One of the only faults I have with Peter Jackson's LotR movies was Gollum. I blame Jackson too, not Serkis, but Jackson's Gollum was often laughed at by the audience, and was presented as sympathetic comic relief.

Tolkien's Gollum was a crazy psycho who would eat Hobbits, lied about everything, and was NOT funny or comic relief. Dunno why Jackson messed with Gollum.

@CarnageUSA I think Gollum's depiction was spot on for LOTR. In the LOTR books, he was severely whiney and often troublesome since he was more or less a captive of the hobbits (through the ring).

In The Hobbit, however, Gollum is indeed a character who eats hobbits and threatens to if Bilbo does not answer his riddles correctly. The Hobbit was Tolkien's first incarnation of Gollum and he evolved throughout LOTR. Hopefully we will be able to see Gollum both act and look different-given the timeline-in these upcoming films.
