UPDATE: 'Bard' & 'Legolas' Feature In First Official Still From THE HOBBIT: THERE AND BACK AGAIN

Entertainment Weekly seem to have bypassed the second movie in Peter Jackson's new Middle Earth trilogy, and have for us this very first glimpse at the third, featuring Orlando Bloom as Legolas and Luke Evans as Bard The Bowman. Check it out after the jump..

We're not exactly sure why an official still from the third film has made its way online before something from the second, but we'll take it! This snap definitely confirms a much bigger role for Bard in this series of movies, and it's also very interesting that he shares scenes with Legolas - who obviously journeys on from Mirkwood and will not be making a mere cameo as was expected. Thanks to Jonas for the heads up.

The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits theaters December 14th.

UPDATE: Here's a glimpse at Gandalf confronting The Goblin King.

Must be fun for Bloom, McKellen, Woods, Weaving and Blanchet to be back in these roles after all this time.

Hmmm.... So I guess this takes place at the Battle of Five Armies. Which I guess gives us an idea of what's gonna happen in each movie. If the death of Smaug is the climax of the second movie, the the Battle of Five Armies would likely be the climax of the third. That's gonna be a heck of a lot of filler to make a whole movie between those two events.

The whole White Council/Battle of Dol Goldur plot could take up the bulk of the third movie, but it seems a bit strange to have most of an entire movie take place away from the main characters

So how does this one picture CONFIRM larger roles for both?

Because in the book, Bard is literally in one chapter..he doesn't interact with any of the other characters, and in fact has hardly any dialog at all. And Legolas was expected just to show up at Mirkwood in a cameo, here he is clearly closer to the Lonely Mountain, and thus has more to do in the story.

It seems they'll both take part in the Battle of the Five Armies (The Mirkwood Elves fight alongside the Men and the Dwarves, so it makes sense that Legolas would be involved, and his father is the Mirkwood Elves' King.)

Legolas was probably present at Mirkwood and in the Battle in the book, but wasn't important enough to be named as he played very little role in the plot concerning Bilbo's story. The advantage of the movie over the book would be that we can see each character, even background characters, before us. So in the book, the nameless elves are pretty much faceless too, but each of them in the movie has a face, one of which we recognize to be Legolas from the Lord Of The Rings.

Is it just me or does the actor who plays Bard look like a cross between Bloom and Antonio Banderas?

Good that they are expanding Bard as he does just appear and then starts to order everyone around lol

Ror - I agree on those points, but I think "confirming" a larger part of the story is stretching a bit. No?

It's good they expand on Bards character cause they have to explain why he goes on to SPOILER ALERT become king of Laketown. I don't had a problem at all with Legolas being more involved because be clearly would have being the prince of the neighboring kingdom. I just still wonder how they're gonna fill in all the extra time with 3 movies now.

Don't know why they're calling it "There and Back Again". That title might suit the book, in which they go there and then back again, but in the film they just set off for there, don't get there and don't yet get back from there again.
They should call it "Not there yet and certainly not back again, yet".

SPOILER ALERT
Laketown (aka Esgaroth) gets destroyed by Smaug. The residents then go and re-settle Dale and Bard becomes their king.
