Lucifer Vs. Archangels In Storyboards For Alex Proyas' PARADISE LOST (Cancelled)

Lucifer Vs. Archangels In Storyboards For Alex Proyas' PARADISE LOST (Cancelled)

I came across some storyboards that depict an epic aerial battle between Lucifer (Bradley Cooper) and Archangels, Michael (Benjamin Walker) and Gabriel (Casey Affleck). They were created by Michael Anthony Jackson for Alex Proyas defunct Paradise Lost.

In February of 2012, Legendary Pictures pulled the plug on Paradise Lost. It was to be a loose adaptation of John Milton's 17th century poem. Director Alex Proyas ("The Crow") had planned to use the most advanced 3D and motion capture technology to bring the biblical saga to life, but in the end budget concerns were too much to overcome. Legendary, tried numerous times to rework the numbers to get it below $120 million, but it was too daunting a task. At the heart of the issue, was the enormous amount of visual effects that were required for the celestial battles, that involved massive aerial warfare. It would've featured an all-star cast: Bradley Cooper as Lucifer, Benjamin Walker as the archangel Michael, Casey Affleck as Gabriel, Diego Boneta as Adam, Camilla Belle as Eve and Dijmon Hounsou as Abdiel, the Angel of Death.
Storyboards by Michael Anthony Jackson

Official Synopsis: Lucifer and Michael, God's greatest archangels, share the bond of extraordinary friendship until God produces his greatest creation: Man. Unable to remain subservient to God if it means bowing down to humanity, Lucifer begins his dark descent and is cast out — only to plot his revenge.

Hail Lucifer.
I'm glad Proyas didn't rape one the greatest books of English literature. And Cooper, he isn't Lucifer material.

This has to get made!!!! They couldn't do like a Kick Starer campaign for this movie? That's what they did for the Veronica Mars movie to get made. I know these would be more expensive but damn the movie would be epic.

Cool! Those seems to be more like promotional boards, than an actual production storyboard. Well, i like it!

@Intruder, maybe the design production were not set, so the drawings are more for pointing action, not showing the final product. But you're right - it's difficult to imagine this kind of stuff reaching less than $200 mi.

The movie could have been interesting but I was not sold on Bradley Cooper as the bad guy. I think there would be better choices then him.

Would have loved to have seen this on the big screen. I really dig the story but the only thing that makes me cringe about any of it is that it would only reinforce the misguided idea that Lucifer equates to Satan or the Devil.

Either way, storyboards and all info I have seen on this movie look great. It's a shame it was halted.

"Looks like a CGI shitstorm"

You mean to tell me that a film that would have used advanced 3D and motion capture technology would have been nothing but CGI?

Doesn't look biblical, just looks like a generic action movie.

How is it you think lucifer is not satan?

I don't think it's actually implied that Lucifer and Satan are one in the same. Lucifer didn't understand why God didn't simply force man to love Him. The comparison does hold many parallels as Lucifer was basically condoning slavery and man has concupiscence, is drawn to temptation and sin, because of Oroginal Sin. One would then theorize that the serpent in the garden was both Satan and Lucifer, because they share a desire to enslave man.

@Rheynger

If you read the Isaiah 14 passage that mentions Lucifer in its context, it is talking about Nebuchadnezzar. Nowl, it's possible that Lucifer could have been Satan's old name since Lucifer in Hebrew is Heyl'El and all of God's angels end with 'El'.

Wow.

This... looks...

AWFUL.

Seriously, this looks like the worst kind of overcooked, substance-less garbage Hollywood is known for churning out. I get that the material of Paradise Lost is inherently pretty mythic and melodramatic, but... Michael growing armor when he receives his special wonder sword? Six-winged angels covered in a ridiculous amount of surface detail?

This looks like a goddamn video game!

This doesn't look like it has any kind of human dimension to connect to... and it's WAY too dramatic (the earlier storyboards emphasized this pretty clearly, when Eve bites into the apple and it creates a literal shock wave). Legendary was smart to pull the plug on this... it looks like it was set to be another $200 million niche film like Pacific Rim. The only people this would have appealed to were...

... Well, honestly, I have no IDEA who this would have appealed to.

Paradise Lost and the Divine Comedy are, perhaps, the two greatest pieces of literature ever written, using Christian (or Judeo-Christian) mythology as their inspiration. This could have been interesting if done right but I guess it will have to just be left for speculation.
