Narnia: The Magician's Nephew Trailer Is A Visually Dazzling Punk Rock Delight

Netflix has released the first trailer for Narnia: The Magician's Nephew (via SFFGazette.com), and this vibrant sneak peek promises a Narnia movie unlike any we've seen before.

With Barbie director Greta Gerwig at the helm, we expected something different, and this take on C. S. Lewis' iconic books feels more like Flash Gordon than Harry Potter. It's clearly a very different take on the source material, and while it may not be to the liking of some longtime fans, this visually resplendent preview is undeniably attention-grabbing.

The biggest talking point will be Aslan's introduction; it's a jaw-dropping moment, and one that explains why The Magician's Nephew is heading to theaters to offer people that big-screen experience before it eventually debuts on Netflix.

The trailer has received something of a mixed response on social media, and not everyone is impressed by the CGI. However, it's clear that the idea with this movie is to appeal to a younger crowd and, if Netflix is lucky, recapture that Barbie success.

Gerwig said today, "I was a child when I first read The Magician’s Nephew, and I fell in love with the gorgeously improbable but completely brilliant concept of a cosmic lion singing the world of Narnia to life. I didn’t know that I would grow up to make films, but a universe built out of music is an idea that always lived in my heart. It is the honor of a lifetime to be asked to imagine it into being."

"Because of C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia, I believed in magic and hidden worlds and adventure. I believed that anywhere could be enchanted and that anyone could be swept up into an epic," the filmmaker continued. "That wonder and awe was available to everyone, even ordinary people like me. It transformed me."

Academy Award–nominated filmmaker Greta Gerwig brings C. S. Lewis’s beloved story The Magician’s Nephew to the screen for the first time in a sweeping adventure that invites dreamers of all ages to experience the creation of Narnia.

The movie stars David McKenna, Beatrice Campbell, Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Ciarán Hinds, Daniel Craig, Meryl Streep, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Denise Gough, and Susan Wokoma.

Mark Gordon, Amy Pascal, Vincent Sieber-Smith, and Greta Gerwig produce Narnia: The Magician's Nephew, with Patricia Whitcher, Racheline Benveniste, Christine Crais and Douglas Gresham, and Melvin Adams for the C. S. Lewis Estate serving as executive producers.

Narnia: The Magician's Nephew opens in theaters on February 12, 2027. You can check out the first trailer and poster for the movie below.

@Malatrollva - The individual voicing Aslan has a larger penis. Otherwise, no notes.

That introduction of Aslan in the void is epic, no question. The punk rock & roll vibes though? Yeahhh no, that doesn't work. This is going to be a mixed bag of lots of good stuff, plenty of cringey and disappointing stuff, with a small side of blasphemy.

Also there is no reason this couldn't take place in the early 1900's like the books. Completely ruins the timeline for the rest of them.

@YouIknowiamsexy - every single film she’s directed has recouped a massive surplus at the box office. Her last movie made 1.3 billion. I think she knows what she’s doing.

They made He Mans dad a hardass when he was a loving parent in the cartoon then Aslan a male lion voiced by Streep. Hollywood hates anything male or non gay lol

Looks like hot garbage. I usually wait to watch the film but I’m confident this won’t honor the source material.

Honestly, it’s hard to form any real judgement from the trailer. I rather liked the visuals of earth. The other world(s) are a little jarring, but look well done. Maybe it will be cool. Maybe it will end ip being stupid fan fiction rather than a true adaptation. Who knows?

It looks cool but doesn’t look at all like Narnia to me. I guess we’ll see.

@SheepishOne - it's not supposed to look like Narnia yet. This book is literally the creation of Narnia.

I’m not a big LED Zeppelin fan but that song is ageless. It always sounds new to me.
