The Iron Man 3 trailer was released on iTunes Trailers last night, and I woke out of a dead sleep to watch it and wasn't disappointed. A resoundingly impressive first look, the Iron Man 3 trailer was dark, tense, fascinating and not long enough. But, still, there was one thing missing from it: A drink.
The Iron Man films have been painting a portrait of Stark's alcoholism since minute one. The first time we see him, it's not his face but a glass of whiskey, and the drinking continues throughout the first film, albeit in the background, unaddressed. The unfairly maligned Iron Man 2 was the darkest of the batch, devoting an entire sequence to Stark's alcoholism, and effectively making Stark the antagonist of the film (much to the discomfort of a good deal of the audience). Stark trashes his house, pees in his suit, pushes away Pepper and ends up in a grudge match with his best buddy who steals his multi-million dollar super secret weapon.
Even the astronomically-successful
Avengers had Stark pick up the bottle during his confrontation with Loki-- it was under the guise of a distraction, but Stark's true weakness is crystal clear. Despite all of these strong warnings, not one character has ever come out and said the 'A' word.
The dark, intense look of
Iron Man 3 gives Black and crew the perfect chance to actually address the alcoholism head on. Black has said that he doesn't want to do
Demon In a Bottle-- the famous 80's
Iron Man story arc that confronted Stark's alcoholism directly and found him losing his company, the Iron Man suit, and nearly his life-- but there's no way it can be avoided. Tony Stark is an alcoholic, and no matter who he battles, outwits and beds, his greatest demons will always lay internal. They may stay dormant for another
Iron Man film, but they'll never let him go.
