They should just give that stuff away to everyone who wants it. Why degrade them into entering a contest. Isn't it bad enought hat they want it?

I may be biased as I liked Jason Momoa in Stargate Atlantis as well as Game Of Thrones, but I really enjoyed the movie. While I'll admit it's not an Oscar type of movie, no Barbarian movie ever is nor will be, it's still fun. I saw the movie and totally got what I was expecting...a movie about a bad ass dude who kicks all form of ass. I thought Momoa totally owned the role and is going to have a great career as an action star in years to come. I'm hoping to see him as the Kurgan in the upcoming Highlander Remake...he makes an amazing warrior.

I watched it today and I won't go as far to say I loved the movie, but I liked it. It was lacking in direction and some of the writing. They had Momoa grinning or smirking too much for my taste and though he does come across as intelligent, I would have liked to see them play that up more. The plot was fairly linear and predictable, but most movies of this genre are.

I will say after watching this film, it definitely portrays Conan and Hyboria the way Howard inked it much better than Arnold's Conan and since that is the logical film to compare it to... there really is no comparison. The settings, architecture and characters were like the illustrations in his books. The film depicted the vicious barbarian that doesn't hesitate to kill and maim unless hesitating serves a greater purpose, which was brought across a few times. Quite a few boobies being shown, so that makes it much more accurate as well. It was great to see an agile, panther-like Conan who wasn't some lumbering oaf who takes 5-10 seconds to swing his sword around. Momoa is so much more adept with fighting hand to hand and with sword skills, which is true to Conan. I didn't care for Momoa's voice though. They could have made him sound rougher. I prefer it over the dumb-sounding accent that Arnold had/has, but not by much.

My date didn't care for all the violence, though I warned her, but gotta like a woman who will treat you to a movie like Conan. I owe her a chick flick now. She thought the movie was okay, but not her cup of tea. The only thing she knows about Conan is from the Arnold film and she didn't care for that one either. She said this one is definitely much more barbaric and it makes the old one look wimpy in that aspect.

So, I am not going to sing the praises of the new film, but I enjoyed it and with a little better script and direction, the same cast and violence and boobies...I think a sequel would be good, if it gets that far.

Ranger14 You know, through it all, I was actually looking forward to hear what you had to say about the film, being so passionate about the material and all. I would have liked to see a full review from you, but your comments here pretty much sums up your report.

I think your animosity for Arnold and the classic Conan film limits you from giving a fully genuine account. You say Momoa sounded terrible but you make sure to mention that Arnold sounds worse even though were not talking about THAT film. You say the plot was predictable and that most films of this kind are; as if that justifies bad film making.

I give you props for making an attempt, begrudgingly as it is, to admit that the film was bad in your own way. But I think a good, genuine and insightful account from a fan was lost a little on Arnold hating. Still an interesting read.

Your date said it was more barbaric than the wimpy old one? lol Riiiight.

Cool finally hearing you talk about seeing it.

Neo@ Why wouldn't one compare it to Arnold's film? Most of those hating on the film prior and after keep bringing up Arnold and being it is a remake of the Arnold classic comparisons are going to be made. I actually enjoyed Arnold's film back in the day for being entertaining, but it was a crappy Conan adaptation. I wanted a good Conan adaptation. This was a much better adaptation. That's as genuine as one can get and anyone who has read Howard's books knows what I mean by that. Yes, the film has its shortcomings, but I still liked it.

90+% of films out there are predictable. I don't think that necessarily makes it a poor film. These type of films you know the hero is going to prevail over the bad guy. It still doesn't mean the film can't be good and enjoyable. This was not a bad film. It wasn't a great film. Somewhere in between.
Ranger14
Ranger14 - 8/23/2011, 8:28 PM
...and that is what she said. This film is so much more graphic and violent and Momoa does a great job of carrying out that violence. She had a hard time watching some of the scenes, so yes, she thought the old one was wimpy in comparison. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure notice the difference between the barbaric and violent nature of the two films.
