From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” the third in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien.

“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves. Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world. Enraged, Smaug rains his fiery wrath down upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town.

Obsessed above all else with his reclaimed treasure, Thorin sacrifices friendship and honor to hoard it as Bilbo’s frantic attempts to make him see reason drive the Hobbit towards a desperate and dangerous choice. But there are even greater dangers ahead. Unseen by any but the Wizard Gandalf, the great enemy Sauron has sent forth legions of Orcs in a stealth attack upon the Lonely Mountain.

As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide – unite or be destroyed. Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends in the epic Battle of the Five Armies, as the future of Middle-earth hangs in the balance.

Why even call this a Hobbit movie anymore? So much change has been done to the narrative that its become a LOTR prequel. Even the trailers don't try to hide this fact by advertising Legolas and Saruman as main players in the tale.

Nice. Now add on a SW7 and a BvS trailer in front of this and you got yourself a Masterpiece.

Typical Peter JAckson revisionist bullshit.

Thankfully, now his raping of Professor Tolkien's works is over.

Unless he decides to do The Silmarillion in thirteen parts, including flying elves in jets, battle robots and Luthien Tinuviel in a tank blowing Morgoth's head off.

@FerFogs

Was the Hobbit not more fantastical and a bit more over the top than LOTR? That's how I saw it anyway.

@RamonSuarez - Yeah well unfortunately the Hobbit was written as a stand alone book originally but then later changed by Tolkien himself to serve as a prequel to Lord of the Rings. The publishers wouldn't allow him to change the "childrens book" nature of The Book so he began seeding other events that he wanted in the book as appendixes that can be read in Return of the King, Lost Tales and The Silmarillian.

The mistake most including reviewers make about the Hobbit movies are that they are not just adapting the book, they're adapting the timeline because it is a prequel to LOTR. They've still made way too many superfluous changes but it was never intended to just be an adaptation of one book.

Trailer quality looks like shite, I'll wait a few hours for a proper release thanks.

@Ceejay

Yes, aspects of the Hobbit were retroactively changed to connect with LOTR for continuity reasons. But no, it was not rewritten to be a prequel. The Hobbit remained a tale about Bilbo Baggins' quest to win a share of Smaug's treasure. The book's plot remained the same save for a few character changes - like Gollum's attitude when Bilbo cheats him of the ring - that were incidental to the actual story.

However, this movie franchise has been rewritten in such a way that is increasingly making it a LOTR prequel with each film. Actual character arcs being inserted into the narrative that have more to do with establishing connections to the Fellowship's future quest to destroy Suaron's ring than Bilbo's present journey to defeat Smaug. You can see the increasing changes with each film as Jackson tries to add more characters and subplots to the basic story in order to connect the end of this "trilogy" with The Fellowship of the Ring.

The sad part is that a tale which should be about Bilbo is increasingly becoming less and less about his adventure to cash in on the public's expectation that the events of LOTR are around the corner. There's no reason for Legolas or Saruman to be in this story as it has nothing to do with them at all.

Such a bunch of bloody whiners. Yeah yeah liberties were taken..and when aren't they? Jackson stretched out the narrative to give us 3 awesome Hobbit movies instead if just one..the [frick]ing nerve! I admit these aren't as good as the LOTR films but they were never going to be because the story simply isn't as good. I've really enjoyed the first two and think this looks great too.

I have to agree with RorMachine. I mean doesn't every adaptation whether being based on a book or a comic book make changes. Why can we excuse certain films and not forgive The Hobbit for making these changes?
RamonSuarez
RamonSuarez - 11/6/2014, 5:45 AM
LOL @ "liberties". That's one euphemistic way of putting it.

The problem was in thinking the Hobbit should ever have been handled as a trilogy to begin with. It wasn't an extensive or complicated enough of a book to stretch out the way that Jackson did. And the only reason the studio did make a trilogy out of it was for the cynical purpose of making more money.

One movie with shorter, tighter story would have been the way to go. But instead we get the convoluted mess we see before us today with newly introduced characters, long drawn out scenes and sequences which add nothing of importance to the basic plot, and a lot of excuses to give us elaborate CGI effects for no practical reason.

Smh @ all of these gripes about the Hobbit while LOTR gets a pass. LOTR heavily revised plot lines and characters in the movie. They downplayed some characters while completely omitting others. In LOTR, many things often went unanswered to the many viewers that did not bother reading the book first. I don't know what people were expecting with the Hobbit. The technology that went into making the Hobbit did not exist when making LOTR, if it had then rest assured PJ would have used even more CGI in LOTR.

RamonSuarez - 11/6/2014, 5:52 AM
Mind you, these were the same people who couldn't find a space in FOTR to give us even a glimmer of Tom Bombadil but had the balls to [frick] with the Hobbit so badly that they invented Tauriel to insert a female love interest so they could exploit another formulaic forbidden romance story.

"Jackson stretched out the narrative to give us 3 awesome Hobbit movies instead if just one.."

Well, I'm glad you see it that way. From my perspective so far I can say that Jackson gave us one okay-ish Hobbit movie and one bad Hobbit movie. I can't say much about the third, other than that I've seen stuff in the first trailer that already ruined the mood for me (ram-chariot with crossbow chase sequence).

"The technology that went into making the Hobbit did not exist when making LOTR, if it had then rest assured PJ would have used even more CGI in LOTR."

Then I'll just remain thankful that the LotR movies were made when they were made, and not today.

Who said people didn't have gripes with LOTR? Of the three movies Jackson made of the bunch the only one that didn't make me puke was The Two Towers. Return of the King might have been the most overrated blockbuster film of the aughties. It bypassed the third book's bittersweet tale of passing and loss in the aftermath of the ring's destruction in order to give us more action-special effects scenes. The scouring of The Shire was almost completely bypassed and the postscript of Fellowship was all but ignored.
RamonSuarez
RamonSuarez - 11/6/2014, 6:04 AM
Peter Jackson might the most overrated big budget director of all time. He takes everything interesting and thoughtful in a property and substitutes a lot of flashy special effects in its stead. A shame really that such a mediocre filmmaker gets a free pass because he's made so much money.

@ RamonSuarez. I'm sure people have gripes with LOTR, but the way they explain their gripes with the Hobbit comes off as oblivious to the very similar direction PJ took with the highly successful LOTR. But truth be told, PJ could have made 5-6 movies with the LOTR, each 2.5 hours long that went into depth in illustrating all of the aspects of the book.
