“The wheel weaves as the wheel wills.”

The Wheel of Time has returned to Prime Video for its second season, and the review embargo only just lifted yesterday evening.

This is not always a great sign, but so far, reviews have been (mostly) very positive, and the fantasy show's sophomore run is currently sitting at a very respectable 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. It's worth noting that only 15 reviews have been counted so far, so this score is sure to fluctuate.

The first season of the Wheel of Time proved to be fairly divisive among fans of Robert Jordan's sprawling saga, but critics were won over (for the most part), and it earned a similarly impressive 81% on the review aggregator.

This season adapts what is generally considered one of the most popular novels in the series, The Great Hunt (though it's also expected to include elements of the third book, The Dragon Reborn).

In the season 1 finale, our heroes believed they were successful in vanquishing the Dark One (Josha Stradowski, but, as Moiraine Damodred (Rosamund Pike) points out in the teaser, all they did was "set him free."

Now, Rand Al’Thor (Josha Stradowski) must attempt to come to terms with the fact that he is a lot more than just a "spoke on the wheel," and harness the immense power flowing through him if he hopes to save his friends - and the entire world - from a terrible fate.

Have you watched any of The Wheel of Time season 2 yet? Let us know in the usual place.

Based on the best-selling Robert Jordan fantasy series, a humble farm boy, Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski, Gran Turismo), learns he is The Dragon Reborn—a dangerous figure from history destined to save the world … or break it. Desperate to protect him from the Dark One, an army of powerful sorceresses must reckon with his burgeoning power and encroaching madness. The Wheel of Time turns, and the Last Battle approaches. Though Rand thought he destroyed the Dark One, evil is not gone from the world. In Season Two, threats new and very old seek out the young friends from the Two Rivers, now scattered over the world. The woman who found and guided them is now powerless to help, and so they must find other sources of strength. In each other, or themselves. In the Light ... or the Dark.

Watched two of the three episodes last night. My wife and I have both read the book series, she actually just finished it a few months ago.

I find that I can enjoy the show more if I just forget the books exist. It’s amazing how much stuff they change.

I’m really dealing more or less about it how I did with season one. It’s ok. And I guess ok is fine. It’s just a little disappointing that this book series could have been epic on the scale of Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings and this is what we are getting.

@mountainman - Agreed. My girlfriend just rewatched the season 1 finale (she loved the season) to get ready for season 2. i told her she needs to read the books, she will get so hooked on them

@Pathogen - Most book readers I know find more faults with the show than people who haven’t read them.

It’s actually a well made show, it’s just very odd why some changes were decided on. I understand they need to move things faster since there is no way they would make 14 seasons to cover all books.

I was bothered a lot my season 1. I’ve come to terms with it since. I like the actors, the set design, they are getting the overall lore, the costumes and special effects are mostly good (besides season 1 finale). So I came into season 2 telling myself that I won’t judge vs the books and I enjoyed it more.

I’m just sad that it looks like we won’t be getting the flicker, flicker scene, as that is one of the best sequences in the entire book series.

@mountainman - i will be watching it this weekend. and i agree...i'm on chapter 11 of the last book...finally...and i had to forget about the books to even begin to enjoy the show...looking forward to seeing it...and yeah...flicker, flicker, flicker...oh well...i also really enjoy the landscape and set design...am interested to see how they heal moiraine, or if they do (which if they didn't, that would be really weird)...i would imagine they are going to have nynaeve heal her, since she heals stilling in the books.

@soupysales - Yeah I figure that plot point will be resolved in that way. It just feels unnecessary as many of the changes.

But yes if I just turn off my knowledge of the books and just watch the show for what it is, it’s mostly good. And season 2 so far seems like a step up from 1.

Enjoy the Last Battle! It’s probably the most epic thing I’ve ever read.
