Josh Trank Comments On FANTASTIC FOUR Reviews And The "Fantastic" Version We'll Never See

Following the negative response to Fantastic Four (it currently sits at 9% on Rotten Tomatoes), Josh Trank has taken to Twitter to comment on the response to the movie, and appears to lay the blame at the feet of Fox by stating his version would have received great reviews...

I didn't like Fantastic Four, but it has some great moments, particularly in the first half. If I was a betting man, I'd put those fleeting glimpses of a good movie down to Chronicle director Josh Trank. However, as many of you have already guessed, it appears as if his vision for the iconic Marvel heroes was ruined by Fox and the reshoots which have left it a disjointed and disappointing mess.

Taking to his Twitter account tonight, Trank has seemingly confirmed that there were indeed some serious issues behind the scenes. We don't know why Fox didn't move forward with his version (we do at least know that the negative fan reaction to "Victor Domanshev" led to him being renamed to Victor Von Doom), but the filmmaker clearly believes his take from a year ago would have fared better. Of course, we're never going to see it. Instead, we're left with a Fantastic Four which is currently one of the worst reviewed comic book movies of all-time with 9% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Hopefully Trank will reveal more details about his original vision and what went wrong now that the movie is out and he has no reason to keep up appearances. What do you think about these comments? UPDATE: The Tweet has now been deleted, but a screengrab can be seen below.

I really just think Chronicle is overrated and the movie still wouldn't have been great at all...

I figured as much, but then again a lot of the stuff that people are hating (the tone, and the cast lacking chemistry) came right from Trank. I guess we'll have to see the film ourselves to truly analyze what came from Trank, and what came from studio meddling. Of course he could also be totally full of shit, and those rumors about him being an intoxicated moron could totally be true. As he said, we'll never know.

By one @JoshWilding! By [frick]ing one!

Anyway, I believe him. Studio interference by Fox isn't a surprise and it's sad they didn't let him do his vision.

X-Men 1, 2, FC, DOFP and Wolverine lead me to believe that this was his fault.

Fox saw that he was trying to totally frick up the F4 with his own teen angst version, with a mass amount of liberties. Fox did their best to try and cover it up with re shoots and having someone else help direct it, but it made it even worse.

Give this one up Fox. X-Men has a universe big enough to stand on it's own, and should stay with you guys. F4 however, needs to be part of the MCU.

I don't know what went wrong with this movie, but if there ever was an actual artistic vision behind this at some point and they sacrificed it for whatever reason... well, [frick] it. A potential "Domashev Cut" that's a decent movie -if even less of a Fantastic Four movie- would have been preferable, because...

But in reality we'll never know and this could've well been mostly on Trank.

He basically confirmed even he doesn't like the movie, this should shut up Robert Liefeld who is actually insulting all the people that didn't like it. Some people are so desperate for this to be good that they actually become assholes in the process.

Trank should have made a decent Fantastic Four from the very start. He didn't love or even like the characters to begin with. Red lights were there as soon as he told everyone not to read any F4 comic books. From day one said this would be Craptastic, glad I was right : D

Geez, you think they could make Dr Doom decent a second time round lol.

Only way I'm gonna ever see this movie is for free, not a cent from me, and I'll stand by that.

Rotten Tomato scores:
X-Men-81%
X-Men 2-86%
X-Men 3-58%
Wolverine Origins-38%
First Class-87%
The Wolverine-70%
X-Men DOFP-91%

They have a pretty good track record. Especially with Singer. Let him dictate this universe completely. Let him have input in Deadpool even and X-Force.

But don't let anyone besides the MCU touch F4.

anyway ... i'm really surprised that this movie is not exactly medicore but seems to be some kind of a cluster[frick]. It's basically TAS2, Wolverine:Origins. Maybe more Wolverine:Origins.

Yeah, I know it, Mr. Trank. Your "fantastic" version included the "fantastic" hacker Doom, which would make things even worse. No excuses, sir, sorry.

Wasn't there a definite FOX studio interference precedent with the first Wolverine movie?
jerryblake
jerryblake - 8/6/2015, 7:22 PM
so ... did Fox really knew that they got turd in their hands and decided to talk with Marvel about giving them FF rights back and have X-Men tv show instead ?

Actually, did FOX make Trank delete his Twitter because he kept tweeting stupid shit?

@KurtCrawler

Agreed. I'm sure Trank was behind the idea of the hacker Doom and other stuff. Also, his always "meh" behaviour at interviews and events showed that it was himself who was not giving a damn to anything.

@Antley

Thank you.

I love X-Men for the most part and X2 is possibly my favorite CBM of all time. I trust Singer and pretty much no one else with this franchise. Fox should looks to him for casting/director picks for their following movies.

He's trying to save face, but he could also be 100% right since there was a time when Campbell said his original take on Green Lantern was going to be awesome and Gavin Hood had said the same thing about X-Men Origins: Wolverine too. Wouldn't surprise me that a studio has yet again massively forced their hand in every situation.

If I would have totally f*cked up a movie, I would have said the exact same thing Josh.
