IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY Star Glenn Howerton Weighs In On Possibility Of Playing Reed Richards In FANTASTIC FOUR

Many fans would love to see It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Glenn Howerton suit up as Mister Fantastic in Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four reboot, and the actor has now responded to the possibility...

Despite a release date delay last year, excitement for Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four reboot remains high. Marvel's First Family being part of the MCU is long overdue, as is a take on this team that does the comic books justice.

Rumours about who will play each member of the Fantastic Four continue to swirl, with most of the chatter online surrounding Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic. John Krasinski played the stretchy superhero in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness but, for reasons we can't entirely fathom, isn't expected to return for this reboot.

WandaVision's Matt Shakman is at the helm of Fantastic Four following Jon Watts' departure, but could he enlist one of his old friends from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (which he directed several episodes of) to play Reed?

Many actors believe Glenn Howerton would be a great fit to play the MCU's smartest man, and the actor addressed the possibility during a recent interview with The Movie Dweeb

"Somehow, in my mind, there’s no chance that anything that I will ever do will be watched by people, and I don’t know what that is, I think it’s this sort of perpetual underdog thing that I feel, which makes no sense," the Dennis actor admitted. "But, no, look, it would be super fun, and obviously, the director, Matt Shakman, is a very close friend and an absolutely incredible director, so it’d be super fun to work with him again."

"But ain't nobody called me about that yet, but I would accept that phone call."

Howerton's name is often brought up by fans, though Star Wars' Adam Driver is the current rumoured frontrunner. Other names we've heard include Diego Luna, Tom Ellis, Andrew Lincoln, and Penn Badgley.

Very little is known about what Marvel Studios has planned for Fantastic Four, though we have heard that it's likely to be a cosmic adventure that includes the Silver Surfer. There's been some talk of Doctor Doom showing up, though we find that hard to believe given how overused the villain has been in previous movies.

Fantastic Four is set to be released in theaters on February 14, 2025.

I don’t imagine he’s the kind of guy they’re looking for.

I am worried. I have little confidence in Shakman after crappy Wanda Vision.

I hope they totally surprise everyone with the casting because a lot of people have suggested some terrible cast ideas.

@DocSpock - WandaVision was one of, if not the BEST, Disney+ marvel show imo.

@MrDandy -

We disagree. It happens.

Hawkeye was my favorite D+ MCU show.

I love the MCU movies, but am greatly underwhelmed by most of the D+ shows.

@DocSpock - personally I LOVED WandaVision the most out of all the D+ shows.
It's great to see how so many shows are beloved for other reasons.

IMO WandaVision, Moon Knight and Loki were the best. For others its Hawkeye or Ms. Marvel! It's great to see the variety

@Blergh -

We all have our different likes.

I wonder how they will use all of these characters in a coherent way in the movies.

he'd be a lot of fun, but if those driver rumors are true then i'm expecting them to go with a super high-caliber actor now

Isn't it weird how they still haven't found a cast for the F4? They've had that Shakman guy as director for awhile now.

This movie has been in development since 2019 ffs.

Idk, I think this is weird. I know Feige wants to get this perfect (as he should), but why is it taking THIS long?

@KWilly - maybe they already have, and they're just waiting for a big conference to announce it. I can see them drop the cast at SDCC, if it hasn't leaked before then

When I first read that, I though "not a [frick]ing chance."

Buuuutt...... then I started to think about this. Good comedic actors tend to do VERY well in serious roles. Howerton has gotten much better at his craft since that pilot episode of It's Always Sunny, and as odd as it sounds, he has the perfect combo of roles to meld into a great Reed.

Not only that, but he does ALMOST look the part, but I'd argue he's getting much too old to carry a franchise at this point.

Hmmm... now that I think of it... yeah I could really see him being great... just a little too old at this point.

bkmeijer1 - 1/16/2023, 10:01 AM
@Demigods - was thinking the exact same thing. Although he isn't that old yet. RDJ was also in his 40s already when he was cast as Iron Man.

@bkmeijer1 - that's true. That might just be the make up department for It's Always Sunny that's making me think he's too old looking at this point.

I could definitely see it though.

Think Howerton would be a solid choice. Out of the names mentioned in the articles though, I think I like Badgley the most. Think he's the right age too.

I can't see Adam Driver giving up 10 years of his career to stand in front of green screens - especially after having already spent a good chunk of time doing just that.

nah, if they are going to cast someone like Howerton they need to put him into a villain role and tap into his natural ability to channel just pure psychopath. He's downright terrifying in some episodes of always sunny. He would've been a perfect Kilgrave
Blergh
Blergh - 1/16/2023, 10:07 AM
I mean, Matt directed a LOT of Sunny episodes so I wouldn't put it past him to have the cast show up.

IMO the one that has the best chance to join the MCU is Danny, for his fame obviously. As what character? I don't know.

Jake Gyllenhaal should have been Reed Richard's. As much as I liked him as Mysterio I feel like his talent was wasted.

I've always wanted to see Howerton as the Joker. Not sure how I feel about him as Reed but I doubt it would be a casting that would turn me away from the movie.

He seems closer to a Johnny Storm. But I don't know if he's a fit for either.

If they had to choose any comedic actor to play Reed, Adam Scott would be my pick. Yes I know he's in Madame Webb but still he can do double duty in two universes. He's got the awkward charm, he doesn't take himself too seriously (which will take a 180 later down the line if they decide to turn him into the Maker), and I think he can play the "smart-but- not-too-smart-to-the-point-that-he's-a-complete-jerk" role really well.

My casting for Sue on the other hand is Greta Gerwig, she and Adam are pretty close in age, she has a lot of experience in both comedic and dramatic roles, she just looks a lot like Sue, and I think a more action oriented role would suit her well.

I'll take this over his role in the dumpster fire that is Velma, sheesh.. also The Last of us is not only a perfect video game adaptation, it's also a top tier pilot episode. Holy crap!

If I were in charge of casting, Reed Richards would be played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

I’d love him to be Reed Richards in National Lampoons Fantastic Four with the always Sunny cast playing the others. Charlie is human torch, Mac as the Thing and D as the Invisible Bird Lady. The villain could be Devito as Moleman. That being said, I don’t think I could not see him as Denis Reynolds in anything else. I think there are better actors for the role.

I mean he's shown he can definitely play a know it all quite well, but I'd picture him more for Doom than Richards.

He was close to being Star Lord so would be nice to see him get Reed.
WeaponXCII

Don’t think I’ve ever really seen any of his work, so I can’t say if he would make a good Reed, but if Sarah Finn picks him, then I would trust the decision. Mostly, though, I’m just ready for the rumors to be over at this point.
