PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 4 is a 2012 horror film directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. It is a sequel to PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 1,2, and 3, and takes place after the events of 2. The plot concerns a family who has a strange mother and child move in near them. When paranormal activity happens, the teenage girl records it all. Now, I think that if they concluded the series with 3, it would have been awesome. We would have known just enough and still have mystery. But 4 happens, and tells a story that really didn't have to be told. At the end of 2, the demon finally gets the son. The story could have ended there, but we got PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 4.
PLOT: The plot of this film, I feel, is completely unnecessary. So that's a major strike against it already. It's a story that I don't want to see. It doesn't add to the storyline, really, and ends up being just a sequel. It's not horrible, but it ends up just being mediocre.
ACTING: The main character is this teenage girl. I thought she would annoy me, but she actually didn't. She and her sort-of boyfriend are pretty good, but every other character in this film is a total oblivious idiot.
SPECIAL EFFECTS/CGI: This film doesn't have as much action as 3, but the CGI is really fake looking. For example, there is a part in the film where the mom is picked up and thrown by the demon. I couldn't help but laugh, it looked pretty terrible.
ATMOSPHERE/SCARES: This film tried to mix the suspense of the first 2 with the cool stuff in 3, and it just doesn't work. It's made by the same guys who made 3. That means that people that are good at making cool stuff are trying to make scary stuff, and it just isn't that great. This film isn't scary, there's not a lot of cool moments, and it relies on too many jump scares.
All in all, it's a pretty mediocre entry into a cool franchise. It doesn't add anything to the story, and it's not scary. It succeeds in making teenagers likeable, and it was good enough for me to want to see the series continue. I would give it:
4 out of 10, or, 2 stars, or in other words, the only reason you should buy this is to have the full series, but you should ask for it as a gift instead of buying it yourself. Or, you should just rent it.
I would have preferred that they left it as a trilogy, and I hope PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 5 learns from 4's mistakes and gets back to the creepiness of the first 2.
What did you guys think of PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 4? Did you want it to stay as a trilogy? Comment below, and let me know!
COMING SOON: I will review some HALLOWEEN films, and the PSYCHO films.
