Will Harry Actually Be The One To Kill Gwen?

We all know that Gwen Stacy's death is a definitive part of the Spider-Man mythos. And it has been greatly hinted that she will be killed by Harry's Goblin but will Harry's Goblin really be the one who kills her? CRAZY THEORY TIME!

We all know Harry is going to be the Goblin in the second Spider-Man film. I think there is overwhelming evidence here:

And here:

Many people believed coupled with many different hints at Gwen's death in this film such as:

Gwen Wearing the Same Outfit from the Night Gwen Stacy Died

Spider-Man's catch in the same way he caught Gwen there

and Spider-Man fighting the Green Goblin in the same location:

However, I think there is something we're missing here. First of all, doesn't this seem like an odd thing to almost give away in the first trailer of the film. Unless...this whole thing is designed to fake us out and make it seem like Gwen is dying in this scene thanks to the Green Goblin, but, really, that comes later in the film, after lulling us into a false sense of security.

Let me elaborate. There is a scene in the trailer where Peter tells Gwen that this is his "path":

I feel like this is going to be a beautiful pay off to the promise he made Gwen's dad. Before, he had thought that he could keep her safe but when Goblin kidnapped her and nearly killed her, Peter realized that it would be selfish and irresponsible to stay with her. He tells her that he can't give up being Spider-Man, so he has to give up being with Gwen. Much like Spider-Man 2...without the happy ending.

Peter leaves Gwen at the bridge and then leaves again to go clear his mind where Gwen stays at the bridge, contemplating the situation:

However, Peter had managed to defeat Norman's son, getting rid of Norman's last chance for a cure. Norman is desperate and decides to use the unfinished Goblin serum on himself to give himself the strength to at least exact revenge. However, Norman's disease mutates the Goblin formula, giving life to this:

Spider-Man catches wind of this and heads to the George Washington Bridge and finds Gwen, unconscious, on top of the bridge, with Goblin holding her. Peter pleads with "Harry", thinking the mutation must've only progressed further. Green Goblin only cackles and tosses Gwen off the bridge. Spider-Man leaps over to catch her but he only snaps her neck by catching her by the foot.

Peter threatens Harry and promises to kill him. After bringing Gwen down to the first responders, Peter goes to Ravencroft to figure out how Harry escaped but finds Harry in his new cell, only mutated to his skinny, green form. Peter beats Harry and asks how he managed to break out of his cell.

However, Harry is able to convince Peter that he never broke out and that he was in the cell from the moment Peter put him in there. Peter breaks down and asks himself who the new Goblin is.

An after-credits scene shows Goblin lurking in the alleys now, as Norman Osborn, not Harry Osborn.

Great thinking. I like your idea of this.

Its a shame if Harry kills Gwen not Norman......lets hope Norman/Goblin turns up for the final kill and sets it up for the 3rd

Doubt it. Norman might kill her, but doubt it happens like this.

If Harry's the one who kills Gwen, I will not be a happy camper. Either follow the continuity, or die. This is an adaptation, so it should be as faithful as possible to the comics (if not, fail).

Nice theory.

Interesting theory and good eye. I dont mind if Harry kills Gwen or if Norman does as long as it fits with in the story.

Aside from that i think it's a really cool idea although it would be sad to see her character go.

I said that theory long time ago..

I like the idea but they're not going to add a fourth villain. They still have to fit ya know- Electro and Rhino or should I say R.H.I.N.O into the second one

Nope. Nope. Nope. They're not killing her in this sequel. Norman will kill her in the third, I just know they want to do the whole love triangle/jealousy angle with MJ. Plus it plays better if MJ is around to help Peter absorb the impact from Gwen's death.

I think that isn't Green Goblin probably their version of proto or hob goblin.

If she is killed in the second one, I think it will lose its impact and conflict with the general tone I get from the trailer. This feels like a standard hero faces the greater threat, in not one but multiple villains now. Villains will be the highlight, and I think the third will see Peter's relationship developed more, making the third more of an emotional and darker toned film, appropriate for a villain like Norman.

Also it almost seems as if everyone wants her to be killed in this, because she died in the comics and most just consider her a dead character walking. What better way to stay ahead of the masses, then not giving into the idea that they should just kill her.

Honestly, I think that what you've described is very good and I'd like to see it that way. However, I don't see them throwing in another villain.

@Doopie - I really like your idea of Gwen sacrificing herself for Peter. That's a good idea, but you don't think it would make him want to quit being Spiderman? I like the idea for the third perhaps, so that MJ can play a more pivotal role in Peter's life and provide motivation for Spidey, as you said the classic damsel in distress.

@Doopie - I see what your saying, and by all means your definitely right on about those themes that are central to the core of Spiderman. I just figured if it was Spiderman she ends up sacrificing herself for, I could easily see Peter thinking, well if I had never been Spiderman the woman I loved would still be here. Yes I can certainly see from your point of view as well, good points.

And exactly, as I said earlier I just don't see how they resist that love triangle cliche.

Doopie

Very true, he's already lost Uncle Ben and Captain Stacy. I see what you mean with Spiderman 3's love triangle, however this Spiderman will be able to say their triangle was two women and Peter versus the two guys with MJ of Raimi's.

It was a great theory up until you introduced Normn. I could see it ending with Gwen on the bridge and Peter swinging off then after the credits is Norman's transformation leading to a third part.
