BOX OFFICE: OZ: THE GREAT & POWERFUL Grosses $2 Million In Midnight Showings

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney's 3D fantasy epic Oz: The Great & Powerful has grossed $2 million in its opening on Thursday night. This is an impressive gross, and the Sam Raimi-directed prequel is expected to gross somewhere in between $80M and $100M according to pre-release tracking. However, Disney is predicting a smaller $75M due to the bleak performances of other films domestically. Oz will likely gain the third highest March opening of all time, behind last year's The Hunger Games ($152.5M) and 2010's Alice In Wonderland ($116.1M). The latter, another Disney fantasy adventure, grossed $3.9M in its midnight runs. Do you plan on seeing Oz: The Great & Powerful this weekend?

I think GI Joe will kill it this month at the box office. Unless people already moved on and forgot about it. What was the reason for the delay with that anyway?

Saw it last night and liked it a lot! It's not a "great" movie, but it's very good and quite an enjoyable time at the movies!

If you have a soft spot for things OZ, I would recommend.

Naw this movie will do well. You got to keep in mind that school is still not out so the midnight showings will not be that great. But I am sure parents will pack the movies this weekend with their bratty snot nose kids!

also random question but with Disney already writing a sequel what story would they most likely use? Anyone read any of the books? just curious.

They can use the material from any of the books that are out there! They cannot reference the other movie because WB still owns the rights to those.

There are 14 books they can pull from if they choose.

Some of the books are good reads some are short, but there is enough info there to make several movies. Also in the other books there are many characters as well. The second movie Return to OZ did feature a few of those characters from the books.

I agree with you, good movie + good marketing = good box office

bad movie + good marketing = good box office in the first week then it goes down to hell after that

bad movie + bad marketing = shit movie + shit box office
