchise.

3: Premise

Don't even get me started: "The live-action reboot will follow a lowly unlucky supermarket employee who discovers that he has out of this world powers and must decide between good and evil, even though the evil side has helped him discover his true potential and who he really is." I am going to take a wild guess and say that the rumor is true. At that point, I wanted to commit suicide (not really, but that's what it felt like). I really shouldn't have to explain why this is a bad call.

4: Season 2 expectations, Johnny Cage

I understand they had to do an origin episode for Johnny Cage. But, from what I can tell. This will have NO humor at all, maybe a slight chuckle here or there but that is it. No comedy from the comic relief. Are you kidding me? Plus, their gonna have Rain and Kenshi as well as Kung Lao and Lui Kang. Lui Kang and Kung Lao should be immediates. Rain would be pretty nice but they should have waited longer for Kenshi.

5: Pronunciation

They pronounced the realm of Edenia wrong, they pronounce Sindel wrong! How do you do that? The pronunciation is already in the games, how do you screw that up???

I apologize if this comes off more as a rant. But overall, I had some faith in the reboot because of the web series. I look at everything now, despite the web series still being good overall. I have lost any faith in this reboot that I ever had. I'm confident (but not in a cocky way) that my fan made script is what would make a successful MK movie. Not the crap that their churning up. Give Ed Boon the control that they gave J.K Rowling for the Harry Potter movies. Sure, Netherrealm Studios is owned by Warner Bros. but should that mean he bows down to them? I call bullcrap on the whole thing.

I completely agree with you. I'm also a die hard MK fan and I understand this director wants a "different" version, but you have got to honor the source material and do it right- especially considering this is a "reboot" and reboots mean you should get it right this time.

Personally, I thought the 1st MK was enjoyable (for it's time) and they really need to pick a subplot and focus on that since MK has so many of those.

I think they should do it on the whole Subzero/Scorpion storyline. That storyline is very compelling and if done right, could blend into the tournament itself. But hey, let's hope some miraculous thing gets pulled off and we get the MK movie we deserve.

@DRem21: I am actually (as stated in the editorial) working on a Mortal Kombat film script, fan made of course. One of my big things is character development and background explination, one of the big ones is the Sub-Zero & Scorpion storyline. Hopefully when I post it(the sneak peak will be up before the full script) people will respond to it well because I want to make it a trilogy.

I also own both of the original movies, I really enjoyed the original but could care less for the second.

@TheLizard1 that's awesome. I'm also a Screenwriter and have a few features I'm working on myself. A lot of us in film school want to make our own MK movie, but with copyright and all, it's kind of hard to.

I'll definitely check yours out when you release it.

Thanks man. I am actually 16, I am looking at going to film school so I can become a screenwriter and hopefully one day, a director as well. It's my first screenplay (I'm working on something original too) and I know doing a product based one is a risk but movies and Mortal Kombat are my two big passions lol and I've always told myself that Mortal Kombat is going to be my first. I'm working hard on it and being very careful about it, the sneak peak should be up in a month or two and the full script should be up a month or so after.

From my own personal experience in writing screenplays and publishing novels, I'd be VERY careful with what you post on here. There are greedy people out there who will steal your stuff and claim it for their own.

Film School is fun and all, but you learn more from being on set and doing work on your own. Degrees don't get you crap in this world because as soon as you graduate (I got like a year and a half left) you're going to be like everyone else with a degree.

However, once you do go to film school, make side projects and start with internships. They will ask you this question: "So... you go to school... and? What else do you do?" You don't want to be the one that says "uh... uh... uh..." I have friends that have that mentality thinking school will get them far. It doesnt...

But keep up with your passions and NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK with everyone you meet. You never know that person you just met could be an open door for you. It's happened to me a couple of times already. Business cards are a must too. Without them, you won't come off as professional.

Keep doing what you're doing though. I'm only 6 years older than you but it's nice seeing someone your age actually giving an f about their life and doing something with it.

I am excited for the movie for one reason and one reason only- KABAL. Kabal is an MK character who never got any limelight.

So I'm glad Tancharoen is actually gonna introduce him for the first time ever.

Kabal is a character I always really loved and I even unintentionally taught some of my friends about him lol.

It's Kabal's turn to get some attention for once...

By the way @TheLizard- I totally agree with you about the Kenshi thing. He's waaaay too new of a character to appear in the web series.

With Kenshi, his inclusion almost seems rather "forced" actually.

LP4: I actually am planning on having Kabal in my Mortal Kombat trilogy. He won't be introduced in the first, but he will be in the trilogy.
