FANTASTIC FOUR: Emma Stone Reportedly Offered Sue Storm; Daveed Diggs In Talks For The Thing

It sounds like Marvel Studios was aiming big in an attempt to fill the role of Sue Storm in the Fantastic Four reboot, offering Emma Stone the part back when casting first got underway...

Still no official casting announcements for Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four reboot, but the rumors continue to fly, and we have a couple of very interesting updates.

Sue Storm is said to be a focal point of the story, and it sounds like Kevin Feige and co. were aiming to secure a major A-list star to take on the role.

According to Jeff Sneider on this week's episode of the Hot Mic podcast, Emma Stone (The Amazing Spider-Man, Cruella) was offered the part of Invisible Woman back when casting first got underway, but wanted too much money. If the studio struggles to cast the role, though, they could always swing back around to Stone!

We are also hearing that Daveed Diggs (Hamilton, The Little Mermaid) is now officially in talks to play Ben Grimm/The Thing after being rumored to be a frontrunner a couple of weeks ago.

Last we heard, Adam Driver had closed his deal to play Reed Richards, but that's yet to be confirmed. Still no word on who might be in contention to portray Johnny Storm (Paul Mescal reportedly passed).

Sneider has also heard that Marvel wants to hold off on announcing the main cast until San Diego Comic-Con in July.

Matt Shakman will direct from a script by Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer. Plot details are still a mystery, but Feige has confirmed that this will not be another origin story for the super-team.

“A lot of people know this origin story. A lot of people know the basics. How do we take that and bring something that they’ve never seen before?” he said in a 2022 interview, comparing this new take on the heroes to Marvel Studios' pact with Sony to bring Spider-Man into the MCU. “We’ve set a very high bar for ourselves with bringing that to the screen.”

@regularmovieguy - Do they know how much they paid RDJ? Talks must have been happening during Chapek's time as CEO.

Yeah I was rooting for that to be a good one.

@regularmovieguy -
Ford deserved a better send off and it makes Swamp thing less exciting. Mangold does come off as a douchey pretentious jack-ass so this will be a nice slice of humble pie for him. Oh well, at least Red hulk will be cool to see next year. Guess we know who's going to come out of June bleeding the most.

@regularmovieguy - Can you imagine how Peter 3 will react to seeing Sue Storm look identical to his Gwen in secret Wars?

@MCUKnight11 - To be fair RDJ did not make anything close in the beginning as he did in the end.Hell Marvel did not even want to cast him Iron man director had to fight to get him casted.

Not sure if I am a fan of this. Great actress but Sue Storm should be a striking beauty that evryone including Black Panther and Namor are attracted to. Emma stone is cute but not a timeless beauty. Hopefully this is just a rumor. I would be Ok with this either way.

@Forthas - you know beauty is highly subjective? what you're describing seems more like a striking example of canonized western-european beauty.

@Midnaslament - I am not saying that "beauty" is exclusive to european traits. I am accepting canonized western-european because traditionally Sue Storm is of european decent. I think that Emma Stone is a beauty, but the traditions that we have all been subjected to makes me look at her beauty in a certain way. So for example, Emma Stone reminds me of the stereotypical sweet and cute girl in class who was everyones friend. Someone like Alice Eve, who represents a different type of european cannonized beauty, is the inaccessible high school beauty queen that every guy would like to get with.

That to me should be the subtext of Sue Storm. She is the woman that every man wants to get with - even kings - but she wants to be with the nerdy, awkward, smart book nerd. Emma - to me - does not have THAT kind of beauty.

@Forthas - Why isn't she?

@dagenspear - Hard to explain...I will use an example. In the 1999 James Bond film "The World Is Not Enough" Denise Richards played Dr. Christmas Jones. Many people had a hard time accepting her as a nuclear physicist because she looks like a super model. There was no reason why she ccould not be a nuclear physicist but she did not fit the traditional mold of one.

So to answer your question, Emma Stone does not strike me as a person who Kings would pine over. maybe there is royalty that pines for her, but she does not fit that traditional mold.

@Forthas - I may be wrong, but it's possible that they are positioning Sue Storm to be something other than merely an object for men to desire. Maybe, like, a fully fledged character with a personality and goals?

Regardless, if you think this woman isn't turning every head in any room she walks into, your standards may be a touch unrealistic.

@Forthas - I completely agree, I don't get Sue Storm when I look at Emma Stone
Midnaslament
Midnaslament - 5/19/2023, 10:19 AM
@Forthas - Sue Storm has always been depicted as that kind of beauty, mainly because that was the standard even more since the 60's all the way to the 00's approximately, so it would be good to have something different for a change, instead of having the same and the expected, don't you think?
Forthas

@ClintThaHamster - So two things...

1) I HOPE that they are positioning Sue Storm to be more than the object of people's desire! But they could set that up by makiing her appear to be that then during the course of fleshing her out thwart that stereotype. I think about Superman 3 when actress Pamela Stephenson who portrayed "Lorelei" in the film played her as a dumb blonde who was actually brilliant.

This was only hinted at throughout the film but I thought it was an interesting subversive element to an otherwise bad film that could have been a lot more and perhaps elevated the film if they built on that sub text. I would prefer a similar "drop dead gorgeous" Sue Storm who truns out to be more than what she appears to be. When I look at Emma Stone, portraying her as a smart attractive woman is exactly what she looks like she would be.

2) I am sure Emma Stone turns heads...but if you look up these "sexiest actress lists" Emma Stone is certainly on a few but not as much or as highly ranked as many other actresses that appear on them, so that is a indicative that she is not widely regarded for that kind of beauty.

Clintthahamster - 5/19/2023, 10:37 AM
@Forthas - I would hope that we as a society have moved on past that kind of tired trope. "Wait, she's a beautiful woman AND smart? Inconceivable!" It's right up there with "gorgeous girl is considered to be ugly until she takes her glasses off, lets her hair down, and puts on a sexy top." Let's leave that shit in the 80s where it belongs.
Forthas
Forthas - 5/19/2023, 10:59 AM
@Midnaslament - But would that serve the story? Let me use an extreme example to make the point. Let's say Melissa McArthy was cast as Sue Storm. If during the course of her turn as Sue Storm, would you believe that Namor would see her and fall hard for her.

It sounds as if you would like everyone to redefine what beauty is and make Sue Storm the vehicle to redefine that. That is fine but everyone would have to agree with that and when the Namor, Sue Storm meeting happens then everyone would accept it. We are not there! If they decided to race swap Sue Storm...I would be all for that, but that casting would have to have the "drop dead gorgeous" actress that could still subvert that stereotype and serve the story as her being actractive to powerful men...and/or women.
Forthas
Forthas - 5/19/2023, 11:12 AM
@ClintThaHamster - I don't think we have moved past that! That is one of the reasons why I want a Sue Storm that could subvert those stereotypes. That has been a theme of Sue Storm in other ways. People have suggested that she may in fact be the most powerful member of the Fantastic Four. Assuming she is, then the reason people don't often see that is because it seems contrary when compared with superstong rock monster, or a human with the powers of a sun! She subverts the obvious and i would like that to be the case in how she looks and acts.
Clintthahamster
Clintthahamster - 5/19/2023, 11:45 AM
@Forthas - If we haven't moved past that stereotype, then further perpetuating it isn't going to help things. I think that having a actress playing Sue who is charming, intelligent, and attractive enough to land on SOME (if not all) lists of the sexiest women in the world is probably sufficient.

It's funny because after TASM ended and they were still dating, I thought Garfield and Stone should've been Reed and Sue for the MCU.
