BOX OFFICE: THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES Is Already Busting Blocks

The final movie in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy won't open in North America until December 17th, but it's already made some serious coin from overseas markets where it debuted this past Wednesday. Details past the jump.

Though hardly surprising considering the previous two films amassed over a billion dollars, the final instalment in Peter Jackson's Middle Earth saga, The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies, opened at No. 1 in all 11 overseas territories, where it debuted Wednesday with $11.3 million. The action-packed fantasy flick posted the biggest opening day of the year in eight Countries (Germany, Belgium, Holland, all four Scandinavian territories and Switzerland), and opens today in the UK and Ireland where it's sure to add to its impressive haul ahead of its December 17th release in the US. Are you planning on seeing "the defining chapter" of this great series in theaters? You can have a read of my 4-star review HERE if you need help making your mind up.

SF Metreon is only showing it in IMAX3D with that horrible frame rate that takes you completely out of the film. Its the biggest and best IMAX in the bay. I can't watch that Hyper frame shit!

I'm a Bart ride away from SF. Hate driving there and the theater is right by the station. I'll be forced to see it in regular 3D in Union City. Its bitter sweet. It comes out on my [frick]ed up off day instead of friday but I cant see it in IMAX. Not it hyphy frame.

No good theaters in Stockton?

I found the HFR to be very immersive. It added another dimension. Or maybe it just made the 3D that much better. It just seemed so much realer in HFR

Probably won't see this in HFR, wasn't a fan of the look. Nevertheless, very excited!

HFR had an unwanted side effect for me. Most other movies now look out of focus.

This movie will out gross all movie release this year... Marvel's flick cannot come close to this beast.
Chewtoy

@kalelhawj: internationally, it should have no trouble topping GotG... But then Transformers 4 is the top grossing film this year worldwide (and people make fun of American taste...). Domestically, however, it will be a challenge for the Hobbit to take the crown from Marvel's space adventure. The last entry was around $100m behind GotG's domestic total. That's a lot of ground to make up.

And America also gave us you........what would we do without you.

Hmmmmmm well I guess there would be no more Herpes medication commercials on television so that would be a plus.

@sKeemAn @0megaDaGod

Ah, Oakland. Where I grew up and the city I work in.

Apparently they've ramped up the HFR showing everywhere so I may as well hit the metreon anyway if I haven't wasted too much time to get a good seat. metreons IMAX is so epic that the furthest row back is PERFECT. Even if a little off center. I couldn't imagine sitting in the middle or closer.

Emeryville has "IMAX" but not really- nowhere the scale of metreon.

I'm anticipating the IMAX3D to accent the HFR's overly crisp picture. In 2D, HFR is like watching news coverage, a sitcom, or the PBS network.

Fingers crossed for a good seat.
