Veteran's Day: Sci-fi/Genre Movies Featuring the Military

In honor of our veterans today, I put together a list of some of my favorite science fiction/genre films that have excellent representations of our men and women in uniform. May we never take for granted the sacrifices and acts of pure heroism they have made and will continue to make.

Like the time they killed Hitler in that theater, or when the military branched off into Starfleet and set about discovering the universe. Please take the time to thank a veteran today, and even invite one over for beer and one of these flicks. These are not in any specific order, and I welcome all readers to add your favorites.

BATTLE: LOS ANGELES

Great portrayal of modern US Military handling an alien threat on home turf.

300

Talk about making sacrifice for country...ALL 300 of these dudes die. Oops, spolier alert.

PREDATOR

The most extreme, 80's-fied roid-rampaging, cigar-chomping, mini-gun blasting soldiers ever.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA

While only not technically a movie, it is the most credible blend of real military life with science fiction themes that exists. Period.

IRON MAN

Let's not forget about the fact that Tony Stark watched those soldiers die in Afghanistan, due to his weapons. His war on his own brand is fueled greatly by his guilt for these men and women. Plus those jets kinda kick Iron Man's ass.

ALIENS

Colonial Space Marines are hardcore. Except Hicks. He's always bitching.

AVATAR

While not the most flattering portrayal of a future military's goals and techniques, this movie definitely had a badass aresenal, featuring awesome mech-suits. (Just like Cameron's previously-listed film). It's Ferngully meets Pocahontas...in space!

TRANSFORMERS

The Marines throughout this series are pretty badass dudes, as most service men and women are in most Bay films. But in TF3, they step it up. Who would have thought that one of the highlights of the series would be humans flying through Chicago?

STARSHIP TROOPERS

Balls-to-the-wall, bug-blasting shameless propaganda film. Despite cheesy acting, there are some fine moments in this...pure fun to be had. Plus, Neil-Patrick Harris is a psychic. Eww, don't touch it, NPH!

INGLORIOUS BASTERDS

Veering wildly from fact, especially toward the end, this terrific revenge flick steps enough out of reality's boundaries so that I can list it here.

PANDORUM

A surprisingly great movie. Part mystery, part action, part sci-fi, with a what-the-frak-that's-awesome ending.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER

Couldn't really be more obvious.

Only one movie better than ALL OTHERS:

Yes Reservoir Dogs! Also I think the original Stargate movie with Kurt Russel could get an honorable mention.
